DD has molluscum contagiosum. Any advice?

DD (13) has a cluster of spots behind her knee on one leg. Been there for months and months. Took her to the GP who confirmed MC and said they'll just go when they're ready.

They're now slowly spreading up her thigh (although not much, a few extra spots maybe).

She's really self conscious about them and won't wear shorts/go swimming/skirts without tights etc. Really difficult with Summer coming.

They do look a bit ghastly although I'd obviously never say that to her Sad There are roughly 20 spots or so.

Any success stories with them? They're showing no signs of going, quite the opposite infact.

Molludab. Managed to get it on prescription.
Be warned. Before one pops it goes bright red and looks horrendous but they all
Went very quickly!

Thecrown3 · 28/05/2019 07:08

My ds 11 had these for 18 months and they just got worse and worse, all over chest, legs and arms. I tried lots of tea tree oil , silver spray etc the only thing that did succeed was molludab .
Also make sure their using a clean bath towel and pjs every day.
Try a different Gp in your practice which is what I did , as my original one just kept saying leave it.Different GP prescribed molludab straight away.

Thuja is the only thing that worked for ds.

Only thing that worked for us was covering them in plasters. They went very quickly after that.

obviouslymarvellous · 28/05/2019 07:27

Australian tea tree oil antiseptic (green tube) was the only thing that got rid of them on my daughter. A lovely lady recommended it to me in the body shop and it was a transformation - she had been plagued behind her knees for ages and they went so quickly. I put a light layer on in the morning and at night and that was it x

OhTheRoses · 28/05/2019 07:32

Dd had these uesrs ago. They all flared individually over 2/3 weeks agter chicken pox. Then disappeared forever.

RoseMartha · 28/05/2019 07:54

Yes dd had them for a year aged 11. Had about 100. We thought they would never go. Used molludab and antibiotic cream. The latter on infected ones.

federationrep · 28/05/2019 08:00

Second covering with plasters. You'll start to recognise when they're ready to burst so get them covered so the liquid inside isn't spreading.

MrTumblesSpottyHag · 28/05/2019 08:05

We covered them with plasters which seemed to kill them off a bit, then both DDs accidentally scratched then right off within a week of each other and they never came back.
DD1 only had one huge one which she caught on clothing and ripped off and DD2 had a cluster quite close together and I think she scratched them in the night.
A bit drastic maybe but it worked!

VenusClapTrap · 28/05/2019 08:16

It took three years for dd’s to go. Horrible things. Nothing worked, and they sparked off an outbreak of impetigo too. We were so happy when they finally starting going. Three years though!

Cannyjump · 28/05/2019 09:05

Thank you again everyone. Decided to go with the majority and give Molludab a go.

It's near impossible to get a GP appointment with us (that's a whole other thread!!) so will just buy some online and follow the instructions closely.

Sorry to read so many of you have suffered with them. Horrible things Sad

DD had them when she was 4. I dabbed neat tea tree oil (from poundland!) on each one every night and morning and they cleared up within a couple of weeks.

RunningKatie · 28/05/2019 09:13

Molludab didn't work for us but tea tree did. Took 3 or 4 bottles worth but so worth it when it finally went.

Blueuxbridge · 28/05/2019 09:14

Before you try molludab I would give the covering with plasters a go. I read a study when my DS had these on the back of his legs and was sceptical but it really worked. He had over 20 on one leg that had been there for over a year but after covering with tiny pieces of plaster for a week the larger ones came to a head and the smaller ones just disappeared. I was amazed.

I hope this works for your DD. They are unsightly things and I can see how she would feel self conscious.

BertrandRussell · 28/05/2019 09:17

The problem is that they go away by themselves in time, so people always think they last thing they use is the cure. They always look at their absolute worst when they are about to go, so try not to worry or let her worry-they go horrible and inflamed then go, usually without leaving a mark.

BusterGonad · 28/05/2019 09:20

@obviouslymarvellous did you buy the tea tree oil from The Body Shop? Any chance of a photo of it?

BusterGonad · 28/05/2019 09:32

BertrandRussell do they go red and inflamed before they go? My son has had quite a few disappear and some are red and itchy but some are still white/fleshy. Do you think they are going?

SarahTancredi · 28/05/2019 09:39

Dd2 has loads. On the back of the knee and on her back.

They look awful. Dr said to just leave them except then it got worse Sad

It's been months.

obviouslymarvellous · 28/05/2019 09:43

I meant Holland and Barrett sorry fuzzy brain!!!! It's in a green tube and called Australia tee tree antiseptic- when I'm home I will get a pic for you :)

thaegumathteth · 28/05/2019 09:46

Ds has these in his last year of primary. He had them for about a year - we tried molludab. I’m not sure if it worked but around the same time one became really infected - that seemed to trigger his body into realising they were there and they all disappeared almost overnight

BusterGonad · 28/05/2019 10:27

obviouslymarvellous ah, don't worry then as I'm abroad and we don't have Holland and Barrett but we do have The Body Shop! 😂

Hadenoughofitall441 · 28/05/2019 10:34

@bustergonad
I swear to god, I used to have it for the eczema behind my ears aswell so was surprised when dr gave it to me for that, it worked so I’m not complaining 😊

Damntheman · 28/05/2019 10:35

Ugh poor DD, my DS had these for almost two years! (between 3 and 5). We ended up getting some steroid cream from the doctor and using that twice daily plus moisturing it hard. He spent the summer in the sunshine that he turned five and they finally went away. It was awful! They look horrific :(

sazzlewashingqueen · 28/05/2019 11:26

Our DD had it from birth. At age 3.5 it didn't seem likely that them clearing up on their own was happening. After some reading and talking to the GP about the immune system we upped her zinc and vitamin c with a supplement and dabbed them with apple cider vinegar and hey presto they were gone within 2 weeks. May have been coincidence though ! I hope they clear up for your DD OP.

yoursworried · 28/05/2019 12:05

Def molludab. Dd has it badly on her side and under her armpit, thought it would never go and she was getting conscious of it. Tried molludab thinking it wouldn't work but they had disappeared completely within 3 weeks
