Lighthearted: Have you only just realised something is infact not what you thought?

Didn't quite know how to title this but:

I have always thought the second hand on a clock was, like, first and second. Only just found out it means the seconds..... Confused I'm 52.....

What seemingly obvious things have you only just realised are infact not what you thought?

I didn't know that. I'm 50!

Whatthefunk · 24/05/2019 12:46

I thought when the little piggy went to market, he was skipping down the road, with his shopping basket.....devastated. I'm 50....today Grin

danni0509 · 24/05/2019 12:50

@Whatthefunk I didn't realise it was market as in not the shopping market either! Every days a school day!

Happy birthday Thanks

Whatthefunk · 24/05/2019 12:51

Thanks ever so

Sparklingbrook · 24/05/2019 12:51

I thought when talking about football 'on aggregate' meant the surface they played on (like astroturf). Blush

Livedandlearned · 24/05/2019 13:00

@Sparklingbrook what does it mean? Blush

MissTerryLady · 24/05/2019 13:04

Sparkling - I always thought five-a-side football was fibre-side football and it was the name of the surface they played on!

UnicornBrexit · 24/05/2019 13:07

The two clubs drawn as a pair play each other twice, home-and-home. The winner is decided by adding together the scores from the two games -- the aggregate score. If the aggregate score is tied, then the winner is the club that scored more goals on its opponent's field (usually referred to as "the away goals rule").

Livedandlearned · 24/05/2019 13:12

Thank you unicorn

FilledSoda · 24/05/2019 13:33

I don't understand .
If a clock has a hand that counts seconds , wouldn't that be a third hand ?
So the big hand counts hours , the second hand is minutes and a third hand is visibly moving counting the seconds.
I'm going to have to google that now

FilledSoda · 24/05/2019 13:37

Oh no I've got that wrong haven't I ?
The smaller hand is the hours
I'm still confused though .
A lot of clocks don't count the seconds and they will have two hands Blush

SoupDragon · 24/05/2019 13:41

So the big hand counts hours , the second hand is minutes and a third hand is visibly moving counting the seconds.

Um... a clock has an hour hand, a minute hand and a second hand.

jackparlabane · 24/05/2019 13:47

It only dawned on me when teaching my kids to tell time, how confusing it is that the 'big' hand is the short one and the 'little' hand is the long one, especially when they don't make the hour hand fat and the minute one thin.

SoupDragon · 24/05/2019 13:50

The big hand is the minute hand. The long one.
The little hand is the hour hand. The short one.

Seems I was wrong.

I thought people had "a stigmatism", didn't realise its "astigmatism" all one word until the optician told me I have it Thanks

rainbowstardrops · 24/05/2019 14:01

I've never appreciated the 'this little pig went to market' either! 😯
I thought a cute little piggy strolled off to buy a few bits!
What a game changer?!!!!

coffeehabit · 24/05/2019 14:07

A stigmatism. Thought the same Confused

AngeloMysterioso · 24/05/2019 14:09

Narwhals are real.

Until recently I thought they were some sort of fantasy whale-unicorn hybrid!

ThatCurlyGirl · 24/05/2019 14:09

@rainbowstardrops OMG I never thought of this! Poor little piggy!

Also the words to Delilah (Tom Jones) are fucking psychopathic!

RedForShort · 24/05/2019 14:13

Until last week I thought redolent was pronounced re-dole-ent rather than red-o-lent. Had only read it (and pronoched it wrong in my head) and never heard it spoken or (evidently) said it out loud until then.

RedForShort · 24/05/2019 14:14

pronoched: the alternative way of spelling pronounced!!

ThatCurlyGirl · 24/05/2019 14:15

Oh god the more I read of this thread the more I'm realising how much I don't know!

purplelass · 24/05/2019 14:16

I thought 'meme' was pronounced me-me until very recently.

My 15yo was in tears of laughter when I told her Grin

ThatCurlyGirl · 24/05/2019 14:21

@purplelass Hahaha! That's so sweet I might start using me-me!
