Lighthearted: Have you only just realised something is infact not what you thought?

Didn't quite know how to title this but:

I have always thought the second hand on a clock was, like, first and second. Only just found out it means the seconds..... Confused I'm 52.....

What seemingly obvious things have you only just realised are infact not what you thought?

Oops...

Was supposed to be:

I also only got the pun in Shaun (Shorn) the Sheep's name a couple of years ago

Shock

What's the thing about Southampton which endlessly gets trawled out on these posts?

wholelyunimpressed · 24/05/2019 18:27

Not really in the spirit of this (another one of these) thread but I only really paid attention to the lyrics of 'Better the devil you know' by Kylie, today. I thought it was an inspiring disco anthem but it's all about how she'll take a lying cheat back repeatedly because 'better the devil you know' (than the devil you don't, presumably). Was imagining what mumsnet would have to say about it if it was a post on here!

I always trot this one out: Ian Fleming (James Bond author) wrote Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
But I’ve only recently found out that Leonard Nimoy (Spock) directed Three Men and a Baby.
I don’t know why but I just can’t get my head round those!

PantTwizzler · 24/05/2019 18:32

That “infact” is, in fact, two words.

PantTwizzler · 24/05/2019 18:36

The second hand marks seconds, surely?
The dictionary seems to agree (sorry can’t do links on my phone): www.macmillandictionary.com/thesaurus-category/british/parts-of-clocks-and-watches

Another who wants to know how meme is pronounced if it's not me-me Blush

Oh my lord I'm learning so much today I feel like it's one of those fun classes we used to have the Friday before a bank holidays when we watched a film in class 😂

PantTwizzler · 24/05/2019 18:40

Until very recently I thought Mercedes was a Spanish make (because of the girls’ name).

PantTwizzler · 24/05/2019 18:41

Meme is pronounced “meem”.

the pointy bit on the lid on a tube of cream is what you ues to break the seal on the cream
turn the lid upside down and screw it on to the tube and it breaks the seal

SmellsLikeAdultSpirit · 24/05/2019 18:43

The toaster thing is a myth that was doing the rounds last year

Redglitter · 24/05/2019 18:46

My husband told me the dial on our toaster equates to minutes in use. I always just thought it was levels of toastyness

On any toaster I've used the dial indicates the colour of the toast. Nothing to do with the time. I'd say hes wrong

BuckingFrolics · 24/05/2019 18:47

The saying "pool all your money" comes from the French for chicken, ie poulet. They played a game back in the day called jeu de poulet where they basically threw stones at a poor hen having put their bet money in a pot on the table. Anyway we brought that back but being English and thus terrible at pronouncing French words it became "pool".

Poultry comes from the French word poulet too.

If you didn't know this before, how were you managing to open the tube??

BuckingFrolics · 24/05/2019 18:48

If you add water to condensed milk, and stir briskly, you get .... milk.

redzebra10 · 24/05/2019 18:55

Ces6 anything with a pointy end (apoliges for being thick)

ChillaxingInMyKimono · 24/05/2019 19:01

Grin

The toaster one needs to be officially retired from these threads. Sometimes it's minutes, sometimes it's arbitrary levels.

Who, except maybe Satan, would use setting 5, if it generally was minutes?

Florabritannica · 24/05/2019 19:02

Eye pencil sharpeners have a detachable pointy thing for cleaning eye pencil gunk off the blade.

Not going to lie. I was very confused. I read that and thought about cream such as the double, pouring or whipping type.could figure out what it meant.

Got it now!!! Tomato puree has the same.

wholelyunimpressed · 24/05/2019 19:27

I thought second-hand shops only sold second hands Wink

Bezalelle · 24/05/2019 19:33

I used to think "Bayreuth" was the German way to say Beirut, and not an actual German town.

Yea I still struggle to get my head round Richie Cunningham from happy days being a successful director (cocoon, backdraft, appollo 13...)

user1498572889 · 24/05/2019 20:46

@coffeehabit
I thought the second hand was the minute hand and the third hand was the seconds hand. If you know what I mean 😂😂

coffeehabit · 24/05/2019 21:34

user1498572889

Lol! Don't confuse me anymore...I've only just come up to speed on the seconds thing....

This is going to make me sound so dumb...I never knew that sun burn was a real burn, like a fire burn. I burnt my hand a few weeks ago and as it was healing, it got to the flakey peeling off stage. I realised then. In my defence...well, thinking about it I have no defence do I?! Confused
