I’m embarrassed at DP in his cycling Lycra

I started work at 8 today (I’m a cleaner) but forgot my lunch.
DP who was at home today offered to cycle it to me.
As soon as I saw him I ushered him away - 16 1/2 stone squeezed into a Lycra top & shorts (he only cycled 2 miles) everything bulging & not in a pleasant way 😂
I know not many look good in Lycra but really ??

That's a bit much. You have no idea why he is jobless.

Well said - think some posters are just projecting their own issues a bit on this thread.

floraloctopus · 25/05/2019 09:22

Thank you Limekiwi

My ex-boss was a keen cyclist and often went out after work. One day I met him in the stairwell with him in his cycling gear. The sunlight was streaming through the window, went straight through his lycra shorts and clearly revealed his cock and balls to the world. It was an awkward conversation, to say the least.

Don't you just love threads that are deeply unpleasant, fat-shaming someone who's doing something to get fit, sneering at the job-less like it's some character flaw without any knowledge of why they aren't working.

Oh but don't worry, let's just legitimise it by giving it the "Light hearted" label. It's only a bit of light entertainment after all, a joke.

Those of you reckon lycra is only for 'racing' and that jeans are fine might like to read this

Its bizarre the number of threads that defend the womans right to wear what she wants but it seems not to apply to cyclists. I'll stick to my proper shorts and keep my bits in tact thanks

But she's a professional racer though?

Innersmellbow · 25/05/2019 15:11

Is it lycra or cycling that diminishes sex drive?

Or have I just had some unlucky relationships?

Perhaps it's me. Blush

Kernobhead · 25/05/2019 15:15

Cycling to work has become ‘the thing’ for the chaps in my office. They all wear the full Lycra suits, and don’t always change straightaway when the get in, so lots of crotches at eye level for the rest of us sat at our desks... it’s not pleasant!

PARunnerGirl · 25/05/2019 15:23

My BF is around 16 stone, although maybe a slightly different build, as he is muscly/ sporty. He does have the odd love handle so there are still a few lumps and bumps in his Lycra! Seeing him in his cycling gear has the opposite effect on me though, in that I want to drag him off somewhere and have my way with him! Grin

So I’d say the Lycra isn’t the issue here and there are some other underlying things annoying you that you guys need to talk about.

Ohyesiam · 25/05/2019 15:26

Kit often irrationally annoys me. I have cycled long and short distances for years and have NEVER had to wear Lycra. A cycle helmet that ruins my hair, yes, that has a function.
I also go to the gym in a cotton tee shirt ( even though “ nobody exercises in cotton any more, it’s not moisture wicking” according to my trainer. I’m not sweaty so I can wear cotton. Our gym is so cold you’d have to run a marathon in there to break a sweat.

longearedbat · 25/05/2019 15:28

My h is 66, 10 stone and has a figure to die for in lycra. He also has lovely brown shapely legs. I feel a right dumpy thing next to him, but then if I cycled over 100 miles a week perhaps I'd be as slim as him.

NunoGoncalves · 25/05/2019 15:32

Its bizarre the number of threads that defend the womans right to wear what she wants but it seems not to apply to cyclists

Two things:

1 – You ARE entitled to wear what you want in all circumstances. But other people are also entitled to think it's OTT. Those aren't mutually exclusive. I think wearing lycra to leisurely cycle 2 miles is ridiculous but I'd still fight for your right to do so.

2 – It's not just cycling. That's just what you notice because a) you cycle, so you're probably more sensitive to those comments, and b) cycling is very common, so these kinds of conversations come up more. But I would say the same thing about anyone wearing advanced sports gear to do a leisurely hobby. If I saw someone in the gym wearing a lycra singlet, with chalk powder on their hands, snorting a smelling salt before smashing out 10 reps on the lat pulldown machine, I'd say it was OTT.

Teateaandmoretea · 25/05/2019 15:47

But she's a professional racer though?

It is clearly about the issues women face with cycling saddles. Have you ever cycled significant distance like 50 miles plus?

I have cycled long and short distances for years and have NEVER had to wear Lycra.

So what? I love my lycra and I'm comfortable in it. But wearing it isn't compulsory no one is arguing for legislation.

NunoGoncalves · 25/05/2019 15:51

Have you ever cycled significant distance like 50 miles plus?

No but this whole side-discussion is about people wearing lycra for non-serious cycling. I'd say cycling 50 miles plus counts as serious enough.

Who gets to judge at what point someone is worthy of wearing the appropriate kit?

It's an attitude I dont get, and based on offline experience, it's an attitude largely from people who don't involve themselves in exercise and fitness activities.

I've never heard a runner judging a new runner for their kit. I've never heard a cyclist judge a new cyclist for their kit. I've never been in the gym and heard hard-core gym go-ers judge the attire of anyone in the gym or whether they think someone's chalk use is silly. There's an understanding in fitness communities that we all started somewhere and being comfortable helps people consider continuing with the exercise.
The exception would be advice on spending money on kit as a newbie (e.g. I've heard people (rightly) suggest that until you've got to 5km and are running regularly you're probably best holding off on specialist running shoes until you know it's worth the investment or that you hire specialist equipment for water sports until you know it's a keeper)

Icandothisallday · 25/05/2019 16:12

That doesnt add up.

If someone has got a right to wear something, why would some have the right to take the piss out of them.

Taking the piss is trying to police what someone is wearing.

NunoGoncalves · 25/05/2019 16:27

Taking the piss is trying to police what someone is wearing

Firstly, I'm not sure if it counts as "taking the piss" given that my original post just said "I don't really know why anyone wears lycra unless they're actually racing. Bit OTT" and then I was responding the subsequent PP who said "bizarre the number of threads that defend the womans right to wear what she wants but it seems not to apply to cyclists".

My original point stands. Thinking something is OTT is not the same as wanting to stop people doing it. Not even close.

Icandothisallday · 25/05/2019 16:32

You used the phrase ridiculous.

And this thread is taking the piss. The poster that you were responding to was talking about the whole thread.

NunoGoncalves · 25/05/2019 16:33

Yeah but I'm obviously replying from my point of view. I can't speak for anyone else.

LolaSmiles · 25/05/2019 20:02

Thinking something is OTT is not the same as wanting to stop people doing it. Not even close.

So you think it's totally ok for a thread of men mocking women in their running kit to stand? That it's ok because it's just their opinion that it's excessive? That if other men pile in outlining all the faults they see with women's bodies and wobbles that's also OK, after all its just an opinion?

cyclingmad · 28/05/2019 23:24

LolaSmiles excellent post! Sums up what I always try and say on threads that bash cyclists wearing lycra.

So what if he wore lycra for a 2 mile ride - thats just one ride maybe on other days he does longer ries. We don't know that for a fact but we know only of one ride he has done, we also don't know if he then decided to do a longer ride on the way back. To many unknowns and OP hasn't been back to clarify.

cyclingmad · 28/05/2019 23:30

The consensus is that when you first start cycling on your good-as-new, unbruised foof, it is going to hurt. After a “breaking-in” period, the pain-to-numbness ratio becomes favourable: as long as you protect against infection, wear padded shorts with a generous layer of chamois cream, no underwear and make regular offerings to the ingrown hair goddess, things are manageable.

Also for those who say lycra is for serious professional cyclists. I have a road bike and a decent saddle with a bit more padding then the standard seat that comes with the bike. I also wear padded lycra and one weekend getting back into cycling I did 3 days of riding (mix of 9miles to 27 miles) and I ended up with chafing and mostly this was because I missed one day using chamois cream and my padded shorts then had started to come apart abit so instead of a seamless edge the edge of the padding on one side rubbed against my skin and caused chafing - I didn't think it would have given its soft material but it did.

Painful as fuck. So it can happen to any cyclist and if your lucky to ride in normal clothes and not get it then lucky you.
