I’m embarrassed at DP in his cycling Lycra

I started work at 8 today (I’m a cleaner) but forgot my lunch.
DP who was at home today offered to cycle it to me.
As soon as I saw him I ushered him away - 16 1/2 stone squeezed into a Lycra top & shorts (he only cycled 2 miles) everything bulging & not in a pleasant way 😂
I know not many look good in Lycra but really ??

I once got into a lift at work with three of the senior partners all shrink wrapped to the nines in their cycling Lycra. In those close quarters absolutely nothing was left to the imagination. Super awkward.

OldAndWornOut · 23/05/2019 21:46

Get him a basket to go on the bike and he can get the shopping and save you time.

Paddy1234 · 23/05/2019 21:48

I get what OP is saying. Middle aged men in Lycra is not a good look. I would also be distancing my OH if he turned up in it.

HE should be doing the shopping. Please don't wear yourself out like this OP.

CheeseInACake · 23/05/2019 21:51

Full lycra, and no-doubt wraparound shades, for a 2 mile trip, ha ha ha! My mum used to cycle 6 miles each way every weekday to her job as a postmistress, wearing normal trousers, sweater and coat.

RitmoRatmo · 23/05/2019 21:53

This is a horrible thing to start a thread about. Mocking your spouse online for his weight and how he looks in his cycling gear after he brought you your lunch which you’d forgotten?
Next time he should just let you go hungry.

augustusglupe · 23/05/2019 21:54

My DH cycles and has all the gear. He took up cycling 6 months ago, I’m dead proud of him. He’s 5.11 and 12 stone and I have to say looks a ‘bit of a sort’ in his Lycra Wink

Puffinhead · 23/05/2019 21:55

Yep I know what you mean. My DP has a Mr Greedy belly with beanpole legs - encased in lycra it’s a unique look!

DramaAlpaca · 23/05/2019 21:55

My DH is a bit past middle aged & as fit as a fiddle & he looks great in his lycra I'll have you know. Not sure if he'd wear it to cycle two miles, though.

TonTonMacoute · 23/05/2019 21:55

He might have gone off for a ride after delivering the lunch.

I was deeply, deeply anti Lycra cycling kit - until I actually tried it. It is so much more comfortable to wear, if you are making any effort at all. It doesn't half pong afterwards though!

RitmoRatmo · 23/05/2019 21:56

All those jumping on the “middle aged men in lycra”-bashing bandwagon: I’m guessing you’re all super-fit sports enthusiasts are you? With perfect bodies? No? That’s fine, because body size and age shouldn’t matter... I commend anyone of any age/size/fitness who gets off their arse and has a go at being active. If indulging in having all the kit is a motivating factor then good for them.

And fwiw: I LOVE a MAMIL. Some of us find them really sexy actually!

Trills · 23/05/2019 21:56

The lycra is not the problem.

He’s not trying to get fit.
He doesn’t work while I work 10 hours a day supporting us

This is the problem.

RedRiverShore · 23/05/2019 21:58

DH cycles and always wears his cycling lycra however short the journey, he does look a bit comical in it though.

DP should really be getting the shopping though if you are at work and he is not.

00100001 · 23/05/2019 21:58

Why are you getting the shopping?? Confused

agnurse · 23/05/2019 22:03

Cycling is healthy.

Wearing Lycra while doing it is not a necessity and from what you describe, is not pleasant for those around him! I'd be worried that he might get skin irritation if the Lycra isn't breathable.

This reminds me of an email my dad sent me years ago when he and my mother were in Hungary on a trip: "We are having a good time at Lake Balatan. Your mother is grossed out by all the people wearing Speedos." (Mum told me afterward that these were people who probably should not have been wearing Speedos!)

cakeandchampagne · 23/05/2019 22:05

Summer has the right idea- we need a photo. Smile

TinklyLittleLaugh · 23/05/2019 22:05

My old man looks bloody great in his Lycra; 55, 6’1” and 12 stone.

He did a 12 mile round trip to the post office today in his shorts and sandals though. The lycra is reserved for proper cycling.

aweedropofsancerre · 23/05/2019 22:06

It sounds like there is more going on than the lycra look. It sounds like the OP is working long hours and likely everything else when she gets home ...whilst her DH sits at home. I may be wrong but it sounds like she works, does the shopping and likely everything else. Him offering to drop off her lunch in his tight lycra outfit is probably tough as he returns home whilst she works long hours

MorganKitten · 23/05/2019 22:09

If he said the same thing about you I’m sure you’d be upset and blast him on here.

RedRiverShore · 23/05/2019 22:13

Yes it does sound like it’s the not working that is the main problem and OP is working long hours and getting shopping.

I’m not really bothered if DH wears Lycra or not, though sometimes he goes a bit over the top, I would never complain about it though as I wouldn’t like it if he criticised my choice of clothes

megletthesecond · 23/05/2019 22:13

You shouldn't be getting the shopping after a 12hr day.

LimeKiwi · 23/05/2019 22:14

Sounds lovely and like he did you a nice favour.
Would you be Hmm if he posted saying DW rode to see me in her cycling lycra and I was embarrassed to see her and shooed her away?
Why would you even care what he looked like? It wouldn't even register!
YABU.

Well said. If there was a next time I'd be thinking nob off and damn well get it yourself lol

RedRiverShore · 23/05/2019 22:17

Oh and for reference DH is late 50s, 5’10” and about 80kg, I hope that is not ‘outing’ as men’s hobbies are seen as outing on MN Grin

VladmirsPoutine · 23/05/2019 22:17

Ah! A thread that allows me to wheel out my favourite acronym: MAMIL!

I get what you meant OP. Nothing better than the po-faced crowd. That aside, isn't the issue that he needs to be getting a job; any job for the moment whilst he continues to look for his 'perfect' job. What's his contribution to running the household?
