Should I correct the teachers markings?

DD came home with her homework marked.

With this...

"Silly mistake"

It's right 🤔

She would have got full marks but got 29/30 because of this.

I guess it's the comment that's annoyed me. The fact she's been told she's being silly when it's correct.

I also think her comment "silly mistakes" means more "I know you can do this if you take your time and read the question" rather than it having arsey connotations.

To me it looks like the teacher is wrong too, it's 859. 386=x-473 so 386+473=859.

386 = ??? - 473 is just a daft way of writing ??? - 473 = 386. Which would mean that both your DD and the teacher got it wrong. I don't understand this at all. I agree with others, the answer should be 859 surely?

Both the teacher and your DD are wrong. The answer is 859. I wouldn't mention it to your teacher but show your DD how to work out the correct answer.

Also her working out is really wrong if she's subtracting because no way do those numbers subtract to make one less than the original number.

I think it’s 859 as well. The way the calculation is laid out makes you really have to think about what is being asked. Not sure what the teacher means.

Teacher's right and "silly mistakes" is just because she's saying its not that she believes the child cant do it but that its juts not paying attention to the q.

Yes because teachers often make “silly mistakes” too and it’s important a child knows whether they were right in the work or not.

The question isn't very clear, but I would read it as being "386 minus what equals 473. Which would make the answer 859.
