Should I correct the teachers markings?

DD came home with her homework marked.

With this...

"Silly mistake"

It's right 🤔

She would have got full marks but got 29/30 because of this.

I guess it's the comment that's annoyed me. The fact she's been told she's being silly when it's correct.

I'm probably just being a nobby

this is all really interesting - thank you to everyone for explaining! I haven't done maths since I was 15, though I enjoyed it and was good at it. I dread having DD ask for help with maths as, as this has shown, my way of looking at things is way off the mark! Interesting that the OP, her Dh and DD all saw it the same way as me.

I shall know where to come should I get stumped by DD's homework!

Bloody hell! - I can't believe people need this simple maths equation explaining to them! Makes you realise...

@Fresta if the OP is diagnosed dyscalculaic, that's a thing.

My DS is too.

We homeschool him, because the state system is a fuck up, and we can't afford private.

best approach if you are not sure is to go in & state this to teacher & say you would like to help daughter (ie didn't do this this way when I was kid can you help) Teacher explains & if she has made a mistake - its a whoops moment without you telling her she has made a mistake - even if you are confident she has! & smile nicely & apologise for not getting it while you are asking.

Unshriven · 23/05/2019 14:20

@mumwon the teacher hasn't mae a mistake.

Whoops Hmm

The child is wrong.

There's a book called 'Maths for Mums and Dads' by Mike Askew that I found absolutely invaluable :-)

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 23/05/2019 14:37

Fresta do you want to finish that sentence?

unshriven point is you don't say teacher is wrong - you actually ask her to explain - than if - teacher makes mistake it is the tactful way of getting her to check - its not wrong as a parent to ask for help to help your dc? That's the point - but as tmartnmum says saying silly mistake is a little bit ...
