The undercover hospital report.
So incredibly depressing.
Human beings can be so utterly revolting

So very sad and lessons have not been learnt

I've been in quite a few of these types of hospitals over the years in a professional capacity.

The best ones usually don't have lots of men running them. I know that sounds very sexist and I must stress I've met lots of lovely male carers and nurses over the years, but ultimately as with any work environment a confident, dominant group of men can set the tone of the whole workplace for the worse, and sadly in places like this vulnerable people suffer the brunt of a dangerous and abusive culture.

It's incredibly difficult to break that kind of culture without well trained confident and experienced managers who have the budget to employ proper members of staff who actually care and want to be there rather than the rejects who couldn't hold down a job with the local builders because they didn't like being told what to do by the foreman.

It's incredibly difficult as a young, inexperienced care worker to go into that kind of situation and challenge it when all the older and more experienced members of staff are telling you that this is his it's fine.

If we as a society refuse to properly fund care for the vulnerable then this will keep happening.

It comes down to caring carers
Valuing people who work in care
Valuing people full stop
And money .

No-one sees caring as a career and it is like working in any caring role it needs to be valued (by people and better pay).

Shocking but unfortunately not surprising older people care homes are no better

I have sister with learning disabilities so it's very close to home. The whole report was so distressing. Agree we should care about the carers but ultimately someone is trying to make a profit because it's been privatised. I'm actually crying at moment and can't seem to calm myself.

Nhs care is no better imo privatisation is just one 'excuse'
Many nhs sites were shut so carers joined private companies unfortunately it is 'the culture of care' that enables these things to happen imo.

Sad thing is the constant regurgitating of standard phrases and the classic “Lessons will be learnt” 😡

Yeah they should all be charged with something. What they’ve done is far worse than chucking a milkshake at a racist prick, for example.

Winterbourne happened a few years ago, same thing, everyone outraged, etc, nothing has changed, this is still happening and will continue to until priority is given to paying proper staff a proper wage and raising the standards of these institutions instead of treating them as a dumping ground- but let’s be honest, is anything going to really happen other than public promises of change and sod all really being put in place? Maybe if the inept government weren’t so caught up in their own egos and naval gazing they could look outside and see what is really happening to society’s vulnerable and care enough to do something about it

What I don't get is that there are loads of jobs that are easier and better paid that they could be doing, if they don't actually care for people! Why do they even do the job? I think some of them actually go into it to target the poor people they are meant to be caring for, which is absolutely flabbergasting,

You cant blame it all on low pay. There are some excellent carers out there and the registered nurses will be getting the same pay as other caring nurses. It's a difficult job but there are some horrible cruel uncaring people working with vulnerable people in hospitals and prisons and homes. I am guessing they were all DBS checked which makes a mockery of the interview process.

As someone who works with pre-school children with additional needs, I am beyond horrified that the hell portrayed in tonight's Panorama is still a reality for so many vulnerable people. God forbid it's a future that might await some of the children at my nursery.

it was awful to watch but can i just say i work in the nhs in a similar setting s to this and i have never seen anyone being treated that bad. that evil man taunting the ads girl who didn't like men. what a twat i hope his balls get cut off in an accident there was no need for his behaviour.

It was distressing to watch. I can't imagine the fear those people must have felt on a daily basis. The nurse should be struck off and they all should face criminal charges. Absolute monsters. It must have been really hard for the reporter not to step in. Nobody deserves to live like that :( as far as I can see there was absolutely no treatment.

I did wonder where the psychiatrist was though? The one girl (Alex?) was on a section. Where was the doctor and her care plan?!

People with autism and learning disabilities are criticised for being violent and unpredictable, but is it any wonder when they're being treated like this? I know that not everywhere treats people in this way, but even someone being bossy or loud can cause fear and distress to patients. There needs to be higher rates of pay, more careful selection and personality screening of potential staff and lots of training and support.

Higher rates of pay won’t stop this. And women are just as bad as men. Have personally been victimised by a gang of female carers when raising concerns about abuse. They were evil and had no compassion for the vulnerable kids they were supposed to be looking after. The type is a bully at school and continues to bully when working. These places have such a high staff turnover that a blind eye is turned to a lot of behaviours to keep places running and profits rolling in. Decent staff don’t stay. And they wouldn’t be employable elsewhere.

How about not putting children in these places at all.

It must be very difficult trying to care for such challenging patients. I couldn't do it. But there's no excuse for such cruelty. These so called carers were enjoying themselves being so nasty.

If the children being put in these places I would wish a better understanding of autism as we are currently in the dark ages. Why do these places exist. They traumatise not help autism.

@VenusStarr Everyone in that building is under section. They have in house doctors, psychiatrists, occupational therapists and activities coordinators, but they all work across several sites, so aren't there the full time. They also only work day shifts.

The people in that documentary are facing both work based consequences (obviously can't specify as I'm not supposed to know), and criminal charges, alongside several other staff members who haven't broken the law, but have breached safeguarding and whistleblowing policies. Practice and security in every building is being overhauled, and staff are being sent on training earlier than the annual re-train if they're not completely up to scratch.

There are some serious staffing issues within the company as a whole, particularly in the specialist hospitals such as WH, and until those are sorted, there's always going to be a risk of sadistic pricks like those in the footage slip through the net. There are massive failings, but things are improving.

The only way they can improve is by shutting it down and removing that companies ability to operate.
