I’ve just read the books and watched the TV adaptations, though I can’t find the first series online.

What did you think of the TV versions?

Also, from book 3 - was sacking Robin part of the plan? To keep her out of the way?

And I think the police went round to Donald Laing’s flat, but I thought it was supposed to be bare apart from a bed and the fridge etc. Where did they sit?

No one?

I never stuck with the tv series! Love the books but the series bored me.

Have you read the latest one?

PatriciaCarmichael · 22/05/2019 19:48

I did because I was doing a binge. I agree they aren’t as good as the books. I’ve read that the next one will be 4 parts I think, so that might be better to watch and less will be cut from the books.

Yes I’ve read the latest one - with the MP and the family etc?

I think they’re ok.
First book is the best one imo.
Second one too easy to guess the murderer.
Third one I like, I used to live where a lot of it was set.
Fourth one too long, might have to re read.
Not keen on it turning into a love story though.
Adaptations are good, well cast I think. Looking forward to next one.
Books are always better though.

topcat2014 · 22/05/2019 22:17

Is there a new series in the offing? Quite liked the ones so far.
Haven't read the books as I hate reading

Ohyesiam · 22/05/2019 22:19

I think Cuckoo is the best.
She writes great characters and I love the dynamic between Strike and Robyn.

fedup21 · 22/05/2019 22:20

I thought they were brilliant-books and series!

Daffodil2018 · 22/05/2019 22:47

I love the books and the series too. The guy who plays Strike is brilliant. Robin is a touch too pretty though Grin

I thought the most recent book was the best so far.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 22/05/2019 22:51

I like them and have read them several times. I think he sacked Robin in temper but then when he calmed down realised she was safer that way.

cantfindname · 23/05/2019 01:43

Thank you! This is a series of books I want to read and had forgotten about. I have read a couple and loved them, very strong characterisation.

JustSomebodie · 23/05/2019 01:50

Halfway through Lethal White. Didn't know there was a TV series!

BalloonSlayer · 23/05/2019 07:18

I like them too. I think I just enjoy her writing and am not sure why . . . I guessed who did the first one straight away but it didn't ruin it for me at all.

I think Cormoran Strike's leg is the same as Harry Potter's scar - always "hurting more than it's ever done before, complete and absolute agony beyond description" but at the same time doesn't stop him doing anything, ever. Grin

SnowsInWater · 23/05/2019 08:45

I didn't know there was a TV series either (though I am in Aus so maybe I can't access it). Love the books, I was just checking the other day when the next one is likely to be out but I don't think any time soon.

Buttery81 · 23/05/2019 09:03

Yes, I love the TV series! Isn’t there meant to be a new series coming soon? Does anyone know when?

KnobJockey · 23/05/2019 10:28

I've only recently read the books, started Cuckoo on TV but it didn't grab me (when they change things I just want to turn it over), but the audio books are worth a listen- the narrator is good for it, and the stories carry over to listening well. I appreciate I may be strange for listening to something exactly the same as I've already read though!

PatriciaCarmichael · 23/05/2019 12:27

I’ve got no idea when the new one will be shown.

That’s interesting Balloon and yes, sometimes it’s Hmm how he is in agony but then continues to walk for several miles.

I think you get more of an idea of how it affects him when you see it on screen. Like using his upper body to haul himself around, or when he uses a chair as a makeshift crutch.

Do you know who the narrator is Knob?

I’ve now had Don’t fear the reaper by blue öyster cult in my head all day!

@PatriciaCarmichael someone called Robert Glenister. He suits the book.

BookWitch · 23/05/2019 19:14

I've listened to them on Audible. Robert Glenister is a well known actor, (Hustle, Life on Mars etc) - he's a good narrator.

I enjoyed them, not seen the TV series.
I think I am in the minority for liking Lethal White the best (Yes, a bit long, but I rattled through it quicker that Career of Evil)

EL2019 · 23/05/2019 19:22

Lethal white is my favourite too bookwitch.
Career of evil is my least favourite, not because it’s not good, but I hate listening to the chapters from the killers point of view. They’re so horrible.

Another vote for Robert Glenister as narrator.

IDontDrinkTea · 23/05/2019 20:01

I love this series!

Although the latest instalment reminds me of HP from book four... suddenly they’ve got popular and so the editor isn’t as brace suggesting to cut out a loaf of pointless stuff. Felt like there was a fair amount of waffle in there 🤷🏼‍♀️

PatriciaCarmichael · 23/05/2019 20:39

Yes I like him, thanks Knob and Book.

Has anyone listened to Radio 3/ knows who Clemency Burton Hill is? Is she meant to be Elin? Seems an odd coincidence - also blonde and pretty former violinist turned Radio 3 presenter. Though I don’t think she’s Swedish.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 23/05/2019 21:12

I have to say my least favourite is The Silkworm. There's something about it that makes me feel queasy.

PrivateIsles · 24/05/2019 00:13

Absolutely loved Cuckoo's Calling, every single character in it was fab (especially Guy and Tansy), and it was so well done. Agree with PP who said JK writes great characters.

I enjoyed the other books too, but the first one was my favourite by far.

Quite like the programme, especially the opening sequence and the music! I wish they'd given more episodes to each book though - it just wasn't enough time to reflect the story fully. Good casting though.

PatriciaCarmichael · 24/05/2019 17:30

I know Gretchen I like the world it’s set in, it’s interesting as JK knows it well, but otherwise I’m a bit squeamish about the rest.

Yes definitely Private, series 1 is better for being 3 episodes rather than 2 like the others, but even then could be longer.
