Just that, is anybody not voting and didn't vote last time?

OP posts:
ChardonnaysPrettySister · 23/05/2019 08:55

Also utterly disillusioned and disappointed and and disgusted with all of them.

Is there a dis I missed?

buttery81 · 23/05/2019 09:09

Prepared to get flamed for this, but I’ve never voted in a European election, as I don’t really see how MEPs have any bearing on my/our lives to be honest. If you asked me who my current MEP is I wouldn’t have a clue! I’m not sure how many other people would either.

Add to that the fact that we’re apparently meant to be leaving the EU by Halloween, and there really doesn’t seem like much point at all.

happymummy12345 · 23/05/2019 09:10

I've never voted for anything political and never will. I'm not interested at all and I just don't care. I've got better things to do.

cucumbergin · 23/05/2019 09:13

@chardonnaysprettysister

If you're politically homeless, go to www.remainvoter.com/ hold your nose and vote for their reccomendation.

Then email whichever party it was & say "you're only getting it this one time to keep the fascists out".

SleepingStandingUp · 23/05/2019 09:16

@happymummy12345 I don't get how you have no interest in what happens. I'm assuming you're not low income so affected by benefit changes or minimum wages.
Or the squeezed middle screwed from both ends.
Maybe it's the joy of being so we'll off you feel utterly protected by any crap the government pull. Any opinions on inheritance tax or give rate tax payers? @

KennDodd · 23/05/2019 09:16

@happymummy12345
@buttery81

I agree with the previous poster. If you don't care about politics then just vote green, you must care about the poor planet and our environment surely?

buttery81 · 23/05/2019 09:31

If it were a general election I would absolutely vote, although I have no idea who I’d choose, given how awful the Tories and Labour both are. I’m just not interested in the European ones (sorry). I did vote (remain) in the EU referendum but admit I wasn’t very educated about why I was doing so. I basically just didn’t want to upset the status quo - better the devil you know and all that.

birdonawire1 · 23/05/2019 09:37

Not voting, and never comment on government decisions so that's ok.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 23/05/2019 09:38

I’m in London, so LibDem would be a very logical option, but I’m only going to be doing it under duress, I have my own reasons to distrust them.

How on Earth did it come to this.

Itscoldouthere · 23/05/2019 09:49

I don’t understand how anyone can not have a single view 😳 how do you go through life not being interested in things that effect us all so much?

I get being disheartened by what’s happening at the moment, but surely you want to be heard and counted in some small way?

I don’t understand how people like happymummy12345 live?

I’m not being rude but I just don’t understand that view !

cucumbergin · 23/05/2019 09:54

Thanks ChardonnaysPrettySister - I realise it must be hard to vote for a party you distrust but I appreciate it, because any vote that's not for Farage or UKIP helps (Farage wins big if turnout is low). Voting is always a matter of the lesser evil and this time the greater evil is basically fucking Nazis.

It keeps me and other BAME family & friends a little bit safer if the fascists don't get a landslide. And fucking terrified if they do, because we know what the results will be in terms of encouraging the pondlife to harass and attack us.

Redwinestillfine · 23/05/2019 09:57

The vote today isn't really about giving your support to a certain political party. It will be taken as a referendum on Brexit and used to indicate whether the country wants a hard Brexit or not. Don't make the mistake made In the referendum of not voting. I think this is a situation where every vote will count. You have Indicated you want things to remain as they were. You need to vote for a remain party, whoever it is. If not your silence may inadvertently lead to a hard Brexit and like those who didn't vote in the referendum and didn't want the reality of Brexit (or those that voted to give the government a kicking and didn't imagine their vote would actually lead to Brexit )

SleepingStandingUp · 23/05/2019 09:58

@Itscoldouthere I can only assume they're so financially secure that they feel untouchable. If you are low income then every bloody policy affects you, the squeezed middle feel screwed from both ends, even the well to do surely get annoyed by inheritance tax and taxing of high earners. How protected must you be to feel totally untouchable

PerfectPeony2 · 23/05/2019 09:58

I think it’s morally wrong not to vote and I hope people don’t see this thread and decide not to! My Grandma always used to say how important it is, she never missed a vote even when she had a baby the previous day! Seriously, women died for this. I’m sure most people could do a bit of a research and make a vote that is most suitable for their circumstances.

Redwinestillfine · 23/05/2019 09:58

You will have absolutely no right to complain

Langrish · 23/05/2019 10:00

No, will always vote if only tactically. Irresponsible not to.
Presumably you won’t be offering any further opinions on the political state of the nation after choosing to opt out?

Monkeyssplit · 23/05/2019 10:03

Not voting send a message alright. It says 'do whatever you want. I do not care and will do nothing about it.'

Langrish · 23/05/2019 10:03

happymummy12345

I've never voted for anything political and never will. I'm not interested at all and I just don't care. I've got better things to do.”

What an extraordinary attitude. All of those better things are impacted by the political state of the nation. Bizarre.

LonelyTiredandLow · 23/05/2019 10:13

Thought I'd share a link from Catherine Bearder's Twitter on British Steel and why you should vote for someone who turns up at least!

llangennith · 23/05/2019 10:28

Of course I'll be voting.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 23/05/2019 10:33

Oh I’m very much a Remainer, a veteran of three Marches, and many petitions.

I’m really tired of the waiting, the constant bad news, the realisation that people either don’t care or buy the Hard Brexit bollocks they are being fed.

Lllot5 · 23/05/2019 11:13

I’ve just voted. Not saying who for.
The school was deserted I was the only one there, hopefully be busier later after people have finished work.
My Nan actually chained herself to railings once, looked at her picture this morning, I’m absolutely going to vote.

notvoting · 23/05/2019 11:23

I'm disillusioned, frustrated, and confused. I have really tried to understand the process and what impact of voting (or not voting) today means in real terms. I don't understand tactical voting. I don't trust politicians, and am fed up with the infighting, ego, one-upmanship and theatre.

I read a post earlier on MN today that one of the party's on the ballot paper has a tag line? Surely that's not legal if the other's don't?

Call it apathy or ignorance but it's my democratic right NOT to vote. I've voted for the past 34 years and trust me when I say I'm saddened at how I feel.

Tavannach · 23/05/2019 11:53

I don't understand tactical voting

Assuming you are opposed to the main party likely to win (Brexit in this election) tactical voting is voting for the party most likely to keep them out.
The d'Hondt system of proportional representation as used in this country makes it harder for the smallest parties to win but gives a fairish overall representation.
So the pro remain parties are Lib Dems, Greens, Change UK and others. Each region selects at least 3 MEPs.

remain voter and remain United both offer suggestions of how to vote tactically in your region. Their suggestions may well be different since they are taking different approaches. Just choose the one you like best.

So basically if you are pro Remain, vote Lib Dem, Green or Change UK unless there's a smaller party you want to support. Labour are trying to be all things to all people and are not backing Remain or Leave, a course of action they are almost sure to regret.

The important thing is to vote. The votes will be counted. It's democracy in action.
