Are there any conspiracy theories that you just think could have an element of truth?

I love all things conspiracy theory - from a psychological/social point of view it's interesting to see what makes people fearful or pessimistic.

But I often do see some conspiracy theories a bit like Urban legends in that they could be an exaggerated truth.

Are there any conspiracy theories or rumours that you just think 'maybe...' or even ones you're completely sold on.

David Icke takes it too far. If you cherry pick the forums though you get some interesting theories.

BishopBrennansArse · 21/05/2019 11:33

Just to confirm no more pms thanks.

Lweji · 21/05/2019 11:34

Religion. I'm just gonna leave this here because I know so many folks will go absolutely batshit. I totally fail to get why anyone believes in any of it.

Are you saying you think there's an element of truth to Religion? Grin

SaveKevin · 21/05/2019 11:35

Did anyone watch the bbc AND itv jill dando programmes?
What I found interesting was the complete polar opposite views.
So same content, same evidence. Very different conclusions.

🙈

MyBlueMoonbeam · 21/05/2019 11:38

Some people believe that Dan Brown is a historian

Some people even manage to read more than 2 pages of his books 😬

99RedBalloonz · 21/05/2019 11:39

I can't really believe that planes fly - that enormous heavy thing just jumping off the ground. You take your seat among rows of other people, you are served with drinks or treated with disdain depending on how much you paid. It gets noisy and rumble-y, the "special" air con kicks in, you feel like you're rushing along then floating. A couple of weeks later you tell all your friends how unbelievable Bali is, and how relaxed you feel.

Lweji · 21/05/2019 11:39

Plus isn't it third world countries that would need population control not the west.

Yes. The West has a declining or very slowly rising population, often just improved by immigration.

And population growth is mostly about high fertility rates with high infant survival rates. Increased life expectancy as adults is another, but relatively minor, factor..

I tend to find that most conspiracy theories (or batshit theories like creationism and flat earth) tend to flourish among those with limited knowledge about the subjects.

BishopBrennansArse · 21/05/2019 11:43

Sorry all, not meaning to snark but I've sent over 100.

fedup21 · 21/05/2019 11:45

Will someone else please PM me what Bishop said? I asked yesterday but obviously wasn’t one of the lucky 100!

DarlingNikita · 21/05/2019 11:46

Vote, He said it sounded like a loud construction accident
So he'd heard loads of jumbo jets hitting skyscrapers for purposes of comparison?

Um, no, it's the EXACT opposite Confused
The man heard jumbo jets hitting skyscrapers, a sound that (I assume) he had never heard before and couldn't place, so he thought it was/sounded like a construction accident, which he (presumably) HAD heard before.

sashh · 21/05/2019 11:48

We never went to the moon. No one believes we ever did, surely?

Yes.

If they had faked it they would have needed better tech than they actually had to get to the moon.

eg the first spacewalk had to be routed via Australia. Can you imagine how complex that would be then?

You would have had to somehow get the fake footage into a satellite and launch it without the USSR noticing.

You have to shoot the secret footage in a new format, similar to night vision, that was classified and unknown to the outside world.

Then you have to broadcast that, fooling the scientists in Australia who convert the signal into something that can be then sent to a satellite and 'bounced' into NASA.

If you think the landings were faked what do you think Apollo 13 was?

NunoGoncalves · 21/05/2019 11:50

They could just shut down projects or refuse to fund projects with the potential to find cures though

But not all research is publicly funded.

Also that would lead back to the large scale/transparency issue. If all publicly funded cancer research was having its funding rescinded/not granted, a LOT of people would know about it. Far too many for the government to silence.

NunoGoncalves · 21/05/2019 11:53

I heard that Bishop is a mumsnet mod in disguise and has actually sent zero PMs. The whole thing is a conspiracy to create intrigue and distract mumsnet users, to stop them overthrowing MNHQ.

BishopBrennansArse · 21/05/2019 11:54

😂😂😂

I've had that many 'Mumsnet calling' emails I'll never make mod

There's a lot of money towards cancer research. Whole institutes devoted to it. A huge number of scientific articles. There is no shortage of money as such. It's just bloody hard.

Lweji · 21/05/2019 12:10

Of course it depends on what people mean by "we".
I'm pretty sure I haven't been to the moon, and I'd bet no MN user has ever been either.

The thing is that there is very little to gain from having people on the Moon. The missions accomplished what they set out to do and unmanned missions are much cheaper and easier these days (see Mars missions).
I hardly even see the point of sending anyone to Mars except for just pride and it being a fantastic adventure.

Besides, Space 1999 has already shown it's not a good idea to settle on the moon. Shame people don't seem to pay attention to 2001, or 2010. Or Total Recall. Or even The Martian.

VoteJadot · 21/05/2019 12:18

Yes DarlingNikita that was rather my point...

bigKiteFlying · 21/05/2019 12:21

There's talk about a space station round the Moon - I think NASA is trying to make hay while Trump is interested in space.

Re Brexit being a CT, I just think that is it one of many things that the gov dreamed up to throw out there when they needed to to keep folks busy and feeling important and like they had a say. By that I mean, giving people the vote at all, saying they would and then doing it. Not the outcome of the vote, although I think that was massaged. But just look at the amount of hatred swilling about compared to say, 10 or 15 or 20 years ago. It's horrible.

I do think they are deflecting attention, but then I also lean towards the idea that there is an illuminati rather than the actual people being in charge that we think are in charge. So I'm not saying David Cameron was sat there a few years ago rubbing his hands thinking, right, this'll sort em for a bit. He and Theresa are as much in the dark as most folk, perhaps a little less so than the average man on the street but still pawns nonetheless in the larger scheme of things.
Just my opinion.

ArDali1 · 21/05/2019 12:24

I have once heard that there's a theory there is a cure for cancer but it's too expensive to make a lot of and that the government is keeping it a secret as to depopulate.

Although I have read somewhere quite recent the institute of Cancer research are trying to find a way to turn cancer into a longterm condition that people can live with rather than a cure.

Lweji · 21/05/2019 12:25

No government in the West wants to depopulate, FGS.

fancynancyclancy · 21/05/2019 12:26

Why do people think about Huawei?
