Anyone in London who can help? Staying in Watford but want to have a night out in London!

We are going to do the Harry Potter tour next month. This is the same weekend as our anniversary so have booked 2 nights to make a weekend of it. We are staying in Watford (premier inn central). I have looked at trains but they end at midnight but there are buses that run through the night, do they go from Euston station as well? Thanks for any help on this, I am clueless!

I'll have a look, it will all be on the TfL site, transport for London.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 16/05/2019 16:18

There will undoubtedly be night buses in London.

I used to get the 142 to Edgware or 258 to Stanmore tube stations and then the tube in, cheaper than the train from Watford Junction and might run later.

This was years ago though so I hope someone more in the know will be here shortly!

Sizeofalentil · 16/05/2019 16:21

Uber is fairly cheap to use - try an online fare calculator before considering night buses etc to see if it's in your budget

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 16/05/2019 16:23

Watford is quite a long way out!

LondonLandonLindon · 16/05/2019 16:24

Yeah I feel like I’ve made a mistake booking Watford, it was soooo much cheaper and we are driving down so there is parking there but we want to go out in London. Maybe I should look for hotels in London instead? The train fair is 22 per person per day so if we do that Friday-Sunday it adds up. I’ll check Uber out now though. Alternatively is Watford good for nights out?

Tube to Stanmore then an Uber or a bus from there probably your best bet.

Hobbes8 · 16/05/2019 16:29

I misspent my youth in Watford so others might have more of an up to date view. It’s quite “townie” for a night out compared to london - there’s a strip of bars near the nightclub of many names (kudos/Destiny in my day) and at kicking out time everyone mills about getting cabs and kebabs. It’s not unsafe but can be a bit of a lads vibe. It’s very different to a night out in Soho or Shoreditch.

CatToddlerUprising · 16/05/2019 16:30

Watford is pretty rubbish for nights out now.

LondonLandonLindon · 16/05/2019 16:41

I’ve seen a hotel (Hilton double tree) in Greenwich. I’ve been there before and it’s lovely and the hotel is within our (low!!) budget. We don’t mind getting the tube or train and there’s parking at the hotel... would It be a nightmare?

Ps thanks for all the responses!

There's a train from Euston to Watford at 1:34. They used to run way later until fairly recently as well.

You could look for somewhere intermediate between Watford and London. Maybe around Wembley if there's no events on as that would be cheaper than staying centrally and getting in from zone 3 will be way cheaper. Then you can still get the night tube and it's easy enough to drive to the HP studios.

cyantist · 16/05/2019 16:43

Just saw update - how would you be getting from Greenwich to the HP studios and back?

bassackwards · 16/05/2019 17:04

Have you looked at Airbnb for something more central eg in London near Euston? There might be some options on there that are cheaper than the hotels you're looking at

HappyHammy · 16/05/2019 17:23

The Greenwich Hilton is in deptford. Where are the gp studios.

HappyHammy · 16/05/2019 17:23

Not gp, h.p.

LondonLandonLindon · 16/05/2019 17:27

We would get the train to Euston then to Watford. The tickets are booked for 1 on the Saturday. I’ve nwver booked with air B and B, we only have a budget of about 200 (and that’s a stretch, the Watford hotel is only £127 for 2 nights!!) is Deptford outside of Greenwich? Thanks again

HappyHammy · 16/05/2019 17:33

Yes deptford has it's own station. What dates are you looking at and how many people. Where are you driving down from. Or are you getting the train the whole journey. Happy to look at other hotels.

OhDiddums · 16/05/2019 17:40

Deptford is not far from Greenwich but not the greatest of locations. However you can easily get into central london from there. Only thing is it's not close to the Harry Potter studios. So you'd have to travel from Deptford into Central London, then to Euston then to Watford. So you're still going to pay for 2 days of travel in zone 1. Have you thought about one night on Watford for Harry Potter studios and the other closer to central.

LondonLandonLindon · 16/05/2019 17:43

I’ve ended up booking a cheap train to make it easier, worked out 50 quid for the both of us. We will be arriving at 18.30 on the Friday (14th June) and leaving in the evening on Sunday. We aren’t really looking to pay more then £200 ish quid for the 2 nights which I know really restricts us!

@Hobbes8 was kudos/destiny in my day too! Bet we rubbed shoulders there or in Bar Risa Grin

There’s also a Watford tube station by the way - it’s a walk from Watford Junction but probably only a fiver in a cab. Not likely to run as late.

Premier Inn Edgeware which is on the Northern line, not too far from Watford as I say you can get a bus which is probably pretty cheap.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 16/05/2019 17:51

Stunning x-post Grin

Hobbes8 · 16/05/2019 17:54

Ooh I bet we did! Was Bar Risa the same place as the Ice Bar? Happy days...

ZipityFlippity · 16/05/2019 18:07

Look for a hotel around Edgware, it's kind of between Watford and going into London and might be reasonably priced.

Greenwich is a very long journey from Watford.

ForalltheSaints · 16/05/2019 18:31

Late train from Euston or taxi from Stanmore and staying in Watford seems OK to me. Deptford is south of the river, so no cabs (allegedly).

bebeboeuf · 16/05/2019 18:33

Can you cancel the Watford hotel?
