Anyone in London who can help? Staying in Watford but want to have a night out in London!

We are going to do the Harry Potter tour next month. This is the same weekend as our anniversary so have booked 2 nights to make a weekend of it. We are staying in Watford (premier inn central). I have looked at trains but they end at midnight but there are buses that run through the night, do they go from Euston station as well? Thanks for any help on this, I am clueless!

Does this look ok?

It looks close to Euston as well?

Or the Novotel in Greenwich? I wouldn’t mind staying here because we only need to get to Watford for the afternoon then we’ve got 2 other days?

Yeah that hotel looks close to Euston looks like the nearest tube is Russell Square which is a really close walk

redbedheadd · 16/05/2019 19:15

Don't stay Greenwich it's not very central at all and super far from Watford

therearenogoodusernamesleft · 16/05/2019 19:17

Greenwich is about as far away from Watford as you could humanly book Grin. Anywhere else in London would be better ☺️

Applesbananaspears · 16/05/2019 19:17

Go to The Grove for dinner, it’s a 5* hotel with amazing food. There’s also an excellent steak place near there called Prime. Alternatively go to St Albans for a night out. If you do go into London take an Uber to Watford junction or walk there and take the train to Euston and go out in kings cross, loads of fab places such as German gymnasium

LondonLandonLindon · 16/05/2019 19:17

some of the reviews are a bit rubbish for the apartments, think I’ll go with the Novotel. It’s right by the station

Greenwich is so unbelievably far from Watford I wouldn’t even consider it, it’s a good 2 hours away on public transport

LondonLandonLindon · 16/05/2019 19:23

Oh 2 hours haha. Ok maybe I’ll just book the apartments, we’ll only be sleeping there

The last train from Euston to Watford is at 1.30am. Next at 5ish. Train takes around 20mins. It’s £45 in an Uber.

Last euston/Watford train is 0130 during week if you're partying in London during the week until 0100 you're going to challenge your budget?
Wrt staying elsewhere travelling to hp from further in than watford and guaranteeing you get there by 1300 takes out most of the morning anyway, I'd stay in Watford

  • if you have kids book a slot in rock-up in the intu centre for say 10 - get lunch then hop on the hp bus from the station - hp are not especially strict about enforcing timeslots so if you do arrive a bit early it gives you more time (and you'll need it)
cyantist · 16/05/2019 19:53

It's not 2 hours from Greenwich to Watford by public transport at all. Train, northern line, then another train should only take an hour. The Novotel seems to be right next to the station, and there's the bus to HP studios from outside Watford junction. It's not that bad a journey and Greenwich is lovely so you could maybe do stuff around the on the other days.

Just don't get the overground from Euston! That takes about 50 minutes compared to normal train that takes less than 20.

MrsPatmore · 16/05/2019 20:01

Greenwich has a tube line (Jubilee - North Greenwich) that runs all night on Friday and Saturday nights although it's a short bus ride or taxi from the Novotel. It's straightforward to get to HP Studios but about an hour and a half or so depending on the connections. It's plenty 'do-able' and Greenwich is a great London base. Get the boat up the river to central London or, if you're young, Shoreditch/Hackney for a night out. Sounds like you'll have a tiring but great weekend!

Google maps is your friend

Cuddlysnowleopard · 16/05/2019 20:09

What time are you thinking of staying out until? Last train to Watford is perfectly doable, but you just have to make sure you don't miss it (bitter experience...Hmm).

I wouldn't bother with Watford for a night out, unless you're 19 years old and on the pull. The restaurants like The Grove are lovely, but expensive, and I think you can get far better for you money in London.

SouthWestmom · 16/05/2019 20:29

What are the times and days of the tour?

SouthWestmom · 16/05/2019 20:31

Stay near Euston and just go there for the tour?

redbedheadd · 16/05/2019 21:21

Download the app Citymapper - so good for getting about, trains, buses - way way better than TFL

LondonLandonLindon · 17/05/2019 07:43

We won’t really be going out out as in discos (is that what they are still called Blush) but we would go for a drink and would really like to go to the shard for drinks. I’ve booked this apartment near Euston but now I’m thinking just book the Novotel in Greenwich. I’ve been there for the day before and really like it. Especially the market and the park. We only need to get to Watford for the afternoon (tickets are booked for 1pm) . God I’m so indecisive, I’ve had these tickets booked for months!

I’ve looked and Greenwich is 36 minutes from Euston on 2 tubes/trains. We get in London at 6.30 Friday night so we’d be at the hotel for 7.30 and could go for drinks/a wander around Greenwich Friday night, breakfast then head to Harry Potter Saturday then drinks and food Saturday night to celebrate our anniversary then spend Sunday doing all the tourist things like London Eye, Tower of London then train home...

Sounds like the perfect itinerary and should work well but you may be tired at the end of it!

twilightcafe · 17/05/2019 13:22

You could use the Night Tube to Stanmore (end of the Jubilee line) and get a taxi to Watford.

Halsall · 17/05/2019 13:31

That apartment is absolutely fine. It's about a 5-minute walk from Euston in a square full of hotels.

Euston is where you get the train to Watford for the HP tour, a 15 or 20-min journey, and a bus goes direct to the studios from the station forecourt. You're very unlikely to be the only people going to the studios as it's massively popular.

Why bother to trek all the way out to Greenwich if you want a night out in Central London? Book the apartment!

updownleftrightstart · 17/05/2019 13:47

I think either staying at Watford or Greenwich would be fine really. But have you considered staying Friday night in Watford then heading to somewhere central after the tour and staying there? You could maybe afford a little more for a hotel on the Saturday night then because the Friday night would have been cheaper, plus you'd be saving a lot on taxis/trains after your night out
