Help. Urgent. Is this chickenpox or just hives?

5 year old DD was complaining of being itchy last night. DH did pyjamas and said it was hives (he suffered a lot as a child). This morning she has loads and I’m wondering if it’s chickenpox. Oldest child so no experience of this!!

Looks like CP to me.

How many spots does she have, have they increased/become redder since last night? That second post definitely looks like a blister unfortunately.

Hives are blotchy lumps rather than spits so I'd say chicken pox.

Feck! DH is adamant it’s hives (he had them really bad when he was young) but some of them look like blisters. I’ll keep her off today.

OP: it's possible to have both. When my youngest had chicken pox he also broke out in hives. Hospital said he had an allergic reaction to the chicken pox virus and gave him an antihistamine injection.
I would get your little one checked as my DS ended up really poorly quite quickly until he had the injection

Chicken pox is rife atm.

DD often gets hives in response to another virus. So it's possible that CP has caused this in your DD.

However - neither of your photos look at all like hives. Hives are large, irregular patches, not round spots.

The other possibility might be bites? Has she been out and about outside, or could it be fleas or something? I and my son react to bites and often end up with a small blister in the middle of a bite.

How is she in herself? Both mine had snuffly noses immediately prior to going down with the pox, and had temperatures for several days when it first started. One was only under the weather for a few days, the other was obviously very poorly for about a week.

The pattern the spots make is part of CP. does she have any on her back?

The one which looks like the top has been scratched off is a bit indeterminate.

Has she had antihistamine yet?

This is her back. She has spent the last 2 evenings in the garden with DH so I was wondering about bites but no one else has bites (including my 2 year old).

She’s fine in herself. Maybe a tiny bit under the weather after school yesterday but she perked up in the evening.

I think everyone gets bitten, but only certain people react to them and so it obvious that they have been bitten. In my family DS and I end up looking like we have the plague, while DH and DD are completely untouched.

Have you given her any antihistamine?

Yeah, looks like pox. It is pox season too. My DD has it currently.

When people mention antihistamine like piriton? She’s 6 in August so I could give her half a tablet? Or a special kids one?

At the moment I'd say bites, but you'll know when they spread.

You tend to notice one or two, then a few hours later there'll be twenty.

I wouldn't say hives. Mine tended to be irregular lumpy red blotches.

Do you have pets?

Could it be fieas? (Voice if experience 🙄)

Piriton. Check with pharmacist for the dose. You can ring and ask.

It comes in syrup form for kids.

Yes - piriton syrup.

I do have a dog but he’s in the clear. Plus he sleeps on my bed so I’d be covered too if it was fleas.

Can I just say a huge thank you to everyone for responding. It’s not always easy being a mom and figuring this stuff out!

As others have already said, you wouldn’t necessarily be covered even if he does sleep on your bed. Some people react to bites, others do not.
