Help. Urgent. Is this chickenpox or just hives?

5 year old DD was complaining of being itchy last night. DH did pyjamas and said it was hives (he suffered a lot as a child). This morning she has loads and I’m wondering if it’s chickenpox. Oldest child so no experience of this!!

To be they look like bite but that would be an awful lot of bites on her back.

It could be chicken pox though, it doesn't really look like hives to me, hives are normal more blotchy

NeverPutAWetFootInABirkenstock · 16/05/2019 09:35

Definitely not hives, I had hives last summer as a reaction to sun cream and it looked very different, a large patch (about 8 inches by 6 inches) of bumpy blotchy skin. The surface was smooth though, not blistery/spotty like these ones.

My money is on The Pox.

I am also saying the pox.

Both my sons had a mild case so no clusters just individual spots, but red lump with little blister in the middle that got bigger. They come up quite quick. So the second pic looks like classic chicken pox to me.

Ds1 gets hives in response to stuff he gets, so he had slapped cheek and hives. Hives on him come up like nettle stings (white lumps) or red rash but not individual ones like your daughter.

Can I also say your DD has the most gorgeous hair colour. Smile

It’s chicken pox! The little red rash around each spot is exactly like my dd’s.

Don't give her anything containing ibuprofen. If it is pox, it'll make it worse.

Chicken pox. My daughter has it x

BambooB · 16/05/2019 11:24

Similar to yours x

It’s slightly confusing as well that DD is completely and utterly normal (apart from saying she’s itchy!)

My DD recently had CP and wasn’t unwell, but the more spots that came out the more uncomfortable she was. Not all were itchy either, just a few.

DesparateDino · 16/05/2019 13:01

Looks like textbook chicken pox to me. My two never seemed ill at the start, only a couple of days in when they were completely covered.

Hope she gets well soon.

Persimmonn · 16/05/2019 13:02

That’s chicken pox. You don’t necessarily get ill with fever and lay down with CP. My younder 2 got them last year and they were well in themselves, but just itchy for a day or two.

Drinkandknowthings · 17/05/2019 08:41

So I think this is definitely the pox? It’s just these few spots though (along with a few more on her face)

Any black scabs?
Have they cropped up at different times, any extras from the first crop?

That's either a very mild dose, or not CP.

EileenAlanna · 17/05/2019 10:23

It probably is CP. I came across a good tip for easing the itchiness - use Head & Shoulders in her bath instead of your normal bubble bath. It seems the active ingredients that tackle dandruff work wonders with CP too.

Drinkandknowthings · 17/05/2019 11:37

There are black scabs. This is her face.

Mine had barely any spots with chicken pox, wasn't itchy and wasn't unwell in himself at all. It's the right time of year for pox as well.

ReganSomerset · 17/05/2019 13:01

I'd say a mild dose of chickenpox, OP. Looks like my Dd's face, except DD has more spots on her face than yours has in total, by the looks of it!

MidnightMystery · 17/05/2019 13:23

CP

definitelyshouldknowbetter · 17/05/2019 14:41

My youngest had the pox a few weeks ago, really quite mild and max 20 spots on his body, it didn’t really bother him and he wasn’t unwell with it. When my eldest had it he was so poorly and absolutely covered

Emmabryant123 · 17/05/2019 15:59

I think that looks like a mild case of the pox
