Wireless (?) printing without a PC - is it possible?

FawnDrench · 14/05/2019 18:34

Does such a device exist and what is it called please?
All the printers I've looked at online seem to talk about installing drivers and Ethernet cables and usb or whatever, and take for granted you will have a PC to start off with, as well as having the wi-fi print options. I just want the latter though!

I have a phone and iPad and want to be able to print just using my home wi-fi - is there any way I can buy something that doesn't cost hundreds of pounds to do this?

I do not have a PC.

What advice can some of you knowledgeable people provide to help me please.

I am not totally non-geek and can understand the basics but am not particularly IT-savvy...

Thanks in anticipation for any help.

I would also like to know.

I have a Hewlett Packard WiFi printer which I can use with my phone, iPad, laptop. Cost about £30 from Argos. Scans, prints well.

This one

You just need a WiFi printer most are now, and not expensive. I’ve got a HP envy and it does the jobs you’re looking for, it was around £40.

iklboo · 14/05/2019 18:40

YY to HP - we can print from phones and tablets. You just install the app and off you go.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 14/05/2019 18:40

You need something that works with cloud print (which is most printers)

iloveredwine · 14/05/2019 18:41

canon too. I have a pixima and print from phone or ipad/ samsung tab

Optimist1 · 14/05/2019 18:41

Another HP wireless printer owner here - I mostly use it from my PC, but it works a treat from my phone (or the phone of anyone connected to my wifi network). Very simple to set up.

Pixilicious · 14/05/2019 18:42

For iPads etc you need one with AirPrint

Wolfcubisthefemalenominal · 14/05/2019 18:43

I have a Hewlett Packard it was about £30 from Tesco. I print off my phone and kindle no pc. You may need an app but it works perfectly

SouthwarkSkaters · 14/05/2019 18:45

I have a canon pixma, I can print straight from my iPad and phone. It’s about 10 years old, so I assume they don’t sell it anymore but also that most will work this way these days.

No you don’t. Mine has the option of both AirPrint and normal.

runoutofnamechanges · 14/05/2019 18:49

Yes, you can print to a wireless printer from your phone or tablet. I bought a cheap (£30ish) HP 3 in 1 (printer/scanner/copier) for my mum that she can print to from her iphone/tablet using Apple Airprint or the HP app. It also has a subscription for ink so that she is automatically sent ink before it runs out (the printer sends a message when the ink gets low). You can chose the level of subscription you want depending on how much you print. I think it's free if you only do a few pages a month. I have a Canon Pixma that does the same. I would imagine most wireless printers can.

SouthwarkSkaters · 14/05/2019 18:49

Mine is too old to have AirPrint. I use canon’s app.

This.

I have this one www.epson.co.uk/products/printers/inkjet-printers/for-home/expression-home-xp-322 and it works well

Lonecatwithkitten · 14/05/2019 18:52

No need for AirPrint I just export from iPad or iPhone to printer it finds my hp printer and works fine.

LackBladder · 14/05/2019 18:53

I have the app, but never use it. It’s as simple as choosing print or AirPrint and that’s it. I also have the instant ink thing, saves a fortune.

Bisset · 14/05/2019 18:53

No you don’t. Mine has the option of both AirPrint and normal.

Your what has the option of AirPrint and normal?

You need AirPrint (or another app), but AirPrint is guaranteed to work, other apps aren’t.

Bisset · 14/05/2019 18:56

Interesting...

So, what buttons do you press to print, say a photo?

LackBladder · 14/05/2019 18:58

Two options: print or AirPrint. Both work, never use app.

The button with the arrow pointing to the left, print.

theworldistoosmall · 14/05/2019 19:04

I have a Brother 3 in 1. Print all the time from the iphone/ipad. I can either do it like a pp has posted with the pictures or the printers app.

FawnDrench · 14/05/2019 19:09

Wow - thanks so much for all the very helpful responses!

I am off to explore all your suggestions and advice on which printer to get, and I'm so pleased my problem seems to be solvable at long last.

You are right - I need to work on my reading comprehension Blush

AFAIK printers generally support both AirPrint and CloudPrint, but there is a list of AirPrint printers here:

Bisset · 14/05/2019 19:37

lack*

So, AirPrint (left), or app (right)
