How many houseplants do you have?

I have none at all, unless you include a sad looking basil plant on my kitchen window sill.

I do love plants but our bastarding dog has eaten/destroyed every one over the years and I worry that if I get more he'll do the same or even poison himself with one.

So tell me about your lovely plants.

Over 50. House plants are my weakness.
Could you get some trailing plants to keep them away from the dog?
Tradescatia zebrina is fast growing with a lovely colour.
Spider plants look lovely hanging.
Chain of hearts is pretty and very easy to grow.
I could go on...

froufroufoxes · 12/05/2019 20:14

I meant, hanging as well as trailing.
Pinterest has good ideas for pet safe plants. X

Bubblysqueak · 12/05/2019 20:16

8
2 orchids
2 peace lily's
2 aloe Vera
1 large palm
1 unknown thing that won't stop growing

Up until a year ago I had none. I'm amazed they are still alive.

forestafantastica · 12/05/2019 20:17

3 big pot plants, 2 bonsai trees and then a load in my herb garden in a box at the kitchen.

Mumble29 · 12/05/2019 20:17

9, and amazingly they are all still alive (a couple I've had for over a year) I don't usually have a very good track record lol unfortunately I can't seem to keep outdoor plants alive for very long though

GetRid · 12/05/2019 20:21

9 or 10

They cleanse the air by capturing pollutants.

A lot of mine are a bit ill tho cos of the central heating

Andonandonan · 12/05/2019 20:21

I have gone from never being able to keep a plant alive to now having a thriving assortment of house plants. Turns out the secret is giving them the right amount of water.

I have quite a few succulents which are pretty impossible to kill, along with some cacti. An orchid which was a gift from a friend and a beautiful trailing thingy which my mum grew from one she had and is just spectacular. I need to split it and grow more.

I know nothing at all technical about gardening and really wasn’t interested a few years ago but enjoy it more and more. And love having plants around the house, they do make it feel more homely I think.

cannotmakemymindup · 12/05/2019 20:23

2 orchids the oldest of which is over three years, a chilli plant that looks like bonsai and doesn't grow any chillis but I like it's tenacity.

FreeButtonBee · 12/05/2019 20:23

About 8!
Massive aloe Vera
String of pearls succulent
Couple of spider plants (live them for the retro value)
Orchid (which I hate by was a gift)
Fern in the bathroom
A spiked thing which was a gift
A few other succulents

I want some big ones for the floor but kids still to crazy for that so will be a few more years!

TreadingThePrimrosePath · 12/05/2019 20:27

Lots, probably more than 20. In addition to many of those mentioned, I have a passion flower in a north-facing window that drapes like a curtain.
I’ve got a mixture of hanging/trailing, on windowsills and some in large pots on the floor. My family tolerate my need for houseplants and a garden, but they aren’t interested!

missmouse101 · 12/05/2019 20:30

None at all. I cannot stand having pots of mud around the house.

BrokenWing · 12/05/2019 20:32

6 neglected small cactus in small pots on kitchen window sill.

One neglected succulent in bathroom.

TheRedBarrows · 12/05/2019 20:32

None.
It seems weird to me to have plants indoors, I think they are outdoor beings.

6utter6ean · 12/05/2019 20:34

Have really got into them in the last couple of months.
Watch Planterina on YouTube for advice.

Horses4 · 12/05/2019 20:35

None, but I am eyeing up the Little Botanicals New Home collection on the John Lewis website. Feel the need for greenery.

Itsagrandoldteam · 12/05/2019 20:36

I've got 3 orchids, MIL bought them all. I really don't like house plants, except a poinsettia at Christmas. I'm useless at watering them but they are all still alive. The oldest one is starting to freak me out though, it's roots have all grown over the side of the pot, and it's creepy.

HardAsSnails · 12/05/2019 20:40

I've got 2 Christmas cactuses, a money plant and an aspidistra (aka cast iron plant).

LoafofSellotape · 12/05/2019 20:41

14

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 12/05/2019 20:41

An Easter cactus and a Christmas cactus, both of which flower from November to April. An orchid which is dormant at the moment and I hope will flower again. A plant which was part of a pot I had for Mother’s Day a couple of years ago.

Samanabanana · 12/05/2019 20:43

35 (I think? Maybe more) and it's not enough Grin

TreadingThePrimrosePath · 12/05/2019 20:44

Agreed! I like living in a garden.

Justlikedevon · 12/05/2019 20:48
  1. Would be more but the cat systematically destroys them all.
Livedandlearned · 12/05/2019 20:53

Loads. I have two in my bathroom that have been with me for about 15 years. They are still going strong and I love having them.

Reluctant2ndtimer · 12/05/2019 20:55

I’ve got about 10 now and I love them Smile
I’m going retro in my 70s bungalow so I’ve been making macrame plant hangers which I’ve got some trailing plants and a fern in and a gorgeous cheese plant on the floor. If you’ve got anywhere to hang a plant from you can get macrame plant hangers on eBay or Etsy for only a few quid and your plants would be safe from the kids and pets then. I’ve just put most of mine up together but they’ll go in other rooms once we’ve decorated.

mimibunz · 12/05/2019 20:55

None. I actually don’t like house plants but I love fresh flowers.
