Anyone recommend a dance movie suitable for a 12 y.o?

She wanted to watch Footloose but common sense media reviews have put me off.
Not sure if Flashdance is better?

Anything more recent?
She loves modern freestyle type dance and pop music.

TIA

I seem to remember Girls Just Wanna Have Fun was pretty preteen friendly. Brilliant too!!

moreismore · 11/05/2019 19:09

Yes to save the last dance!

2dogsand1baby · 11/05/2019 19:10

Save the last dance! ♥️

I loved bring it on aswell but more cheerleading I don't remember if it was a bit oldish tho?

TooTrueToBeGood · 11/05/2019 19:12

Grease.

peachgreen · 11/05/2019 19:15

The High School Musicals are all kid friendly.

Thatsnotmyotter · 11/05/2019 19:15

Honey? I seem to remember watching it in year 7 or 8 PE when we couldn’t Go outside for some reason so i’m Pretty sure it’s age appropriate. Also Bring it On... on reflection maybe we just had really lazy PE teachers?

The Step Up movies are very tame IIRC.

Thatsnotmyotter · 11/05/2019 19:16

Actually I just read the plot to Honey... I think I take that back 😂

Hairspray

I was watching Dirty Dancing when I was younger than 12, but you might not be comfortable with the sex / abortion bits?

RTBAdmin · 11/05/2019 19:23

Have you got netflix? There are quite a few on there on children's profile but all of their names escape me. My daughter is forever watching those and gymnastic films.

LuxuryWoman2018 · 11/05/2019 19:31

Street dance? All stars is good too.

Comefromaway · 11/05/2019 19:42

Hairspray

It’s been a while since I saw the film version of Footloose but the music is great.

Dare I say Greatest Shownan (yes it’s cheesy but they have an ensemble of Broadway dancers who are great)

Billy Elliot if you don’t mind swearing (though from what I recall there’s not that much actual proper dance in the film but they show the stage show recording every so often on sky arts or it’s on DVD.

There are some great dance scenes in West Side Story.

pepperpot99 · 11/05/2019 19:47

Strictly ballroom is the best dance film ever.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 11/05/2019 19:51

My teenage girls (15 and 18) have an enduring love affair with Dance Academy (Netflix - tv series and a film). If you’ve ever read Veronica at the Wells, you’ll recognise it - apart from being modern and with Australian accents.

Not a dance movie, but along the same lines, they love Fast Girls. Their favourite response to a great many situations is ‘You’ve got Primark written all over you.” (Has to be said in a broad estuary accent).

tadpole39 · 11/05/2019 19:51

Another vote for strictly ballroom, love it!

Hatemadeupwords · 11/05/2019 19:55

What's wrong with footloose?

Hatemadeupwords · 11/05/2019 19:59

Just read the common sense media and it must have been written by puritans. 12 is senior school, they talk about far worsem

Papergirl1968 · 11/05/2019 20:35

The Next Step - series not a movie though.
Gym Stars on bbc Iplayer - again a series.
Fame - I think there was a movie out a couple of years ago.
If you search dance movie on Amazon, it brings a few up.
