Seeking 'middle class' communities/market towns in Midlands/north

Hi. We are desperate to move to a nice community in the north or north Midlands. Probably a market town as we're sick of the city and probably not ready for a village. We want somewhere that feels safe and friendly which is the opposite of what we have now. We'd need good schools. Can anyone suggest anywhere so that I can start my research. We really want to get out of where we are. Thank you.

Budget for a detached property of £250k max which is the problem!

Northumberland. Morpeth, Amble, Gosforth, Alnwick, Ponteland to name a few. Lots of non- Persimmon 3/4 bed new builds in your budget, and if you look carefully many considerably below that.

KenAdams · 10/05/2019 21:51

I was going to suggest Market Harborough but your budget would be a problem, as for most middle class areas around the Midlands so you'd either need to compromise a bit on the "middle classness" or up your budget.

randomsabreuse · 10/05/2019 21:56

Bridgnorth but would be stretching to get a detached. Possibly less fashionable bits of Shropshire might work...

MrsPnut · 10/05/2019 21:58

Stamford would meet your brief.

Bumbalaya · 10/05/2019 21:58

Market Harborough would be perfect for you, it’s gorgeous and lovely shops, restaurants, parks and social scene.

countdowntonap · 10/05/2019 22:00

2 bed? 4 bed? You need to be more specific about your requirements. Depending on what you think ‘middle class’ is, you’re unlikely to get it for £250000

chamenanged · 10/05/2019 22:54

Chesterfield? I think you'd get a nice house there for £250k. Not sure exactly how nice nor if it would be detached. I suspect you are asking an awful lot for your £250k these days if you want a detached house, good schools and a 'middle class community'. Why does it have to be detached out of interest?

MrsBungle · 10/05/2019 22:55

Bingham in Nottinghamshire.

ginandtonicformeplease · 10/05/2019 22:57

Oakham or Stamford

CannyLad · 10/05/2019 23:00

250k for a detached house in Gosforth? Hahaha. Can you buy a detached house for that in any naice area really?

whiteroseredrose · 10/05/2019 23:01

Knowle near Solihull is nice in the Midlands but I don't know much about house prices.

Brownowlahi · 10/05/2019 23:02

Is Staffordshire far enough north for you

twirlypoo · 10/05/2019 23:03

Hexham, corbridge, tynemouth

LucilleBluth · 10/05/2019 23:03

Grantham, Sleaford, Newark. ?

twirlypoo · 10/05/2019 23:03

Oh, I’ve just seen you want detached - scratch everything off my list unless you go more rural!

Chosennone · 10/05/2019 23:04

Chapel-en-le frith / New Mills or Buxton. Peak district

PickAChew · 10/05/2019 23:04

Agree, there's not many places that you'll get everything you're asking for for £250K. If you want that sort of neighbourhood, you'd be looking at traditional semis or new build town houses. You can get a nice detached house for that in the North or midlands but not necessarily in a "middle class" area of a small town with good secondary schools

Rightoutofhere · 10/05/2019 23:05

250k is mint particularly realistic for a detached house in stamford sadly. Not sure about Oakham prices! Do they both count as ‘north midlands’ though?

teyem · 10/05/2019 23:06

How many bedrooms?

ClariceBeansUncle · 10/05/2019 23:06

Hexham. Lovely town, great schools

twirlypoo · 10/05/2019 23:06

Clarice would you get a detached for £250k there though?!

JaniceBattersby · 10/05/2019 23:08

You might just be able to squeeze a detached house for that price in Oakham or Uppingham if you can find a keen seller willing to move on price. Both lovely towns with the middle-class, countryside feel I presume you’re after.

jessicawessica · 10/05/2019 23:09

Ashbourne
Duffield
Bakewell
Buxton
Repton
All achievable on £250,000 if you're not looking for a mansion.

Awks · 10/05/2019 23:11

Malton is lovely. Good schools, nice people, half hour from York. Nearly on your budget 😂

JaniceBattersby · 10/05/2019 23:12

Penwortham
St Anne’s
Villages in East Lancs
Around Horsforth (on a lucky day with your budget)
