House phone?

Do you still have a house phone? We are moving at the end of the month and i want to keep costs down until we adapt to new mortgage payments, trying to convince my dh that we don't need one, he insists we do, but i couldn't tell you the last time our house phone rang! Is it still a thing?

I have one as I need a bt line for internet. But I don’t use it.

JockTamsonsBairns · 08/05/2019 23:21

We're in the exact same situation, moving house next month, and I'd love to get rid of the house phone. No-one ever uses it, and it seems crazy to fork out for it. DH says that you can't get broadband without a landline though - not sure if that's true or not?

Bumpdebump · 08/05/2019 23:27

Haven't had one in around 14 years.

RainbowMum11 · 08/05/2019 23:30

Have one but only for the fibre optic broadband.

CheekyFuckersDontGetPastMe · 08/05/2019 23:32

Have one for BT nternet but never ever use it

Curiousmum69 · 08/05/2019 23:32

I technically have one and pay for it. But I don't think I plugged it in since rearranging the furniture about 2 years ago.

I only have it as it comes with the broadband.

EdHelpPls · 08/05/2019 23:33

Only have ours for broadband too. Have never had an actual landline phone since moving away from home.

DaisysStew · 08/05/2019 23:34

Only for the internet. I do have an actual phone somewhere I’ve just never bothered to plug it in.

DramaAlpaca · 08/05/2019 23:35

We still have one, mainly because I live in a different country to my elderly parents & that's the method of contact they find easiest.

heatherblue · 08/05/2019 23:39

We've got one, it came with the broadband package. It's been used a few times. It's the one I call by default if I need to speak to DH while I'm out and about because his mobile is never charged or anywhere near him.

TheRealHousewifeofCheshire · 08/05/2019 23:51

We do. The only person who rings it is mother in law. I invariably dont answer it and regularly clear 35 missed calls a week

SrSteveOskowski · 09/05/2019 00:06

Another 'just for internet' here.
Rarely ring anyone from it and the only people who ever ring it are scammers and MIL, so needless to say I never answer it. Although the scammers are probably less of a pain in the arse than MIL .....

Nat6999 · 09/05/2019 00:10

I haven't had a landline for about 7 years now, I couldn't see the point of paying for a phone line when I was paying for a mobile. We have a phone point but just use it for broadband.

floraloctopus · 09/05/2019 00:13

Yes and it has a phone plugged in so we can find our mobiles in case of fire

babyworry2018 · 09/05/2019 01:25

I have one and I've used it to call 999 twice, I wouldn't want to trust finding a mobile/it being fully charged in either situation I rang (one was hearing someone break into our house and start to come upstairs when we were in bed, the other was being unable to rouse our newborn. ) In both cases the call operator stayed on the line, in both I would have had a low battery/struggled to find mobile in bed without a landline and was basically incoherent with fear so wouldn't have been best placed to be messing about with charging cables.

BasiliskStare · 09/05/2019 01:56

If by house phone you mean landline - we don't have one - don't miss it

BossyPurples · 09/05/2019 02:28

Have like I'm for internet but no phone plugged in.

Was just on about landlines to dh today after reading a thread on here about poverty and someone say if people can afford smartphones they shouldn't need food banks and it's about priorities.

There's only My Mam in her 60s who still uses a landline that I know in real life and even she is increasingly using her iPhone (dds old one) more and more. I'm 40 and none of my friends or family my age use a landline for anything other than internet and don't have phones plugged in:

happymummy12345 · 09/05/2019 02:34

We have one for the sky broadband. We use it occasionally

FlyingMonkeys · 09/05/2019 02:34

I don't have one. We've got internet via talk talk. They installed a point upstairs for the box but we didn't have a phone land line and don't get charged for one.

Alicewond · 09/05/2019 02:35

I have one as everyone has said for the internet connection. But also because it’s the only way I speak to my dad and my partner to his dad. The small amount of obey is worth this

Purpleartichoke · 09/05/2019 02:36

We haven’t had a landline for 15 years. Current house is networked with ports in every room, but has no phone lines in the walls.

LiteralNotMedical · 09/05/2019 05:48

We do. But our DC are too young for mobiles, so I refused to get rid in case they need to call us or emergency.

bellinisurge · 09/05/2019 05:56

Yep. Use it several times a week.

cortex10 · 09/05/2019 06:39

Still have one but rarely rings - quote it when filling in online forms that insist on a contact number where I don't want to give my mobile.

Vinorosso74 · 09/05/2019 07:02

We do. I don't want it if we can save money but the Virgin Media stuff is all in DP's name.
The person who calls it most is FIL and often at really bad times ie. 8am on a Saturday.
