House phone?

Do you still have a house phone? We are moving at the end of the month and i want to keep costs down until we adapt to new mortgage payments, trying to convince my dh that we don't need one, he insists we do, but i couldn't tell you the last time our house phone rang! Is it still a thing?

yes as we have no mobile signal. But use voip lines instead of the BT line

UnPocoLoco2 · 09/05/2019 07:17

We have a phone line but only for the internet. We had a bt house phone about 9 years ago but we never used it. It was permanently on silent because we got constant junk calls from bt!

REDCARBLUE · 09/05/2019 07:17

I have one and i need it. Voda signal is sometimes hit and miss so the kids will call home before mobile if they are teadybto be picked up or something

TowerRingInferno · 09/05/2019 07:18

Just for the internet and to receive calls from my parents who refuse to call a mobile number. We don’t make calls as we’re charged a fortune if we do.

CherryPavlova · 09/05/2019 07:20

Yes. We have no mobile reception here. I think we’d have one anyway.

Damntheman · 09/05/2019 07:24

I haven't had one for twelve years because they're just not the done thing in Norway. But I really want one. It'd be reassuring to know I could get hold of DH if he has left his phone around somewhere silly (again) or know that my 5 year old could call for help if he needed to without needing to figure out my mobile.

Iwantacampervan · 09/05/2019 07:32

I have a landline as the mobile signal in the village is awful.

stucknoue · 09/05/2019 07:49

I do because it's for the internet and costs nothing in the evenings and weekends

bellinisurge · 09/05/2019 07:50

I also have two rotary dial phones- one for us, one for in-laws. Just in case. I'm a prepper so that's the kind of thing I do. Fully aware of potential flaws with that.

RottnestFerry · 09/05/2019 07:51

We have one. It doesn't cost anything extra because we have the connection for the internet anyway.

I'm one of those annoying people who never knows where their mobile is and, if I do, the battery is probably flat, so a landline phone makes it easier for people to contact me.

As somebody else said, it's also very useful in those situations where a phone number is required and we don't want to give out our mobile numbers. It has an extremely effective call screening system so we get zero junk calls.

icelollycraving · 09/05/2019 07:54

We have one because of broadband but it hasn’t been plugged in for about 4 years. We had so many unwanted sales calls, although we did that thing that supposedly stops them. It would start ringing as I was putting Ds to bed, it pissed dh off.
Just use mobiles now.

CarrieBlu · 09/05/2019 07:57

We have landline phones upstairs and downstairs. We have to have the line anyway for the broadband, but I like having them in case of an emergency. I am absolutely rubbish at charging my mobile phone (or knowing where it is) and would hate to be stuck unable to make an urgent call if I needed to! No one ever rings us on it though, we never hand out the number to anyone. I don’t even know what it is!

Kittykatmacbill · 09/05/2019 08:43

No. Another for internet only. It was only the in-laws that ever called it.

Pinotjo · 09/05/2019 08:49

After one too many "I'm ringing about your accident" phone calls I unplugged the house phone and dropped it in the dustbin, not missed it, anyone that matter has my mobile number

ShatnersWig · 09/05/2019 08:54

Yep, still have one. I suspect most of us have had times when the network is down on our mobiles, or we've stupidly let the battery run down, or we've lost our mobile, or it's fallen in the loo (I still don't get that). I'll still use my landline in preference to my mobile at home because it's more smaller to hold and doesn't have a case cover flapping around like using my mobile. It's often a clearer line, too.

x2boys · 09/05/2019 08:55

I have one ,the only people who phone me are my parents, kids schools(occasionally) .

DontCallMeShitley · 09/05/2019 09:12

We have one, use it for broadband. The phone is plugged in but ring tone is off due to junk calls. I use it sometimes when my mobile battery is dead or to check it is still working.

crankyhousewife · 09/05/2019 09:18

We had to get one when we moved to a village last year as we get no signal on our mobiles.

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone · 09/05/2019 09:22

No. I paid for a line with no phone for years, but we switched to Vodafone internet and they said it wasn't necessary 🤷‍♀️

Olbaa · 09/05/2019 09:25

We have a line but it hasn't had a phone plugged into it in years. We just use our mobiles.

Reallybadidea · 09/05/2019 09:27

Voda signal is sometimes hit and miss so the kids will call home before mobile if they are teadybto be picked up or something

Vodafone supports WiFi calling if your phone is compatible, then you just have your calls automatically routed through your WiFi if there's no signal.

mejon · 09/05/2019 10:07

We do as we're very rural and do get the occasional power cut which means the broadband won't work and we've got very poor or non-existent mobile signal. I've only recently got wifi-calling on my phone so before then could only use the landline to make calls at home.

RedElephants · 09/05/2019 10:17

We have one, parents call me on it, as does mother in law and occasionally my sister.
I use it occasionally simply because the mobile signal can be rubbish at times.

Redyoyo · 09/05/2019 14:56

Hmmm i think we will just get one, now i think about it i would never be able to find my mobile without it. And the post about emergencies is a good shout.

This is giving me the heebie jeebies. I'm home alone (with dog) reading these with a coffee and the doorbell just rang unexpectedly and I nearly jumped out of my skin. Not expecting anyone and due to this thread didn't answer it Shock
