Women who don’t wear makeup, what do you honestly think about women who do?

I wear makeup every day apart from rare days when I’m not going to be leaving the house at all. In my line of work, it’s more common for women not to wear makeup than to wear it, and I often wonder what those women who don’t wear it think of me. (I have almost zero interest in what men think about women’s choices of makeup, dress etc.)

When I see women not wearing makeup, I occasionally think, “Gosh, she looks a bit tired”, or “Her skin looks a bit sore”, but my overwhelming thought is either nothing whatsoever, or vague jealousy at women who can put their public “work” selves on without feeling the need to wear makeup.

I don’t wear super-heavy makeup, but you’d definitely know I was wearing it: I like a 50s style with winged eyeliner etc., and sometimes bright lipstick. It’s part of my “look”, and I feel a bit naked without it.

That said, I do realise it’s not unproblematic that I feel unfinished without it on. It bothers me that I know I objectively look better with it (because if I ever don’t wear my signature eyeliner, for example, people always ask if I’m feeling ill). It bothers me that men are allowed to look as shit and haggard as they like and nobody suggests they should pretty themselves up, yet women who look shit and haggard often become objects of pity.

If you’re a woman who never or rarely wears makeup, what do you think of women who always do? My assumption is that you either don’t care, or that you probably feel a bit sorry for us for having to put “war paint” on to face the world. Or maybe you feel like women who wear makeup are a bit superficial.

But am I wrong? Do you actually feel intimidated, or suspect makeup wearers are judging you for not wearing it? Or something else entirely?

(I know this sounds a bit like stuff a journo would ask, but I promise I’m not the Daily Mail and am just curious in my own right.)

I’m amazed at the number of women who won’t answer the door without their ‘face’ on and do feel a bit sorry for them that they feel that way about themselves, especially as most have natural beauty without it. I feel utter sympathy towards women who wear make up to cover scars, birthmarks or acne/it’s after effects as there can be a lot of staring and judgement in the community.

My daily beauty regime (if I bother), is soap and water. I’ve been married twice now and didn’t wear make up for either wedding - second husband has never seen me in make up. As I have no interest in it I have no idea of how to apply make up and don’t own any. Don’t get me wrong, I’m no beauty, I’m bog standard with fairly even skin tone and normal skin type I just can’t be bothered with it.

Oh! Sorry.

Grin Sorry. I was trying to be ironic or something & I don’t think it caught.

I very rarely wear make up these days as I just can't be bothered, however I do like it and I think I look more attractive wearing it.

My (varied and conflicting) thoughts on people who wear make up all the time:

  1. It's not really my place to care or judge and I generally don't... However, when it does cross my mind:
  2. I wonder where people find the time/energy for their routine
  3. I think some people might be low in confidence to have to wear make up all the time
  4. I think some people are superficial (but that comes down to more than just wearing make up... it's a feeling of a 'veneer')
  5. I think some people judge me for wearing no make up
  6. I admire particular looks, whether 'natural' or a 'statement'. Make up done well/to suit someone (whether looks or personality) is an art.

*Every man I’ve ever had a discussion about me/women wearing make up has preferred no make up or as natural as possible make up.

Yes same here.*

Ditto!

I've met very few men who have said they prefer women to wear make up. Those who say they like it generally prefer make up to accentuate natural features (rather than appear artificial).

EvelynShaw · 12/05/2019 22:31

Actually, it brings up conflicting emotions in me. I don’t really wear make up, just on the odd occasion. Women who wear make up, on the one hand I envy them because they have the time, patience and discipline to make the effort. On the other hand, my feminist self feels as though it’s panderibg to male ideals of beauty. And then I’m cross with myself for envying them in the first place. I’m basically very confused.

CocoDeMoll · 12/05/2019 22:35

I’m jealous of women that can wear makeup. My skin is super sensitive so it’s a graft for me to wear it.

Isitmybathtimeyet · 12/05/2019 22:43

Lots of men who say they prefer women without make up just don’t realise when they’re looking at a made up face IMO.

I don’t think it is. Especially these days when make up generally isn’t subtle with contouring, false eyelashes, hd brows etc. You’d need to be pretty thick to think that is natural.

Men I have spoken to say they don’t like the feel of make up when getting intimate.

I don’t like the feel of it in my skin, so I can see where they’re coming from. I also don’t like the smell if make up.

Thatsalovelycuppatea · 12/05/2019 23:08

I can't understand, how some find the time to do their full make up and start work at 9. They've done a full face including blended eyeshadow and perfect eyeliner. They must get up at 5am!!!!
I like to wear make up even if I walk my dog. People say I don't need it, but I feel it helps my confidence.

YesQueen · 13/05/2019 00:21

@Thatsalovelycuppatea takes me about 15-20 mins to do makeup for work including eyeshadow/liner etc. I start work at 8 and get up about 5.50-6am

Isitmybathtimeyet · 13/05/2019 08:21

I don’t wear make up much myself so I’m not being defensive when I say that men don’t recognise it. But I’ve seen plenty of conversations when the examples given of famous women who ‘don’t wear make up’ are women who absolutely wear make up, just not full on stuff. I’ve even seen photos in the press of X going ‘make up free’ when they’re clearly wearing make up! I think some men genuinely don’t get what totally non made up looks like.

Davespecifico · 13/05/2019 08:27

I’m nearly 50 and do full make up every day now. I feel a lot better for it.
That said, I barely notice other faces so I imagine they would barely notice mine.

Meh. Men can have opinions about their own faces.

This 100%

BiBabbles · 13/05/2019 11:40

I don't wear make-up and I can't really think of having any sort of opinion of adults who do. When my DD (12) wears make-up, I do get the feeling she's mainly doing it to fit in with her friends as she seems to have little interest in it except when she spends a lot of time with them outside of school. When her younger siblings do so (9 & 7), they do it for fun or for a laugh.

I haven't the slightest idea about make-up - only used stage make-up as a kid and hated it and only own chapsticks for when I get a cold. Sometimes the artsy ones seem interesting and I can see why some enjoy that, but some of the logistics seem a faff and there is so much information out there, much of it contradictory. Like foundation with SPF when general advice is sun protection needs to be applied regularly throughout the day and some may not be getting the protection they think they are and I read recently, can't remember where, about SPF make-up setting sprays and a company making a brush for applying a mineral SPF product over make-up without smearing it and other similar things and it just seemed either like they were just trying to sell more stuff or at least that there was enough confusion over this and other issues that companies are using for their advantage much like any other one.

GarlicGrace · 13/05/2019 20:20

Bertie - Not per day! Per contents of makeup bag, which could last anything from a month to decades Blush depending on how much you use it.

I'm not suggesting anyone who doesn't know about makeup must be male, obviously. I am a bit flummoxed as to how any young woman gets to fully-fledged adulthood without being touched by any of the media, role modelling and retail promotions aimed at saturating her with the message that she's as ugly as fuck and had better start applying face paint pdq.

dairymilkmonster · 13/05/2019 20:38

I am crap at makeup and on the odd occasion i wear it, it usually looks awful.

Tasteful, subtle makeup -- like that all the middle class professional or yummy mummies at our school have mastered, often enhances their appearance.

Loads of foundation, slug eyebrows, really obvious lipstick etc just looks awful. I tend to assume the person in question is 'hiding' the real self behind a wall. There are a variety of psychological explanations for this.

disclaimer: I am a psychiatrist. One that is rubbish at my own appearance and take a 'here i am, like it or lump it' approach.

80sMum · 13/05/2019 20:45

If I wear makeup, I look like a drag queen! It's best that I steer well clear of it!

But on some women it looks very nice. I think it's probably best for to use less of it as you get older. Not many people want to go for the Barbara Cartland look, I think!

As for winged eyeliner, I am in awe of anyone who can do it!

Disfordarkchocolate · 13/05/2019 20:48

I don't notice a lot of the time. Sometimes I think that looks nice because it's a look I think would suit me. Sometimes I think how do you find time to do all that because it looks like so much work and I'd rather be in bed. I worry more that people judge my bare face.

Geraniumpink · 13/05/2019 20:51

I don’t wear make up, except for the odd special occasion. I work in an environment where nearly all the women wear quite a lot and talk about Botox and nails etc. I’ve never given it much thought until recently - it’s other people who have to look at me, I don't have to look at myself. And how much are they going to care how I look? Some women wear it very heavy and just looks a bit odd and for some it is seemingly just part of how they enjoy presenting themselves to the world.
