Why are Andrews daughters princesses, by Edwards are not?

BBC posted this pic of the royal family tree. How come Eugine and Beatrice are Princesses but their cousins of same generation are Lady and Viscount?

I believe the queen can bestow HRH titles if requested so it’s prob because he asked

ScreamingValenta · 06/05/2019 19:41

Because Edward and Sophie chose not to style them as princesses. It's similar to Meghan being known as the Duchess of Sussex rather than Princess Harry.

EdWinchester · 06/05/2019 19:41

Parental choice, I'd guess.

And Edward less of a twat than Andrew?

Choice by Edward and Sophie. It’s further down in the BBC article - “The couple decided to give their children "courtesy" titles as sons or daughters of an Earl, rather than the style prince or princess. It is thought this decision was made to avoid some of the burdens of royal titles.”

Aragog · 06/05/2019 19:41

I think technically they are prince and princess, but their parents chose to use the titles styled to Earls instead.

Most of the royals have more than one title available to them. Guess, some of them get to choose which ones they prefer to use.

TeenTimesTwo · 06/05/2019 19:41

I think it's because Edward very sensibly declined their being princesses. In the same way that Anne & mark declined a title for him and their offspring.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 06/05/2019 19:41

They are entitled to them but Edward and Sophie choose not to use them for their children.

Skiptheskip · 06/05/2019 19:42

Because Edward requested a lesser title unlike grabby air-miles-Andy.

hidinginthenightgarden · 06/05/2019 19:42

Ah that’s quite good then. Glad it isn’t a discriminatory thing that some are more important than others.

Anne's children didn't get titles as she's not the son of a monarch afaik.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 06/05/2019 19:44

They are technically HRH Princess Louise and HRH Prince James (According to letters patent 1917) but Charles wanted to slim down the RF so Edward and Sophie decided to use / accept lesser titles

hidinginthenightgarden · 06/05/2019 19:45

Curlywurly that makes Charles sound a bit of a dick.

Princess Anne also turned down titles for her children. Her first husband declined a title too.

ScreamingValenta · 06/05/2019 19:46

that makes Charles sound a bit of a dick

It's one of his more sensible decisions IMO.

EdithWeston · 06/05/2019 19:47

Choice, really.

The Queen can do whatever she likes about titles of her offspring. Yes, guided by precedent, but actually anything she and they want

Aragog · 06/05/2019 19:47

Her children weren't entitled to use them as a birth right due to Anne being a daughter, not a son.

EdithWeston · 06/05/2019 19:49

"Princess Anne also turned down titles for her children. Her first husband declined a title too."

Wrong way round.

They decided her husband would not be ennobled. That meant there was no title for her DC.

AdaColeman · 06/05/2019 19:49

When Louise was born, both she and Sophie were very ill, and rejecting the HRH title eased the pressure on the family.
Also they would have seen how well Anne's children did without their royal titles, all the perks but few of the burdens of being part of The Firm.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 06/05/2019 19:49

This was Charles idea of the RF at the 2012 Jubilee to look streamlined and modern

Answeringonlyyesorno · 06/05/2019 20:02

Andrew insisted his girls were princesses, as with that title they get extra benefits than other titles. It was seen as very grabby as generally it's used by children of those directly in line to the throne. Not the spare.

PianoTuner567 · 06/05/2019 20:05

What burdens come with the title of princess as oppose to lady? Do you have to do more duties or something? What’s the actual practical difference?

PigletJohn · 06/05/2019 20:08

EdWinchester put it best.

ChicCroissant · 06/05/2019 20:17

I like EdWinchester's answer best!

I think it's something to do with the title of the father (Andrew is a Duke, Edward an Earl) and the position in the family. But I am no expert. I find all the layers of protocol fascinating, but I wouldn't like to deal with it on a day-to-day basis!

Because Andrew will have expected it while Edward doesn't really care?
