I really want one of these!

When I first got married 40 years ago I had one, then two, with fetching blue and pink flowers.
They had useful pockets and washed and drip dried really easily important in the days of twin tub washers and no central heating.
They kept my clothes nice and clean and stopped me spilling things all down myself am a scruffy cow but they have vanished. They are no more. Even my Mil hasn't had one for years, I thought they had gone for good.
Until yesterday in the French garden centre.
WIBU to buy one? I am of the right size and I have reached the age of invisibility so I should just go for it, right?

I really want one of these!

Ooh - my nan used to wear one of those! It was cornflower blue. That would have been about 40 years ago. Go for it!

Graphista · 05/05/2019 22:39

Amazon - "wrap around apron"

These remind me of my lovely grans who always dressed beautifully but used these to (sensibly) protect their clothes.

A house coat!!!

OP Please buy me one - I'll send money by Paypal.

My mum and grandma used to wear these and now. at the age of 55, I WANT ONE!!!!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 05/05/2019 22:45

A "Kittel" Smile I havn't seen one of those for ages. My gran's was striped, her sister wore them in a sickly unblueish blue. (My other gran DM's DM only ever wore crispy white aprons.)

averylongtimeago · 05/05/2019 22:45

So practical! They had some naice designs too!
Or am I just giving in to total fashion disaster in going for sensible over attractive?

Note: I like Hotter sanders. There is no hope is there?

Oh yes, a Hilda Ogden house coat. My nanna had a light blue one, I want one now!

Moneyisnteverything · 05/05/2019 22:47

I've still got one of these I brought back from France maybe 20 years ago. I've never found them again here. Buy them all!

loveliesbleeding1 · 05/05/2019 22:47

They’re more tabard than housecoat.A real housecoat is what Dot and Pauline wear in classic Easenders.Grin

PodgeBod · 05/05/2019 22:48

Just randomly saw these for sale in Romford about a week ago. Possibly making a come back? Grin I say go for it, I've ruined several items of clothing with bleach so might get one myself (and I'm still in my 20s)

PodgeBod · 05/05/2019 22:49

I would call it a "pinny"'

EverythingComesBackToYou · 05/05/2019 22:50

Bloody hell, a tabard!
Worn by dinnerladies

Loads of em on ebay

averylongtimeago · 05/05/2019 22:53

No, a tabard doesn't have sides, it just sort of has press studs.
A house coat can have sleeves (short) or be sleeveless but it must have sides.

This is a tabard

I really want one of these!

Tabards dyac. My nan only took hers off to go out or to bed.

myidentitymycrisis · 05/05/2019 22:59

I’ve been hankering after one of these for a few years. A friend who has family in Italy got one there. You can get o repro one on eBay. I’d quite like to make one, if I could get the pattern

averylongtimeago · 05/05/2019 22:59

I still have my Mum's pinnies.
She used to always put one on as soon as she came home from work.
They were mostly floral, with contrasting pockets and waistbands, usually with a frill round the edge.
And in the 70's you can imagine how tasteful they were!

The pocket was very useful- mum's usually had a kitten, her fags, matches, hankies and extra strong mints stuffed in.

I love these! Blush They are vintage nan chic.

(But I can’t abide by any of the shoes at Hotter, sorry OP!!!)

averylongtimeago · 05/05/2019 23:01

Myidendity I inherited my MiL's sewing pattern collection- I am sure I have seen a house coat pattern in there- I will have to look tomorrow

DontCallMeShitley · 05/05/2019 23:01

My cleaner had those (80's), may have got them from Italy though. My grandmother and mother called them pinafores although they also had those wrap around ones which were also called pinafores. 'Pinny'.

averylongtimeago · 05/05/2019 23:04

Oh the wrap around apron? My Mil thought they were common (sorry PP).
Only the best bri-nylon for her!

Another I know the shoes at hotter look vile, but if they are comfy....

You know you are getting old when you look in the free magazine and see those extra wide shoes for swollen footed old dears and think "they look comfy".
