I really want one of these!

When I first got married 40 years ago I had one, then two, with fetching blue and pink flowers.
They had useful pockets and washed and drip dried really easily important in the days of twin tub washers and no central heating.
They kept my clothes nice and clean and stopped me spilling things all down myself am a scruffy cow but they have vanished. They are no more. Even my Mil hasn't had one for years, I thought they had gone for good.
Until yesterday in the French garden centre.
WIBU to buy one? I am of the right size and I have reached the age of invisibility so I should just go for it, right?

I really want one of these!

DontCallMeShitley · 05/05/2019 23:09

My grandmas were small floral patterns and she tied them around the waist, only cotton fabric in those days.

There are sewing patterns for 'pinafore aprons' and overalls online, I regret getting rid of all my mother's old patterns, she made a lot of clothes, couldn't afford to buy new, so made or second hand and altered to fit.

Arrggghhh I remember the quilted nylon housecoat, the stuff of nightmares. And Brentford Nylons, quilted bedspreads, same kind of fabric but about 25 years later.

A kitten- yes, mum had a lot of cats.

Brentford nylons OMG!
We were given a bedspread from them - quilted top, frilled sides, in dog muck brown. You got an electric shock if you so much as looked at it.
I don't think that auntie liked us very much.
I also had a purple candlewick one, very 1979!

Averylongtimeago -- Are you my sister!!!!

We frequently shopped at Brentford Nylons!!!

How well I remember that electric spark when a rogue toe nail ran itself down a newly purchased candlewick!!!!

DumpTrump · 05/05/2019 23:20

I have one I bought off a French market stall. I love it but DH doesn't!

Nat6999 · 05/05/2019 23:36

Hilda Ogden wore one in Corrie.

Mumsymumphy · 05/05/2019 23:39

A dinner lady apron and Hotter sandals?

Is this you OP?:

My mum still wears hers. She’s Hungarian and they’re popular there. I’d seen some in Majorca last year on holiday. They were asking €30 for one Shock I wanted to get mum a newer one, but not for that much when they’re cheaper in Hungary. Btw, my Mum’s 78.

AlunWynsKnee · 06/05/2019 00:35

Candlewick didn't give you a shock, it was Brentford Nylons that got the static going. The quilted garishness (mine was orange) were the essence of a 70s childhood. Candlewick at my nan's with an electric oil heater thing and stripes flannel sheets are the happy bonus of those years.

GirlRaisedInTheSouth · 06/05/2019 00:39

Let’s all get one! The Mumsnet Housecoat 😁.

sackrifice · 06/05/2019 00:47

I made myself one last year. well, a cotton cross backed apron. Bloody love it.

gotmychocolateimgood · 06/05/2019 00:54

Not into these personally, but I have striped flannel sheets and love them 😍

notangelinajolie · 06/05/2019 00:56

Omg yes a housecoat. All the mum's used to wear them to protect their clothes while they were doing their housework. So so practical and very cool. I would pay good money for one of these!

tolerable · 06/05/2019 01:08

wow! am gony wear mine with cowboy boots n minimilistic(on everything but effect..)lingerie.. shant be standing on the windowsill..but reckon its cheaper n more durable than latest from ann summer dress ups.lols...tabards are great.do it x

myidentitymycrisis · 06/05/2019 01:11

averylongtimeago I would love a pattern for a wraparound one, if you come across it. PM.

Coniferhedge · 06/05/2019 07:49

I like this, the Japanese style housecoat/apron. Keep saying I’ll have a go at making one, when I get around to it.

look stylish but I just know it would keep slipping off my shoulders ans emphasise my short fat body

RamonaQuimbyAge8 · 06/05/2019 08:57

like this one?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/05/2019 09:34

The Japanese wrap won't fall off your shoulders... the weight of the lower half keeps it well anchored.

I make to them out of old curtains, lower the arm holes and make back thinner, easier to sit in, for crafting. They are really easy to wear.

dudsville · 06/05/2019 09:41

Why isn't this in S&B?!!!!!

sackrifice · 06/05/2019 10:35

That's the one I made...although I did make mine with plant pot shaped pockets.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/05/2019 11:21

Oh stop it!

Just read it or move on dudsy

Does it really matter?

Knittedfairies · 06/05/2019 11:22

My mum and grandma always wore pinnies; I made dozens for my mum over the years when she couldn't find them to buy. She stopped wearing a pinny the day she moved into residential care, but she always looked somehow unfinished to me.
