I really want one of these!

When I first got married 40 years ago I had one, then two, with fetching blue and pink flowers.
They had useful pockets and washed and drip dried really easily important in the days of twin tub washers and no central heating.
They kept my clothes nice and clean and stopped me spilling things all down myself am a scruffy cow but they have vanished. They are no more. Even my Mil hasn't had one for years, I thought they had gone for good.
Until yesterday in the French garden centre.
WIBU to buy one? I am of the right size and I have reached the age of invisibility so I should just go for it, right?

I really want one of these!

FrogFairy yes they do! Dexam are lovely cotton. I am very fussy about my pinnies Grin

Aww - this takes me back! My mum had a collection of what she called 'overalls', which were basically very thin long-sleeved housecoats and were worn pretty much all the time at home to protect her clothes. No idea what happened to them. I remember a pink striped one in particular.

I am right with you OP, I have wanted one of these for ages, the real Nora Batty.

You often see old women wearing them in France, but I have searched many market stalls there in vain.

I do have a Japanese one, but when you bend forward it all falls forward and is a faff to out back in the right place.

These ones are easy to whip on and off, but stay in place when you are wearing them.

I always wear an apron for housework or cooking (and often, eating). I am too messy to do otherwise without ruining whatever I'm wearing.

I had a bit of a weird exchange with an Amazon delivery guy one afternoon when I opened the door wearing it. He complimented me on the apron, and then said how back home all women at home wear aprons, but here hardly anyone does, and he thinks it is because too many women are lazy. I was a bit !!!

Got me thinking afterwards though, when we have such an issue with women's work being invisible and undervalued, that actually wearing a pinny can act as a uniform that tells other people you're working. I bet no-one ever assumed Nora Batty sat around watching daytime telly all day.

Positive- that's a dressing gown, sorry. You wear a dressing gown over your nighty or over you undies.

You wear a housecoat over your clothes.

A pinnie is a type of apron.

I can't find a housecoat pattern unfortunately.
But I have found these- ideal for the married couple I think.
I think they date from around 1975.

My Gran always wore a stripey "penny" when she was at home. I might need one as I have a tendency to wear my baking apron all day.

I used to get mixed up when I was little as she used to have "pennies" in the garden too - I was almost grown up when I realised they were peonies!

averylongtimeago · 06/05/2019 19:19

Now I do like that! I wonder if I can find a pattern on line?

Maybe I should buy them up and sell them on to mumsnetters?

@Ces6 you really should ,I've been looking on line on and off all day and can only find vintage second hand ones and these £20 jobbies

Oooh gosh my MIL's mum was a real fan of these - I don't think I ever saw her ”real” clothes. I'm a fan of an apron and wear a split-skirt one round the house so my clothes aren't in a state of constant filth. Get it, OP! (ps. Hotter shoes are also wonderful)

PickAChew · 07/05/2019 00:31

My gran used to wear one of those!

Seasalt do aprons with really good coverage - they go over head and all round with cross over straps. Mine is in a sttripy fabric, rather than plain and i love it because it has a massive front pocket and puts no strain on my very tender neck. This is the style

Toast have a version that costs almost 3 times as much!

PickAChew · 07/05/2019 00:41

And yes, the seasalt ones work like the Japanese ones, but with big pockets!

WattdeEll · 07/05/2019 01:03

My Nan used to wear these housecoats, in pink or blue and this telly takes me back. I early 40s and would love one of these in my life. So vintage and practical.
Love the Seasalt ones too.
