When did this become a thing..?? From 1pm all our local Facebook groups have been full of pics of the massive queues outside the city centre bars, places charging £14 to get in, friends of mine on facebook "Yay, May Day Sesh….!!!"

When did this become a thing..? Is it a thing everywhere..?? Is it just in Aberdeen...???

I have no idea! Maybe just Aberdeen Belmont Street was mobbed earlier! I've not long lived here but don't remember it being a thing anywhere else...

kaytee87 · 05/05/2019 18:01

Bank holiday weekends have been boozy for as long as I can remember.

Passthecherrycoke · 05/05/2019 18:03

Always has been in Oxford, you booze all night and carry on into the bank holiday. Happiest memories ever

Underhisi · 05/05/2019 18:09

It's called Super Sunday here and existed when I was a teenager many years ago.

washinglions · 05/05/2019 18:12

Nope, no binge drinking in this neck of the woods. The only thing that happens round here is that the morris dancers do their thing on the bank holiday Monday, and some kids dance around a maypole on the village green.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 05/05/2019 18:14

we are in Scotland we and don't really "do" bank holidays the way they do in England/..

That’s actually May 1st though, cherry. (And I kinda like the whole tradition thing). Other than Oxford, I’ve never heard of anywhere else that it’s a thing...

AgentProvocateur · 05/05/2019 18:17

I’m 50 and Sunday drinking on a holiday weekend was always a thing when I was in my early 20s. Also in Scotland.

Oh yes of course, it completely passed me by this year that May Day was a Wednesday

AragonsGirl · 05/05/2019 18:36

I’m near Aberdeen (Peterhead) and it’s a thing here, seems to be one of the biggest weekends for drinking. My Facebook feed has also been full of people getting their hair/makeup done for May Day weekend

MatthewBramble · 05/05/2019 18:53

Never heard of anything like this (in the south of England).

Danglingmod · 05/05/2019 18:54

Nope, never heard of it.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 05/05/2019 18:56

I wouldn't have said it was a thing here, but Birmingham and London have both had packed bars the last two bank holidays, crazy queues.

kaytee87 · 05/05/2019 18:56

Yes we do 😂

Natsku · 05/05/2019 18:57

May Day drinking is very big where I live - it's the second biggest drinking holiday of the year (midsummer being the biggest). Nice to hear that Brits are getting into the spirit of it too.

BitchQueen90 · 05/05/2019 19:01

Everyone I know goes out drinking on the bank holiday weekend. I don't now due to having young DS but I'll be having a Wine tonight.

jobbymcginty · 05/05/2019 19:02

I used to live in Aberdeen and it was never a thing then, was 20 years ago though

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 05/05/2019 19:04

Nobody gives a fuck about bank holidays in my neck of the woods...

Passthecherrycoke · 05/05/2019 19:06

Ooo Natsku are you in Norway? I’ve always loved the idea of big midsummer celebrations

ExpletiveDelighted · 05/05/2019 19:13

The only time in my whole life I've been drunk in the morning was May Day years ago. A friend was a Morris Dancer and they did a sunrise dance outside the local pub which opened early. We all went in for an orange juice at about 6am and it was all very civilised until the landlord announced happy hour......

Natsku · 05/05/2019 19:18

Finland. Midsummer is my favourite celebration - big bonfires, cooking sausages on the fire, staying outside all day/evening, no bedtime for the kids but stay up late and enjoy the longest day.

Passthecherrycoke · 05/05/2019 19:22

Sounds wonderful

SimonJT · 05/05/2019 19:27

If I wasn’t a parent I would have spent the weekend getting battered and recovering on the Monday.

InTheHeatofLisbon · 05/05/2019 19:27

Scotland here too, I don't get the whole bank holiday fuss so I'm with OP that we don't do it the way England does.

That said I'm in Lanarkshire where fucking anything above 12 degrees means taps aff and drink sold out everywhere by 11am!
