Just seen the venus shaving advert. A woman was shaving her whole arm?! Why?!

OP posts:
MenuPlant · 05/05/2019 12:10

Strange then that the person shaving their arms in the advert was a woman.

bamboofibre · 05/05/2019 12:11

Gawd, so one person you found on Insta got trolled on Insta about her arm air and you've gone to extend that to dipping kids in Veet at the age of 8. FFS. I've removed arm hair since the 80s because I have light skin and much really dark body hair and I lived in a hot climate so I found all that hair hot and trapped sweat and I didn't like it.

Lots of men shave because they don't want a beard even though it's natural. People have been removing body hair for millennia.

MenuPlant · 05/05/2019 12:12

I wish people would be a bit more honest.

I shave my legs, I accept this is not a feminist thing to do and that my compliance makes it more difficult for other women and girls not to comply.

I know that my girls see me do it and this makes it normal for them.

If I did my arms I would be contributing to normalising that as well.

LynetteScavo · 05/05/2019 12:13

I actually think shaving arm hair is a bit weird. Like male cyclists who shave their legs.

MenuPlant · 05/05/2019 12:14

The women on Instagram was in the news, I didn't find her.

Along with a lot of commentary around how this is the next female grooming thing that will be normalised.

I read it and agreed.

You can think otherwise, that is of course fine.

bamboofibre · 05/05/2019 12:15

I shave my legs and arms. My girls see me do it. One waxes her legs, the other, age 13, doesn't remove any body hair at all. Meh.

MenuPlant · 05/05/2019 12:17

And oh look now we have an ad in UK for first time showing woman shaving arms, being presented as standard thing to do amongst groups of beautiful empowerfulised aspirational female models, for everyone in the family to see. Girls and boys consume the message.

JaneJeffer · 05/05/2019 13:47

I don’t think it should be shown on tv no. It’s just another stick to beat girls with.
I agree. All this hair removal has got to ridiculous levels.

icannotremember · 05/05/2019 13:53

I do. I hate the feel of my arm hair. What's it matter to you? They're not your arms.

SnuggyBuggy · 05/05/2019 13:54

I don't why it's any worse than shaving your legs

DecomposingComposers · 05/05/2019 13:57

Since when did "my body, my choice" become "your body, my judgement"?

Why does it matter OP? You can do what you want and others can do what they want.

Splodgetastic · 05/05/2019 13:58

No wonder people are always complaining that it’s too cold!

Splodgetastic · 05/05/2019 14:02

I do know one man who has no arm hair and I wondered whether it was naturally like that, due to some kind of hormone imbalance or he was getting rid of it. I must admit, I find it a bit strange not seeing body hair on arms, whether male or female. I’ve never really noticed other girls with literally no hair on their arms.

userxx · 05/05/2019 14:02

I used to but as I've got older they aren't as hairy or dark.

bamboofibre · 05/05/2019 14:24

Many people of Eastern Asian, black and Native American extraction have very little body hair and consequently, a lot of mixed race people don't have a lot of body hair.

PregnantSea · 05/05/2019 14:41

People can shave or not shave whatever they like. Obviously a company which sells razors is going to encourage people to shave as much as possible, that's how they make money. It isn't a feminist issue. I also see adverts on tv for McDonald's but I don't go and eat there just because I saw the advert. Adverts don't have to rule your life. Please have some independent thought.

MenuPlant · 05/05/2019 14:47

Adverts for McDonald's and other fast food adverts are banned in certain environments and situations.
Children and young people are more impressionable than adults.

Advertising is v effective, if it wasn't companies wouldn't spend such vast amounts of money on it. Its not just friendly neutral suggestions.

Standards of female beauty/ or even acceptability have always been a feminist issue.

People can remove whatever hair they want, pretending it's a neutral individual decision is v short sighed though.

haverhill · 05/05/2019 14:50

I’m 48 and this is the first time I’ve heard of arm shaving. Every day’s a school day. I have arm hair but to be honest I can hardly be arsed to do my legs.

DecomposingComposers · 05/05/2019 15:21

I have a problem with people policing what others do with their own bodies. Either we have the right to make our own choices or we don't.

Why do some people feel that it's ok to judge others choices - be that hair removal, cosmetic surgery, clothes, make up, weight - in the name of feminism?

Yet feminists demand that women be allowed to choose abortion because a woman should have ultimate choice over their own bodies? Despite that the availability of abortion makes it more difficult for some women to continue with pregnancies. Choice means choice. The choice to abort or not. The choice to shave or not. Etc etc etc.

Not your body? Then you have no say.

I wish people would stop trying to police what individuals do with their own bodies (on both sides of the argument). It's still controlling even if it's a feminist doing the controlling.

icannotremember · 05/05/2019 15:26

My mum is a woman who thinks body hair is a political issue. The hassle she gave me through my teens for removing mine was ridiculous. Once I'd been trimming pubic hair and the madwoman found it in the bathroom bin and marched into my room to tell me I should not be doing it. As if what I do with my body hair is her business or anyone else's! I won't be told what I can and can't do with my body. I have the same contempt for people who want to shame me for removing it as for people who want to shame me when I don't remove it. Both groups can fuck the fuck off.

twitterbird · 05/05/2019 15:27

My sister and two of my friends have done this for years

Helmetbymidnight · 05/05/2019 15:32

younger women do - the important thing is to say that they all arrived at the idea completely separately and it has nothing to do with societal expectations.
nothing.
never ever question stuff.

DecomposingComposers · 05/05/2019 15:42

icannotremember

Exactly!

SpaceCadet4000 · 05/05/2019 16:01

I don't shave my arms, but I do remove plenty of other body hair. I was aware this was a thing and it doesn't bother me that anyone is doing it. You do you.

The Venus ad is quite interesting- Proctor & Gamble are part of a huge initiative to remove negative gender stereotypes from advertising. Most likely their narrative is that the women is shaving her arm hair to show her tattoos (not to look desirable to the male gaze). They've shown armpit stubble, the women included are diverse, and they are trying to subvert the idea that body hair removal is done for others.

There's things I could criticise about the ad, but I don't think they've included arm shaving with an intent to get us all shaving our arms. It's more an attempt to subvert the message on the reasons we shave.

MenuPlant · 05/05/2019 16:14

Lol at company flogging beautification products to women being subversive 😁
