How do you pronounce 'Peugeot' and 'Renault' ?

A friend of mine from many years ago used to say 'Pyoo-go' and 'Ren-ult'. I've never heard these pronunciations from anybody else. I don't know if his Scottish heritage is significant but he has lived in England for well over forty years.

I say 'Pur-zhoh' and 'Ren-oh', as I think most people do.

per-zhyoh

ren-oh

TakenForSlanted · 04/05/2019 13:26

Per-jor and Rer-nor (as in "mermaid" and "normal", best approximations I can come up with.)

Reasonstobeearful · 04/05/2019 13:28

LOL yes it's a Scottish thing. No idea why. See also "Perzil" for Persil.

heymammy · 04/05/2019 13:28

I say pyoo-zho and renn-oh. I'm Scottish but lived in England for years and the Peugout thing was the cause of much hilarity amongst my peers!

homemadegin · 04/05/2019 13:29

Pue zho

Reno

Scotland Grinthat was hard to write as I say!

SwedishEdith · 04/05/2019 13:29

NoonAim · 04/05/2019 13:31

Pew-zho and Ren-oh (don't know where people are getting all the extra Rs from?) Confused

StoorieHoose · 04/05/2019 13:31

Scotland here

Peuzho
Renoh

isabellerossignol · 04/05/2019 13:31

Peu-zho and ren-oh

Have only ever heard 'perjoh' in ads on TV and could never understand where the 'r' came from.

But a zillion mumsnet threads about rhotic and non rhotic accents has educated me. Smile

MrsBungle · 04/05/2019 13:32

I also say pyoo and Renault. I’m Scottish. Don’t know why we say it like that Grin

Drogosnextwife · 04/05/2019 13:34

I'm Scottish and I say them the way your friend does OP, I know it's wrong I just can't change it now, it's been too long 😂

Drogosnextwife · 04/05/2019 13:36

Although I would be pyoo-go, but pyoo-jo but I can't think how to write the J with the pronunciation I do haha

IndigoSpritz · 04/05/2019 13:38

I thought it might be a Scottish thing. Thankyou all.

WeeDangerousSpike · 04/05/2019 13:39

Purr-zhoh
Ren-oh

Porsche is the one that gets me, I know it's porsh-ah, but it sounds so contrived!

RoomR0613 · 04/05/2019 13:41

Purjoh and Renoh

Topseyt · 04/05/2019 13:43

I would pronounce them the same as you.

They are French brand names, so that is the correct pronunciation in my opinion. Closest to the French.

MatchSetPoint · 04/05/2019 13:44

Purr-show and REN-owe

hewontstopshitting · 04/05/2019 13:45

Purr-zyo and reno

DippyAvocado · 04/05/2019 13:46

Peu in French is in between 'puh' and 'per' and geot is pronounced "zho". It definitely isn't any variation on "pew".

DetectiveSantiago · 04/05/2019 13:51

Per-jyo
Ren-oh

cheesenpickles · 04/05/2019 13:54

per-gzho and rE-Noh

My mum always called it a poo-jhoooooo really elongated for the giggles.
