How do you pronounce 'Peugeot' and 'Renault' ?

A friend of mine from many years ago used to say 'Pyoo-go' and 'Ren-ult'. I've never heard these pronunciations from anybody else. I don't know if his Scottish heritage is significant but he has lived in England for well over forty years.

I say 'Pur-zhoh' and 'Ren-oh', as I think most people do.

Ren-alt

TherapistInATabard · 04/05/2019 14:02

They say pyoo-zho in Northern Ireland as well. DH had a Peugeot when we first met and they way he pronounced it confused me greatly. Not sure about Renault.

Oldraver · 04/05/2019 14:06

Also h you mus for hummus

Hal-el- lool- ya for hallelujah

She’s great fun

flowery · 04/05/2019 14:15

”Nugget for nougat”

I was brought up pronouncing it that way. Still can’t bring myself to pronounce it noo-gah, as it feels pretentious to me, so I just avoid saying it.

AlphaJura · 04/05/2019 14:18

My step dad says Pew Jo. Think he may say Ren-alt too. I just assumed it's because he's dislexic.

keepingbees · 04/05/2019 14:22

Pur-jo and ren-o

Never heard them pronounced any other way Confused

LetsSplashMummy · 04/05/2019 14:35

With a Scottish accent, you can't just stick an "r" into a word without completely changing it. It isn't so much anglicising it, but that the French "peu" is closer to p-zyou in a Scottish accent than per. It's only near per if you don't say your Rs.

Whisky2014 · 04/05/2019 14:35

Wren-oh
Pyoo-jhoe
If that makes sense

beanaseireann · 04/05/2019 14:38

PutyourtoponTrevor · 04/05/2019 15:21

Per-zso
Renno

Trufflethewuffle · 04/05/2019 15:23

Local FB page is full of pictures of poor parking in supermarket car parks. There then follows a pile on from two sides, those who agree with the poster and those who don't.

The other day someone had posted a photo of poor parking and described it as being typical of a "perjoe" driver! It's the only time I've seen unanimous replies, every single one laughing about the use of "perjoe" rather than the poor parking in the photo!

irnbruforlife · 04/05/2019 15:46

Pew Joe and ren no. Scottish here.

Marmite27 · 04/05/2019 18:33

Jinglejanglefish · 04/05/2019 20:04

*Pur-jo and ren-o

Never heard them pronounced any other way*

This! I have never heard anyone say some of these pronounciations! What is pyoo? How does that sound?

sweetkitty · 04/05/2019 20:07

Glasgow here and it’s Poooo-joe and Ren-oooo

Drives me mad as I lived down South for years and it’s Per-zho to me (pronounce it like the French do)

VeronicaDinner · 04/05/2019 20:09

People in Scotland tend to say Peugeot differently, from my experience of working with vehicles. They say pewjo instead of perjo.

They also often say jai for J.

BigBadBoom · 04/05/2019 20:19

I've lived in Scotland for many years but am English, and starting to regret recently buying a Peugeot for this very reason. I say 'purr-zho' and anything else seems like madness, but my husband says 'pee-u-zho'. We knew this already, and thought it was a funny thing to have a laugh disagreeing about, but every time I speak to the garage I now find myself gritting my teeth and saying it the 'Scottish' way because otherwise I feel like I'm a pretentious twat trying to correct them Grin

FYI straw poll at my work found an even split between Scots/English heritage and how they pronounced it.

My husband and I also argue about diplodocus...

Stravapalava · 04/05/2019 20:45

Per-zhoh
Renn-oh

I know someone who says Pej-oh for Peugeot and it makes me wince.
