Hurt - Christina Aguilera. Came out when I was having a rough time and the worlds related so much, now every time I hear it it reminds me of that time.
Goodbye (is the saddest word) - Celine Dion - if you listen to it you’ll understand why... it will remind you of anyone you’ve ever lost.

StormyLovesOdd · 02/05/2019 22:38

Hurt - sung my Jonnie Cash, every time I think about the song the video pops into my head, it's just so sad seeing him vulnerable and old. And

Sally Can Wait by Oasis - because it reminds me of my lovely dog who was called Sally and passed away when this song was played a lot, I can't listen to it without tearing up

buckeejit · 02/05/2019 22:46

Loads of these - great thread.

Also:
Nick Cave -the ship song
Tim Minchin - drinking white wine in the sun

Herland · 02/05/2019 22:57

Days by Kirsty McColl - so bittersweet.

Jealous by Labrinth - especially because it's an autobiographical song about his dad. I can't imagine walking away from my name kids.

Into my arms by Nick Cave. His voice, the melody, the words. It's just perfectly sad.

Little Green by Joni Mitchell about her child she had adopted.

Songbird by Eva Cassidy - How ironic that the first line is "For you there'll be no crying" Gets me every time! 😭

Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison. I used to sing it to my dog when we were in the car. And ... the theme tune to Dinnerladies.

Giggorata · 02/05/2019 23:12

Ride On - Christy Moore. So poignant. Also personally meaningful.
Time Stand Still - Rush. All about time slipping awaaaaay...
The Last Time I Saw Richard - Jodi Mitchell. song for my hippy generation.
Gortoz a Ran - Lisa Gerrard and Denis Prigent. Don't have to understand a word of this - it pierced the soul.
Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd. Growing up, losing the magic..... ouch
Yesterday - Beatles. Soundtrack of my generation
Without You - Nilsson. He sings his pain..
It's Over - Roy Orbison. Lovely emotional voice.
The Grave - Don McClean. gets me every time. Horrors of war..
The Brunnen G Fight Song from Lexx... this is special, but you probably need to know the backstory.

OldAndWornOut · 02/05/2019 23:18

I feel tearful just reading the thread, and I don't even know some of the songs!

Giggorata · 02/05/2019 23:19

Joni, dammit

Herland · 02/05/2019 23:20

Good Grief by Bastille.

Overlyinvested · 02/05/2019 23:21

Annie Lennox - Angel
Kate Bush - This Woman’s Work

duckme · 02/05/2019 23:22

Baby Mine. I listened to the original twice on the way to work a few weeks ago and cried both times. Then I cried just thinking about the song. I'm normally a hard hearted cow but the bit where all the other mommy and baby animals are snuggled up together and dumbo has to be cuddled through the bars honestly breaks my heart. I actually feel the pain of his mom.
I may be a little hormonal 🤔

Herland · 02/05/2019 23:25

duckme I took the kids to see Dumbo recently and wept in anticipation of that moment. I made my children hold my hands. It's utterly heartbreaking even when not hormonal.

Herland · 02/05/2019 23:27

...and while we're talking about Joni @Giggorata. What about Both Sides Now?

Calphurnia · 02/05/2019 23:31

Dakota by Stereophonics
Smile Like you Mean It, by the Killers

OldAndWornOut · 02/05/2019 23:34

Days - Kirsty McColl
Sweet Thames Flow Softly - Ewan McColl (Kirsty's dad, I think) my ex used to sing it to me..
Everybody Hurts - REM
I Am A Rock - Simon and Garfunkel

BillywigSting · 02/05/2019 23:35

Beko by Peter Gabriel, as a teenager it made me furious, now it just makes me weep

Friend of ours by elbow, a friend of mine died around the release of that album, and that song came on my shuffle play list the morning of his funeral while I was getting ready. I did not do a good job of holding it together.

Numb by linkin Park. Have to turn the radio off when that song comes on now, I'm still not ready to listen to it again yet.

BillywigSting · 02/05/2019 23:38

To a pp who said comfortably Numb by pink Floyd, I'm not sure that's exactly about growing up and losing the magic, I think it's more about Syd barret and his descent drug induced madness.

If you want a heartbreaking loss of innocence pink Floyd song it has to be high hopes from the division bell.

WhispersOfWickedness · 02/05/2019 23:40

Yy to Baby Mine!!
I always found it sad in Dumbo, but then it was also used in a scene in ER, where one of the characters was giving her baby up for adoption and sings it to the baby as she's handing it over 😭
Also Rockabye by Clean Bandit, (although there is an acoustic version which is even better). In my defence, it came out when my DS was also six, so it just totally makes me think of him and the struggles mothers in general have in keeping their babies safe...

OldAndWornOut · 02/05/2019 23:41

Bicycle repair kit - Elbow
Light Up - Leona Lewis.

SarfE4sticated · 02/05/2019 23:44

Oooh my favourite is:

Nothing compares 2 u - sung by Sinead O'Conner - such pain!
Love and Affection - Joan Armatrading
Cold - Annie Lennox

and leaving the 80's behind and coming a bit more up to date

Say you remember me - Taylor Swift

AuchAyeTheNo · 02/05/2019 23:49

Coldplay’s The Scientist 😭
