Why do some black jeans smell so bad?

And is there a way to get rid of it?

Not all black jeans, I usually buy in M&S and have never noticed it, but recently bought a pair in Peacocks and as soon as they get warm as I wear them, they stink! It's definitely the jeans and not me! A kind of plastic/chemical/very synthetic smell.

I've washed them 3 times so far but they still smell just as bad as soon as I wear them, has anyone found an effective way to get rid of it?

I think it is the dye. Washing will get rid of it in the end. Also means they will likely fade too.

Aquamarine1029 · 28/04/2019 10:20

It's the dye. I had a pair years ago that I actually had to throw away. I washed them loads of times and the smell never budged.

I've just had this for the first time a few weeks ago. Primark black skinny jeans, they whiffed pretty badly of chemicals especially when warm!
I put a generous squirt of white vinegar in the washing machine with them, and it has removed the smell (they don't smell of vinegar either!).

I've tried a wash with white vinegar today @awkwardpaws27, saw it online and wasn't convinced but your post made me decide to give it a go so we'll see how they dry!

I've noticed this for the first time with a black pair from Gap. I started getting a bit paranoid it was me until I figured out it was actually the jeans!

CaptainPovey · 29/04/2019 21:28

Ýes, yes, yes. Never buy them now.
And they fade very quickly

redeyetonowheregood · 29/04/2019 21:30

I bought a pair of black jeans in a cheap shop on the US lately and have had the same problem. I washed them about 10 times then gave up and have stopped wearing them. They really do stink. Sort of oily and chemically.

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 29/04/2019 21:32

Yes I have noticed this! It's a sort of sulphur smell

managedmis · 29/04/2019 21:32

Had the same problem

Thought it was just me!

Theyhaveallbeenused2 · 29/04/2019 21:34

Actually just came hear to say I work in a shop (peacocks funnily enough) and when we unpack them they stink!! Dont know why though

candycane222 · 29/04/2019 21:35

I've got an ancient dorothy perkins pair that I've had for about 7 years, and they still smell! Weird, isn't it?
Do let us know if the vinegar thing works!

WokenUp · 29/04/2019 21:37

Can honestly say I've never experienced this with black jeans!

LittleMachine · 29/04/2019 21:54

Some dark blue ones do too. I seem to be allergic to jeans that smell like this, but I’m fine with ones that don’t!

Tubbyinthehottub · 29/04/2019 22:02

Me too, LittleMachine. They give me awful red bumpy rashes on my lower legs Sad

Bumbalaya · 29/04/2019 22:16

YES! I bought some black dungarees from Fat Face and they stink! I keep washing them and yes they are faded but they still smell so bad.

LittleMachine · 29/04/2019 22:25

So if you ever see anyone in a shop sniffing jeans, that’s me 🙋‍♀️😂

DontCallMeShitley · 29/04/2019 23:15

Not just jeans, I have bought bedding that has reeked of chemicals. It didn't wash out, even with vinegar, and it was white bedding.

However this might explain the smelly jeans nowtoronto.com/whats-that-chemical-smell-on-new-clothing/

GunpowderGelatine · 30/04/2019 00:21

I had a pair of grey Primark jeggings that honestly stank of dog poo no matter how much I washed them. I binned them in the end

TheQueef · 30/04/2019 00:22

It's formaldehyde the embalming stuff.

AlunWynsKnee · 30/04/2019 00:36

LittleMachine or it's me Grin DH is baffled by me sniffing displays.

BearSoFair · 02/05/2019 13:40

I've tried the vinegar twice, they still smell Sad I wonder if I could just hang them outside for a few days once the weather is nicer again and see if good old fresh air helps!

Black jeans are such a rip off - couple of washes and they become a dirty grey - why bother?

CaptainPovey · 02/05/2019 21:42

@dayswithaY

Totally, they end up looking proper mank - they stink and end up fading to get rid of the smell

I even tried Dylon - waste of time money and effort

DobbyTheHouseElk · 02/05/2019 21:44

My M&S Black jeans stink until they are grey. I’ve got a new pair and I’m gearing myself up for the stink.

Stickyears · 02/05/2019 22:25

Wash with linen scented zoflora? No idea if it would help but worth a go
