Whites of eyes turning yellow and itchy skin. Can anyone reassure me? Google has left me feeling very worried.

Hi all,

Basically, I had what was diagnosed as allergic conjunctivitis a couple of months ago. Extremely itchy eyes which became very swollen. The itching hasn't completely stopped but it has improved. I looked in the mirror this morning and one of my eyes looked blood shot. I had a closer look only to realise the whites of my eyes are tinged yellow. I have also had extremely itchy skin on my hips for the last 6 weeks which I had put down to maybe dry skin. I've been lathering moisturiser on which has helped a little but I've seen that this could be linked to the yellow eyes. I'm only 30 and a mum of 2 and I'm feeling really scared and worried right now. I'll obviously call the GP first thing tomorrow but with words like liver cirrhosis and pancreatic cancer coming up when I google, I'm feeling pretty terrified. I just wanted to confide in someone but I don't have many people IRL so just looking for a handhold/any advice or reassurance. Has anyone else been through this?

Thank you.

Yellowing eyeballs aren't good.

Is there a walk in centre at your local hospital?

liontigerzebra · 28/04/2019 10:11

give NHS 111 a call straight away. Ignore Google.

TigerBreadAddict · 28/04/2019 10:15

Yes get it checked, of course, but as someone who has frequently bloodshot eyes, my whites often tinge yellow from the breakdown products of the blood. Hopefully there is nothing serious for you and it is some kind of allergy x

how is your diet op?

EntirelyAnonymised · 28/04/2019 10:25

Yellowing of the eyes and itchy skin do point to something going on with the liver. I’d make an appointment with the GP tomorrow to get it checked out and get some bloods taken.

PippilottaLongstocking · 28/04/2019 10:26

Sounds like possible liver problem

EntirelyAnonymised · 28/04/2019 10:26

(‘Something’ but not necessarily ‘something serious and irreversible’)

BurnedToast · 28/04/2019 10:26

There's no point you asking here OP. However, we'll meaning no one will be able to diagnose you on a forum. And if anything, you are likely to be misadvised or scared witless. Do bear in mind, no HCP would come on a forum to diagnose someone they haven't seen so any advice you do get is mist likely to be as qualified as any random off the street. Go to the local walk in centre /a and E or contact 111. That's the onto advice anyone here should be giving you.

AnotherWorry1 · 28/04/2019 10:27

My diet isn't amazing and I do have a history of anaemia. But I don't think that ties in with the itchy skin.

Gah. Excuse the typos. If am balancing a 1 year old on my lap.

WhiskersPete · 28/04/2019 10:28

I don’t think pruritus due to liver conditions would be confined to one area like the hips though. Surely a bloodshot red eye might look a bit yellow?

I would definitely go to the GP but could well just be an allergy.

EleanorReally · 28/04/2019 10:29

I second with the GP tomorrow idea

EleanorReally · 28/04/2019 10:30

are you on any medication?

AnotherWorry1 · 28/04/2019 10:31

I'm on medication.

The contraceptive pill (microgynon)
Ranitidine
Fexofenadine (above maximum dosage as prescribed by my specialist)

and have you checked the side effects?

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 28/04/2019 10:35

I think a visit to the GP tomorrow is your best bet.

It could be your liver (and by the way there are loads of things that can cause jaundice, it’s not just liver disease or cancer) OR it could just be that your eyes look yellow because of your allergies and your skin is just itchy because it’s dry. The only way to know is to see a doctor who can examine you and perform the necessary tests.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 28/04/2019 10:35

Sounds like something up with your liver perhaps. I've had the same symptoms. Have a look when you next go to the loo. Dark urine, pale stools are signs too. Request a GP appointment for tomorrow

stucknoue · 28/04/2019 10:46

Go to out of hours gp, jaundiced eyes and itchy skin probably indicates a liver problem

Callywalls · 28/04/2019 10:47

Try not to worry. A family member had same thing and it turned out to be gallstones which needed immediate treatment- please see your GP as soon as possible.

Romax · 28/04/2019 10:48

Do you drink excessively OP?

AnotherWorry1 · 28/04/2019 10:49

I hardly drink at all.

Do you eat fatty food?

EleanorReally · 28/04/2019 10:51

or bread?

AnotherWorry1 · 28/04/2019 10:57

Yes, I eat bread and other fatty foods. I have a healthy bmi, if that's relevant?

As a PP said if you’ve had bloodshot eyes, the yellowish tinge could simply be due to the breakdown of blood - a bit like the yellowing of a bruise in your skin.

Get it checked out but don't panic - it’s much more likely to be a combination of conjunctivitis/eczema than anything else
