Whites of eyes turning yellow and itchy skin. Can anyone reassure me? Google has left me feeling very worried.

Hi all,

Basically, I had what was diagnosed as allergic conjunctivitis a couple of months ago. Extremely itchy eyes which became very swollen. The itching hasn't completely stopped but it has improved. I looked in the mirror this morning and one of my eyes looked blood shot. I had a closer look only to realise the whites of my eyes are tinged yellow. I have also had extremely itchy skin on my hips for the last 6 weeks which I had put down to maybe dry skin. I've been lathering moisturiser on which has helped a little but I've seen that this could be linked to the yellow eyes. I'm only 30 and a mum of 2 and I'm feeling really scared and worried right now. I'll obviously call the GP first thing tomorrow but with words like liver cirrhosis and pancreatic cancer coming up when I google, I'm feeling pretty terrified. I just wanted to confide in someone but I don't have many people IRL so just looking for a handhold/any advice or reassurance. Has anyone else been through this?

Thank you.

This might be TMI but I've just been for a wee and checked the colour and it's normal. Hopefully that's a good sign.

That's good. When I had hepatitis I had the jaundice and the itching but I also had wee the colour of tea and very pale poo

Obviously get checked. But I’ve seen jaundice and when eyes go yellow you don’t need to peer to see it - it’s very evident and other people would have noticed too.

Mine are faintly yellow at the bottoms like THIS and I don’t have jaundice.

But please see a doctor anyway. MN is not a good alternative (or any site).

You're right, AllAboutMeAlways. I went back to reread the OP and if you have jaundice you don't have to peer. It's really obvious. Mine were first spotted by DF from several feet away.

So perhaps you don't have jaundice, OP, which is good news. I'd still advise the GP tomorrow.

Please see GP. Hope it's just something trivial.

I have a pregnancy related liver thing and itchy skin was the first symptom. From what I understand mine is basically caused by oestrogen levels from the pregnancy and some normal contraceptives can cause similar issues. A friend with gall bladder problems had similar symptoms. So even if it is a liver/gall problem it may well be easy to solve.

bluebell34567 · 28/04/2019 11:34

agree with Eleanor, can you check the side effects of your medications?

MadisonMontgomery · 28/04/2019 11:36

Before I had my gallbladder out I had jaundice a couple of times - nobody seemed particularly concerned, so try not to panic. I would ring 111 for advice.

potatopeelings · 28/04/2019 11:38

The two symptoms might be related to one another, they might be entirely separate.

Have a look at the symptoms for Gilbert's Syndrome, which is a benign liver condition.

Gingernaut · 28/04/2019 12:27

Could be gallbladder or liver.

Just get a blood test done asap

AnotherWorry1 · 28/04/2019 18:55

My eyes definitely aren't obviously yellow. You do need to look closely and it's mainly the area where the bloodshot bit was. Other than that, they are both slightly tinged yellow when lower lids are pulled down. But it is mild.
