How often would you say you get a stomach bug/infection/virus per year?

OP posts:
yearinyearout · 28/04/2019 08:27

I've only had full on stomach bugs about 4 or 5 times in my adult life (severe as it can't leave the house in case I need the loo/can't keep anything down)

Theoldwoman · 28/04/2019 08:32

About once every 2-3 years. Same with both my kids and DH.

Enb76 · 28/04/2019 09:07

Stomach bug twice in my life, bad cold probably every five years or so. Actual flu, once in my life oh, and I came down with pneumonia in my early 20’s when I was travelling.

I usually get at least one stomach bug a year. I don't really tend to pick up many viruses, but I do get recurrent tonsillitis. I work with very young children and this year most of my colleagues and I caught the very persistent tummy bug and the fifths disease that went round.

Clutterbugsmum · 28/04/2019 10:05

Not since the children have got older. We had it most years when they were in KS1.

My other thought would be are you 'too clean'. You do need a certain amount of 'germs' to improve your own anti bodies so you are less likely to get ill.

RestingBitchFaced · 28/04/2019 10:09

Hardly ever. The children have been ill but I haven't caught it from them somehow. I can't remember when I last had a day off sick from work. Annoying as others off sick all the time, it's difficult to believe they really are ill sometimes. Even more so after reading this thread!

kaytee87 · 28/04/2019 10:10

Hardly ever, I have a toddler and he's only ever had one as well.

Hot soap and water is better than anti bac gel btw.

kaytee87 · 28/04/2019 10:11

Hot water and soap even Grin

kaytee87 · 28/04/2019 10:12

Oh and I work with the public (some of them quite vulnerable and not very clean) part time and the rest of the time is spent at toddler groups / softplays etc.

AlphaJura · 28/04/2019 10:17

Hardly ever. Bad ones about 3 times in my life. And one of them was probably food poisoning. I have vomited more than that though due to hangovers and I also get severe acid reflux and that's caused me to be sick a few times.

puppylovebaby · 28/04/2019 10:21

I swear by Milton!!

If your dishes have been left over night, add a small amount 1/4 cap of Milton to the washing up.

Soak dish cloths inc a
Scrubbing brush in Milton over night to kill all
Bacteria (I put them in a jug!

Always Wash your hands after going to the loo

Using Milton wipes or a bowl of Milton and hot water , clean your phone, door
Handles, kitchen cupboards, loo (with a different cloth!)

You might have a low lying bug which you aren't shifting, I think cutting out sugar can help. But talk to a GP or alternatively a good naturopath.

Good luck - get cleaning!

tartandreams · 28/04/2019 10:25

Last stomach bug a good 7 years ago. Food poisoning last October, felt like I might die. First ever case of tonsillitis this month. Never ending colds as DD was premature and has a bit of a shit immune system when it comes to colds and catches everything, then passes it on!

tartandreams · 28/04/2019 10:26

I do vomit more than I used to, over eating, heartburn, food that just doesn't agree. I've never been the same since I was pregnant!

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 28/04/2019 10:29

Pre-kids? Effectively never.

Dd’s First year in nursery? About once a —week— month.

Now (with two kids in primary school) - once or twice a year.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 28/04/2019 10:35

My kids are 15 and 18. They've had 4 or 5 stomach bugs each in their lives (often at the same time obviously) and I have picked up a couple of those. Dh never has! Between the ages of 20 and 39 I never once threw up.

notangelinajolie · 28/04/2019 10:39

IBS so my life is a permanent stomach bug.

BikeRunSki · 28/04/2019 10:41

2 or 3 times ever. I’m 48.

stargirl1701 · 28/04/2019 10:42

I would say at least once a month. Nothing major but cough/cold/tonsillitis. I am a primary school teacher in Infants with 2 small DC of my own. I am also asthmatic.

archivebuildingsite · 28/04/2019 10:51

I don't think it's usual to have a stomach bug as often as once per year. Aside from pregnancy sickness I've only had one bout of vomiting in the last 15 years or so. My children don't get sickness bugs often either - I didn't send them to childcare til they were 3 and I think that contrary to urban legend letting their immune system mature a bit before exposing them to mass germ soup was probably better - they're all at school (eldest in year 8) and have only had a couple of stomach bugs each in their entire lives.

Colds more often - twice a year probably.

I think there must be an underlying cause behind yours Borelis and I doubt it's hygiene - though you should stop all the antibacterial wipes and eating with tissues, that's certainly doing more harm than good.

It sounds as though you do need the cause investigating, but you may struggle to get an NHS GP interested.

NC4Now · 28/04/2019 10:52

Last one I had was in 2003.

Reasonstobeearful · 28/04/2019 10:59

Last one I had was ten years ago. Kids had a few when they were little but not loads - maybe four in total?

People I know who have dogs seem to get what they call "bugs" quite frequently - I suspect it's just germs/bacteria due to having an animal in their house.

OP you do seem to have more than most. I'd get a sample looked at to see what's going on.

Sycamoretrees · 28/04/2019 11:08

How close to the toilet is your tooth brush? If you have a small bathroom the germs might be spraying up when you flush.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 28/04/2019 11:39

I checked my notes (I am like that Smile).

DS last in kindergarten 12 years ago
DD at Christmas 2007.
DH never to my knowledge, so probably before 1986
Me in 1987.

This is a household with no bleach or disinfectants (and no allergies).

littlemeitslyn · 28/04/2019 14:11

Once every 6 months

QueenofLouisiana · 28/04/2019 14:23

It’s almost 3 years since my last one- I’m a primary school teacher so exposed to all sorts of bugs. I think I’m lucky to have developed a good level of immunity (and I wash my hands, a lot!).
