How often would you say you get a stomach bug/infection/virus per year?

About every other year

SlidingDoor · 27/04/2019 19:09

Unusually hardy people —showing— —off— here.

Since having kids I get d&v about once a year. Before that it was about once every six years or whenever I travelled to North Africa.

Womaninnit · 27/04/2019 19:09

Now since getting the dog two years ago. Before that a fair few times whilst the DCs were little

Not lately, but they were definitely much more frequent when the dc were at nursery.

mrsm43s · 27/04/2019 19:10

Mostly none. However, we had a spate of stomach bugs when the children were nursery/reception age, which went round us all - maybe 3 or 4 within 2/3 years. Then it eased off, and nothing again for many years. With the exception of that period (and presumably a similar one when I, myself was a toddler), I've had about 3 or 4 in my life.

Fairylea · 27/04/2019 19:10

Maybe once a year. When I was younger and lived with my mum who didn’t have great hygiene and had 3 dogs we seemed to have them every few weeks! I’m very fussy about hygiene as an adult now as a result.

I have bad IBS so permanently feel like I have a stomach bug! Catching an actual sickness bug usually only happens to me once a year though

TickledOnion · 27/04/2019 19:15

I had one about 9 years ago. Both DDs (6&9) haven’t had one since they were about a year old.

knotsandcrosses · 27/04/2019 19:18

I've only had three stomach bugs in my life I'm over fifty. Ds23 and dd16 have only had one. It's something we mange to avoid thankfully.

pointythings · 27/04/2019 19:23

Last time I had full noro was in 2016 - caught it in my late dad's nursing home. Last time before that was in 2005. I'm not very susceptible.

Borelis · 27/04/2019 19:23

Ah thanks everyone for your answers.. very different to my experience..!

@Bortusesmoustache my experience is more like how yours was (once every 2 months or so..!) Do you know what stopped you getting them so frequently?

I can't quite pinpoint my cause.. I'm trying more things like antibacterial hand gel, bought the anti-bacterial/anti-viral dettol wipes to try and sort it out.. Only probable issues I can think of are:

  1. Live in a house share so I guess that might increase risk of bugs (esp as I live with fairly messy mid-20s people)
  2. I often use public loos (including at pubs etc) which I guess could also contribute?
  3. Using my phone on the loo (really bad habit)
  4. Leaving dishes for up to 48 hours before washing (though I use antibacterial washing up liquid but not sure if that helps).
  5. Last 10 years or so, I've never eaten anything that's been in contact with my hands - I always use clean tissues even when eating stuff like fries

Really getting me down :( I'm always either too hungry all the time or completely lost my appetite, nausea, diarrhea etc for several days until it resolves (been to GP who believe it is a stomach bug and not something else)

Whoops, meant to post that elsewhere, will report.

Dermymc · 27/04/2019 19:35

OP you are getting a lot of bugs. Sounds crazy but are you too clean?

Washing with hot soapy water is better than any type of antibac. Wash hands regularly. Wipe down door knobs regularly. Wash chopping boards before use in house share. Ensure your food is cooked properly.

happyhillock · 27/04/2019 19:38

Not had one for years

isabellerossignol · 27/04/2019 19:39

Last 10 years or so, I've never eaten anything that's been in contact with my hands - I always use clean tissues even when eating stuff like fries

Your hands would probably be cleaner than tissues, assuming you have washed them.

BillywigSting · 27/04/2019 19:39

I had it once in primary school and once when ds brought it home from nursery.

I was called to pick him up as he had been vomiting, and no sooner did they bring him out than he proceeded to hurl all over me.

My mum is a nurse though so good hand washing and general infection control has been well and truly drummed into me (likewise ds. Dp is a work in progress who still has to be reminded to wash his hands when he blows his nose)

DameSylvieKrin · 27/04/2019 19:41

I’ve had five bugs in 2019, but my daughter just started nursery. It was once a year before then.
I wonder if you’ve maybe just messed up your gut bacteria? I took a course of probiotics after the last time; it wasn’t cheap but was worth it.

Emmabryant123 · 27/04/2019 19:42

I don't ever remember having one
And am 25
Totally jinxed that now
Last one must of been when I was v little
