Did you grow taller than your parents?

My grandmother's on both sides were very short (just over 5 foot) and both grandfather's were at the 6 foot mark.
My parents were 5'6" and 5"9
I ended up being 5' 10 DH is 5' 10
Our DD is 6 ' 1" and a bit, DS is 6'
It makes me wonder , of they have kids one day, will they be taller still?

Also, I am just curious if it is the same with most people s families (each generation gets a bit taller)?

Dm is 5' 6 and dd 5'10. I'm 5' 7 and db 5' 11.
Dh is 6'2, ds 6'1 and dd 5'6 so the females haven't changed much, but the males have grown taller over the three generations.

My mum is 5 ,4” and dad 6,3” and I’m 5,6” so taller than mum but no where near dad .

moonrises · 27/04/2019 08:07

Shorter than both. Though I am now taller than my Dad as he is shrinking.

My 13 year old is the same height as me.

3in4years · 27/04/2019 08:40

No

Raisinbrain · 27/04/2019 09:01

My brother and sister and I are all shorter than our parents.

TattiePants · 27/04/2019 09:24

At 5ft 11” I’m taller than all my DM’s side of the family but shorter than DF who is 6ft 2 or 3”. Both my DC’s will probably be taller than me. At 8 DD is the height of an 11 year old and showing no sign of slowing down!

They say generally, girls grow taller than their mothers, and boys grow taller than their fathers, not always but as a general rule.

My daughter is taller than me. I'm taller than my mother. But both my grandmothers were tall, and about the same height as me.

I think it's really about genes, two short people will seldom have a tall child. Two tall people will seldom have a short child. Build, height in wider Parameters, usually prevails.

brizzlemint · 27/04/2019 09:36

We're the exception then, I outgrew both my parents and my DCs have outgrown both parents. My father was shorter than his parents though.

Dgm- 5.7"
Dgf- 6.1"
Df- 6.5"

Dgm- 5.8"
Dgf- 5.5" (but grew up in an orphanage so likely nutritionally deficient growing up)
Dm- 5.6"

Me- 5.10"
Db- 6.5"

Kids still very young but ds predicted to be 6.2" while girls predicted to be about 5.5" or 5.6"

They say nutrition over the centuries has something to do with height. I read about it awhile ago.

So we were all much shorter over the centuries, but a history of poor nutrition meant subsequent generations didn't grow as tall as others. Good nutrition and this resulted in growth over the centuries being higher for others, resulting in taller generations. It takes a long time to change it.

Hence why we have such wide variances in height now.

Thr only thing that makes me doubt this, is the royal family. Who quite frankly are normally very short. But this could also be something to do with sitting on their arses a lot ie they do little physical activity over the generations. I don't really know. But the queen is tiny, as was Victoria, and I assume others. As such, I'd guess it's about more than simple nutrition.

Mid parental height is sometimes used by the medical profession:
ebmcalc.com/HeightPotential.htm
Has limitations and not always accurate but often a useful guide when assessing for potential growth problems in adolescents

Maybe I'm odd, but I really do find this all quiet neat!
I hadn't thought about how much nutrition plays a role too

What puzzles me re genetics and nutrition is families where one sibling is tall and the other is short, if I take Dbrother's family as an example:

DBro: 6 foot
DSil: 5 foot 9
DNiece1: 5 foot 4
Dniece2: 5 foot 10
DNephew1: 6 foot 2

Dsil's parents are tall, both taller than DNiece1 but shorter than DNiece2 and DNephew1

Megan2018 · 27/04/2019 10:14

My Mum is 5ft 3, I’m a smidge taller at 5ft 4
My Dad is 5ft 8 and my brother is 5ft 10.

None of my Grandparents are tall but DH is from a taller family and is 6ft 3 so be interesting to see if our baby has any height!

BWatchWatcher · 27/04/2019 13:19

You’re supposed to take the average of the parents’ heights and then add 2 inches for boys and subtract 2 inches for girls. This is a very rough guide!
Other genetic factors obviously come into play.

Squirrel26 · 27/04/2019 14:06

I'm the shortest in the whole extended family, including about 12 cousins. (5ft5 - so not actually short!) Both my parents are shorter than their siblings. My brother is a whole foot taller than me though.
