Did you grow taller than your parents?

NorthEndGal · 26/04/2019 14:27

My grandmother's on both sides were very short (just over 5 foot) and both grandfather's were at the 6 foot mark.
My parents were 5'6" and 5"9
I ended up being 5' 10 DH is 5' 10
Our DD is 6 ' 1" and a bit, DS is 6'
It makes me wonder , of they have kids one day, will they be taller still?

Also, I am just curious if it is the same with most people s families (each generation gets a bit taller)?

My DM is 5'3, her DM was about 5'1. I tower over both of them at 5'10, the same height as my DF & DB. DH is 5'11 & our boys are 6'0, 6'2 & 6'3.

User10fuckingmillion · 26/04/2019 21:01

I’m only 5’2-DM is 5’4 and DF is 5’10. DB is 6’ and he’s just turned 14! Hmm

WatchingTheWheels85 · 26/04/2019 21:11

I'm 5ft 2 my mother is 5ft. My nan was 4ft 10 and her mother was 4ft 6!

Spinnaret · 26/04/2019 21:15

I didn't end up taller than my mum, at 5'2", but the number on here who have ended up taller gives me hope for my tiddly son's!

Spinnaret · 26/04/2019 21:16

Rogue apostrophe. Thanks autocorrect.

NaBiAgOl · 26/04/2019 21:18

No. My mum was 5'5 and I'm 5'1
But my daughter is taller than I am and my son has inherited height from somewhere. Luckily really that it was that way round, as men always suffer more from being short. I mean ''suffer'' is too strong a word. It effects their confidence more.

Floralnomad · 26/04/2019 21:19

My dad and mum were 6’ and 5’5’ , I’m 5’8” . Dh is 6’3” and our dc ( adult ) are dd 5’5” and ds 6’3” , so dd obviously got my mums short gene .

Popcorntwice · 26/04/2019 21:22

I'm 5ft 3, my mum is the same as me and my dad is around 5ft 9. Both of them had short parents.

My DH is 6ft 3 and from a tall family. DD1 (20) is 5ft 5, DD2 (14) is 5ft 8 and DS is only 10 and is tiny!

Freshprincess · 26/04/2019 21:22

Mum yes, Dad no.
Both my DCs are taller than me and their dad.

Feilin · 26/04/2019 21:40

Dm 5 ft 7 d dad 6ft 2 me 6ft 3.5 db 6 ft 5 dsis 5ft 10

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 26/04/2019 21:54

I'm slightly shorter than both my parents, though that could easily be attributed to health

tanpestryfirescreen · 26/04/2019 21:56

My DD is much shorter than me or my mother but DH isn't really tall (taller than me) and the women in his family are tiny.

Linnet · 26/04/2019 22:13

Im not sure how tall my mum was, maybe 5ft 5 my dad I would guess is about 5ft 8. I’m 5ft 2 . One of my dd’s is 1 inch taller than me the other is about half an inch smaller than me, she may still grow though so might end up a bit taller than me. Their dad is 5ft 6.

arseabouttit · 26/04/2019 23:05

@beenhereages1 thank you! Ha! School trousers are a nightmare! As are all trousers! We are getting into 38" leg now - 36's are flapping above the ankle. At least fashion trousers can be worn half mast not around the actual waist. Never thought I would be saying that! Might have to make a different thread on this! Wink

origamiunicorn · 26/04/2019 23:08

My Mum is 5'6" Dad is 6'3"
I am 5'10", sister is 5'4" brother is 6' so it's a real mixed bag.

AlunWynsKnee · 26/04/2019 23:29

I am exactly the same height as my mum and we're both 2 inches shorter than my dad. My db is taller than all of us as is my DH.
Dd is 12. She's about an inch shorter then me but she's still growing so I expect she'll be taller than me.
DS will be taller than me but no idea by how much.

lottiegarbanzo · 26/04/2019 23:34

Look up 'regression to the mean' OP.

People do not carry on getter taller and taller (or more and more intelligent, or stupid) with each generation.

lottiegarbanzo · 26/04/2019 23:37

Also, height is genetically multivariate - dependent on lots of genes working together. Each person inherits a large number of them and comes out somewhere round the average of those. They can inherit all the tall ones from each parent, all the short ones, or, more usually, some mid-range mixture.

BillyAndTheSillies · 26/04/2019 23:48

I've always been the shortest in my house and I'm 5'9".
My mum is 5'11", my dad 6'1" and my brother is 6'5".

DH and I are the same height and his parents are shorter in comparison to mine (MIL probably 5'5" and FIL maybe 5'7") so I'm intrigued to know how tall DS might be!

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 27/04/2019 00:04

I'm the shortest on both sides of my family (grandparents/aunts/uncles/afult cousins all included) by several inches. Sister is taller than my mother. Dh is taller than mil (she's quite short) but shorter than fil (quite tall). Bil is the same height as fil.

Dd8 is only a foot shorter than me. Ds6 is catching up. I suspect dd will be at least matching dh for height, with ds outgrowing us

dontcallmelen · 27/04/2019 00:12

Nope, my mum was 5ft 3” my dad 5ft 7” I’m 4ft 10.5
My dd is 5ft my Ds is 5ft 9.5, my Dh is 5ft 11 his Dm 5ft 5” DF 6ft 3”

llangennith · 27/04/2019 00:22

My mum was much taller than her peers, born 1928 and 5ft 9ins. I assumed I'd be as tall but my sister and I are both 5ft 6ins. Her DDs are same height as her, my DDs are 5ft 8ins and FD is 6ft 1in. All the grandchildren are tall.

YouBumder · 27/04/2019 00:26

Wow OP your daughter is so tall! I’d love to be really tall.

I’m 5 ft 7 and my H is 5 ft 9. My mum is 5 ft 6 and my dad is 6 ft. H’s dad is shorter than him but his mum was around the height of my mum.

My dad’s parents were short and my mum’s mum was a bit shorter than my mum but her dad was over 6 ft.

My son is 13 and still a few inches shorter than me. My other son is only 10 and quite small so it’s difficult to imagine how he’ll end up

Katastrophy · 27/04/2019 00:39

Nope - I am shorter than both parents by at least 2 inches

SpaceCadet4000 · 27/04/2019 00:58

My Mum and I are the exact same height. I'm much taller than both of my Grandmas were in their prime though.
