So I had an accident at work last week.. it involved a scalpel and a fainting medical student. Long story.

Anyway. Occupational health gave me a hiv test and not a lot else as it was a clean scalpel. They were frankly fucking useless. I went to see my GP today as it was my day off and I was worried. When I went to see him it was a fairly clean wound and he took a swab and said to keep it open to the air. As I've just finished a course of Clarithromycin for an infected face (got all the sexy stuff me don't I?!)

Now I've had a bit of pain from it over the weekend but oh my god it's mutated through the day. I'm
In work tomorrow and off on Thursday but I don't know what to do with it!

Do I cover it up with a dressing and hope no one notices the discharge or get another appointment tomorrow ?

The photos are;
This morning at 7am
This afternoon at 3 (after the swab)
This evening at 10pm

It's so fucking painful!

That looks so sore, hope it starts healing soon.

Chartreuser · 30/04/2019 06:06

Owww they really doesn't look good, glad you're going in.

I caught pseudomonas (sp?) from childbirth and the smell of my pp bleeding was something I will never, ever forget. I really hope your ATM doesn't smell that bad.

Are you in the hospital you work at? Always wondered if it makes things better or worse? I work for a uni with many hospitals that I am sometimes an outpatient in and find if I've got my work pass on thru do explain things differently.

Fingers crossed they can crack this soon for you, In being in a good few days iv antibiotics after what happened last time

FaithInfinity · 30/04/2019 08:10

Hope you’ve been seen. That definitely looks nasty and needs further attention.

roundligament · 30/04/2019 08:20

You need IV
Taxycin or Gentomycin

NewYoiker · 30/04/2019 08:43

@Chartreuser no I'm not in the hospital I work for but that's because it's a specialist hospital. But I have told them
I need to get it sorted so I can go back to work in theatres so they do know I'm a hcp.

It does smell, I want to chop my arm off tbh. I'm meant to have a meeting with work tomorrow about it but it looks like I'll be missing that.

Tazycin or Gentomycin IV will sort this
I had a persistent case of it on a nephrostomy and it nearly killed me
I was pregnant as well which made it harder

You poor thing

Haworthia · 30/04/2019 12:19

I'd been opening swabs packets and using gloves to take samples etc, I had gloves on at the time having just closed a bin bag stood up med student fainted I got hurt. Ripped my gloves off and immediately applied pressure to stop the bleeding. But I didn't have chance to wash my hands after taking the gloves off so there could be a small amount of transfer on my hands

Oh you poor thing, what a freak accident.

Is it still an incident that needs to be reported though? Hope it was if so.

FaithInfinity · 01/05/2019 07:37

How is it/are you this morning?

roundligament · 04/05/2019 16:57

That’s definitely improving Smile

BlackeyedGruesome · 07/05/2019 12:07

Red is better than green and yellow scabby.

Hope it will finally get better now. Did you have your meeting with your hospital?
