Have you put suncream on your kids this weekend?

I did yesterday but DS has just gone out now so I thought I’d let him get some vitamin D. I’ve had skin cancer (basal cell) so I tend to go ott with it the suncream. It’s ok at this time of day to be without though isn’t it? He’s got jogging bottoms, t shirt and cap on so only his forearms our really.

Yes but I let dd 18 mo run around with none on for 15 mins or so to soak up a bit of vitamin D. She wont tolerate a hat in any weather and there's no shade in our garden so I won't risk it. I slather the factor 50 on me instantly but am still a bit pink.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 21/04/2019 18:47

Do Spaniards, Greeks, Swedes, Germans put suncream on as soon as it hits 20°? Only have experience of Greeks but they tend to stay out of the sun and don't sunbathe , they sit in the shade during hottest part of the day and don't sit out in direct sun burning like a lobster.

Dh burned on Friday, not just a bit either, quite badly. Ds and I used suncream and didn't sit directly in the sun like dh Hmm

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 21/04/2019 18:51

I wear sunscreen everyday regardless since getting sunburnt on my face in the middle.of winter 2 years ago and because I use retinol.

I give DS a quick spray if he stays Still long enough, however he is mixed race and has never burnt so I'll admit I can be a bit lax.

Can speak for any of these but my relatives in Australia wear sunscreen year round, always have a hat on hand in the summer and actually take advice to stay out of the sun when it's at its highest.

I think sitting baking in the sun regardless of how hot it can be is a particularly British pursuit.

sanityisamyth · 21/04/2019 18:59

Yes. It was 22 degrees at the beach today with no cloud cover or breeze.

ineedaholidaynow · 21/04/2019 19:03

We all wore suncream on Friday and Saturday as were out and about in the sun a lot of the day, but not today as haven't been out much in the sun. My DF had skin cancer on his head as didn't wear a sunhat enough. I have just had basal cell carcinoma removed from my leg, so probably worry more than most.

NicksWife08 · 21/04/2019 19:06

No. Low UV, DC's are part Indian so very dark but also they haven't been in the sun very much. We've been in the garden and they have a sun tent which they are in and out of.

Surfskatefamily · 21/04/2019 19:06

Yes...if u want to reduce the amount of sunscreen aplications get zinc based. Put it on mid morning and will see you through the day.

I use it for surfing and its bloody good. No nasty chemicals too

Chancewouldbeafinethlng · 21/04/2019 19:08

Yep, been very hot here. I don’t bother on the morning but once it gets to 11 or so I put it on.

Armi · 21/04/2019 19:14

Yes. We are all very fair skinned so use loads of it as soon as the sun comes out. We were out in the sun all day today and slathered loads on.

User24689 · 21/04/2019 19:16

@mslucyhoneychurch People who live in warm climates tend to stay out of the sun, whereas in the UK everyone is out in it due to the relative novelty.

I've spent 8 years living in Australia and yes definitely wore sunscreen in the sun at 20 degrees which was often a winter temperature. I wore it on my face year round and the rest of me during warmest part of day and my vit d levels were tested during pregnancy and we're fine.

frenchonion · 21/04/2019 19:21

Plasterered. All of us. We have been at the beach in the scorching sun though. Two of us are pale and have to go careful with the sun but sensible approach to sun exposure and we are good. One of us is brown as a nut already and never burns, but I still pin him down for a sun screening during the hottest parts of the day. We don't know where on earth he came from 😂 One (red head) is the colour of milk and I practically spray paint him with factor 50. It is so freaking stressful looking after his skin! And even if he gets the tiniest bit hot he goes beetroot red so you can't tell if he is just warm or burnt to a a crisp. Even his ears, toes, neck, nostrils and eyebrows have to be thickly coated (only half joking!). Ginger maintenance is hard work!

whatawolly · 21/04/2019 19:30

Nope, and to be honest I probably won't either.

I feel sorry for my neighbour, she has 2 ginger kids and she's a complete nervous wreck making sure they are constantly covered head to to in cream. Fuck that Grin

PatchworkElmer · 21/04/2019 19:32

frenchonion another parent of a red head here. It’s genuinely stressful, isn’t it! Feel like I spend my life chasing him with a bottle of factor 50!

megletthesecond · 21/04/2019 19:36

No. They're olive skinned and been in and out all day.
They do need it if we're at the beach though.

HexagonalBattenburg · 21/04/2019 19:42

Yesterday I did as they were out in the heat of the day playing in a paddling pool for a good couple of hours. Today I just had them with t-shirts and hats on and they were inside most of the hottest part of the day. Tend to let them out for a bit in the morning before seeing what they're up to instead of playing in or outside and suncreaming them up to make sure they're getting vitamin D as well.

MiniMum97 · 21/04/2019 19:44

The sun has been very hot. Of course you need sunscreen. The time of year is irrelevant.

Drogonssmile · 21/04/2019 19:54

Yea. Today and yesterday. More so on my 2.5yo DS as he is very fair, blonde, blue eyed etc and burns easily. Just a quick slather on DS1 age 5 as he is dark like me. Both were dressed with shorts T-shirts and hats on.

Bobbiepin · 21/04/2019 20:00

Not judging but just to remind people that people of any race can get skin cancer. Having more melanin offers some protection but not all, so slap on some factor 15 at least.

Aragog · 21/04/2019 20:10

We didn't out suncream on today. I do often forget at home. Though Dd is an older teen so I don't have to feel responsible for her!

We've just had 10 days holiday in 45+ heat and a UV of Very High/Extreme. I came home white after lots of suncream use. I've spent this afternoon in my garden at 22 degrees, forgot suncream and my arms are pink - typical.

Aragog · 21/04/2019 20:11

UV levels here today said medium.

adaline · 21/04/2019 20:25

I would have done had I been outdoors today. I work in Ambleside and it's been in the mid-twenties since Thursday - I would say about 50% of people I served today were sunburnt!

It might be cloudy but that doesn't mean you won't burn. So many people seem to have a very laidback attitude to the sun despite the fact that skin cancer is the fastest growing cancer in the UK.

RandomWok · 21/04/2019 20:26

Yup one DC is very pale. I'm mixed race and caught the sun yesterday because I didn't wear any.

adaline · 21/04/2019 20:27

I feel sorry for my neighbour, she has 2 ginger kids and she's a complete nervous wreck making sure they are constantly covered head to to in cream. Fuck that

Yeah, how dare she care about her kids getting skin cancer!

YesQueen · 21/04/2019 20:28

@MeanMrMustardSeed you can't "prep" your skin for the summer Confused
I never tan. And tanning is a sign of sun damage anyway
