Have you put suncream on your kids this weekend?

I did yesterday but DS has just gone out now so I thought I’d let him get some vitamin D. I’ve had skin cancer (basal cell) so I tend to go ott with it the suncream. It’s ok at this time of day to be without though isn’t it? He’s got jogging bottoms, t shirt and cap on so only his forearms our really.

I burned walking in 15 degrees on Wednesday.

Soubriquet · 21/04/2019 17:57

Yes I did

We was out yesterday afternoon so cream was needed.

MsLucyHoneychurch · 21/04/2019 17:58

Do Spaniards, Greeks, Swedes, Germans put suncream on as soon as it hits 20°?

Serious question - not being snarky.

Yes. I've now had two basal carcinomas on my face both of which have left scars. Pale skin, don't tan. Didn't go abroad until I was 18 and have never been a sun bather. Look after yourselves folks.

JulianDickGeorgeAndTimmy · 21/04/2019 18:03

Yes. My husband didn’t it enough on his neck yesterday and it was red last night

BillywigSting · 21/04/2019 18:06

Yes both me and ds have been slathered in it for the past few days. Me because I am on medication that has a side effect of increased sensitivity to the sun (not half, have a tan through factor 50 already) and ds because he is five.

It's boiling hot here. Hotter than parts of Egypt atm.

It's the same bloody sun and can do the exact same damage.

TheStakeIsNotThePower · 21/04/2019 18:07

Put some on one out of 3 children. 2 don't burn easily and I only encourage them to cream if high uv, beach, out for long period etc so they hardly use it day to day. The other burns really easily. He went for a bike ride early morning with no cream but we were out at an event for the afternoon and I put cream on him.

WobblyLondoner · 21/04/2019 18:07

@MsLucyHoneychurch According to this Norway, Netherlands and Germany have higher rates of melanoma than us, so perhaps they should be worrying about this more.

Seriously, people just do not worry about this enough in my view. Until I know all the stuff about Vit D etc but skin cancer is bloody horrible.

TerribleTwosPhase · 21/04/2019 18:10

Yes, dd is only 18 months and I wouldn't risk not putting it on her, she's mostly been under shade anyway but thought it was best to be on the safe side

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/04/2019 18:10

Yes , a basal cell carcinoma and a melanoma means I put sunscreen on between April and October as advised by dermatologist.

haba · 21/04/2019 18:10

No... because both have asd, and have been cowering in darkened rooms stressing about what that bright thing suddenly in the sky is! Wink

MeanMrMustardSeed · 21/04/2019 18:12

No, despite them spending a lot of time outside. I think these early sunny warm days are really good at prepping their skin for the summer.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 21/04/2019 18:17

Ds2 did because he’s a fair skinned redhead who can burn at temperatures I still need a cardi in! Ds1 has a naturally darker skin tone, so he didn’t. But they’re at ages now (16&12) where they know their own bodies.

blackcat86 · 21/04/2019 18:19

DD is covered in spf 50 plus a sun hat but then she is only 8 months and it's the first real UV shes been exposed to. I've put the factor 50 on as well as I'm quite fair and prone to burning.

myhamsteratefreddiestarr · 21/04/2019 18:26

Yes, because it’s been 22 here and you can feel the sun burning your skin.

I got sunburnt a fortnight ago in Cornwall as I wasn’t expecting it to be that hot.

polkadotpixie · 21/04/2019 18:27

Yes. My DS is only 7 months old and is pale, blue eyed and strawberry blonde verging on ginger so I don't want him to fry!

He's been slathered in factor 50 repeatedly throughout the day. It's really quite hot here in the East Mids

FenellaMaxwell · 21/04/2019 18:29

Yes. We are ginger and we live on the South Coast.

Ohhellothereladyface · 21/04/2019 18:30

Yes I have.

parrotonmyshoulder · 21/04/2019 18:35

Yes, we’re all very pale and burn easily. 6 yo DS burnt in March in PE! Not just a bit pink - hurting skin at night.
DSIL was with us on the beach yesterday and is really red today. The rest of us were very suncreamed up.

Greenandcabbagelooking · 21/04/2019 18:36

Yes, on me and my 2 year old nephew who I was looking after. We spent most of the day in the garden or the park. I'm very pale and blonde so would have been putting suncream on anyway, he is less pale, but I don't really want to hand him back sunburnt.

InglouriousBasterd · 21/04/2019 18:37

No. Low UV and fairly olive skinned DD who could do with some sun on her. Same for me - I’m pale and on super strong vitamin D supplements so wanted some sun on me. I only do in boiling weather in proper summer months tbh.

User987654433 · 21/04/2019 18:40

Yes.

Pengweng · 21/04/2019 18:41

Yesterday yes as UV was high but not today as they were only out a bit this morning and UV was medium.

CMOTDibbler · 21/04/2019 18:43

Yes, absolutely. I have worn F50 all weekend and got burnt through a top yesterday which was thinner than I thought. DS is like DH and doesn't burn easily but still gets made to wear it, though dh uses f30.

In the OP, I prob wouldn't have made them wear sunscreen if wearing a hat

NotStayingIn · 21/04/2019 18:44

Yes, because you only need about 20 min or so of sunshine to get enough Vit D, and I think only a few times a week. So if he is out for say more then 30 min it might be better to put sunscreen on.
