Hello, I’m hoping for a bit of advice please.

My tenancy is due to end on the 2nd of May with my private landlord. We have the keys to our new house so have been gradually moving everything over. We had an inspection of the property last week and the landlord was happy. I mentioned we needed to re-paint the walls as my daughter had drawn on the ones in her room (happy to re-paint and pay for paint etc) he was happy with this.
However we received a text today stating he wants his keys back this Tuesday (23rd) as he has new tenants moving in Friday (26th)

Is he allowed to do this? We were going to use our final 2 weeks to make sure the house was as we moved in but now we can’t. We have deep cleaned the house it was only the painting left to do. We have also paid up until the 2nd of May too.

If he hasn't protected deposit take him to court and you'll get it back x 3.
That is an illegal eviction btw you need to get to the council ASAP and take him down.
(I'm a landlord and what he's done it appealing and against any rules)

It's UP TO 3x - at the discretion of the judge. I wouldn't give them false hopes.

This is either unbelievable or illegal, you have every right under tenancy laws, you have to give or be given a set period of notice.

@Alicewond my DH is a solicitor who specialises in this area and you'd be surprised at the amount of people who do this! One landlord evicted his tenant and then put it on air bnb so she rented it back through there.. but it is appalling! The amount of times he gets called to court to help tenants who have been evicted is awful.

NewYoiker · 24/04/2019 02:35

Just to clarify when I say evicted I mean he changed the locks and told her she couldn't have her stuff back. Then she turned up via air bnb and got it back but it shouldn't be like that

also he's had a landlord who removed the front door of a property he owned as he owned it.

OP my brother is a solicitor too, and breaching a contract or giving undue notice is illegal. You can refuse to move. If your DH doesn’t know all the law I can put you in touch with people who do
