I'm the most intelligent person I know

Not me.

But I've had 2 men say this to me in rl. At different times. Also I was listening to something today where a man was claiming to have the highest iq of anyone in the world.

I don't think I've ever had a woman say to me in rl that they are the most intelligent person they know.

Is this a male thing?

When the men have said this to me in real life I thought "Confused"

That's hilarious. How did you respond?

And no, I can't imagine a woman saying this to anyone, even if they thought it.

ticketsonsalenow · 19/04/2019 22:50

The best retort you can give to that one is:

"You need to get out more"

Grin
nocoolnamesleft · 19/04/2019 22:51

I believe the appropriate reply is either "you need to get out more", or the slightly immodest "not any more!"

nocoolnamesleft · 19/04/2019 22:51

Oops, cross post.

tobee · 19/04/2019 22:52

It was many years ago. I think I said "oh right." Coz I didn't know how to react. I only thought of it because of this man I heard about today. It wasn't Trump btw.

I think a woman might talk about someone else's intelligence; not their own.

When the men said it to me I wanted to say "why would you say that? Surely you know it makes you sound like a nob?" Grin

If they're not trying to be ironic / humourous then it would be very difficult not to ask what rock they'd been hiding under for the last 30/ 40 or however many years.

It's a bit like saying "trust me" I think. Anyone who says "trust me" is telling you that they cannot be trusted, anyone who says unironically that they have an unusually high IQ or are the most intelligent person they know is telling you that they are a bit thick, at least in terms of emotional intelligence and common sense. Any one who feels the need to tell people that they themselves are beautiful/ handsome/ really really good looking isn't... I'm very intuitive, is another - people who say it about themselves never are.

Some things are never true if people say them about themselves.

tobee · 19/04/2019 22:58

They were rather intelligent people. But it did somewhat scream "over compensating"!

Just wondering if it is just men. Possibly not though.

Have you been talking to my brother? He used to tell me he was in the top 1% of intelligent people in the UK and 10% top of the world. He never completed any of the university courses he started; he never held down a job until he moved to the US to get married and had to (I assume) to be able to live there. Sometimes he would condescendingly tell me that I was relatively intelligent - but relative to what he wouldn't say. But he thought the world centred around him and owed him a living, so probably believed every word he was saying.

tobee · 19/04/2019 23:04

So anyone come across any women who've said this in rl?

OP posts:
xsquared · 19/04/2019 23:05

Not sure whether it is just a male thing, but having been one of the two girls in our further maths A level class, some the lads did see us as inferior, because of our sex.

One of them described me as being "normal" rather than "intelligent" like him. He was a knob.

ticketsonsalenow · 19/04/2019 23:05

#nocoolnamesleft Great minds think alike Smile

Tunt · 19/04/2019 23:06

“Mazel tov”

plum100 · 19/04/2019 23:07

Never heard a woman say it but I know a bloke who does - I’m embarrassed for him

ticketsonsalenow · 19/04/2019 23:07

So anyone come across any women who've said this in rl?

Yes I have. Me.

TheSmallAssassin · 19/04/2019 23:09

If they're really intelligent, they'll know all about the Dunning–Kruger effect.

Sarcelle · 19/04/2019 23:11

I have said those exact words but it was to make my DH laugh.

KennDodd · 19/04/2019 23:18

I know a woman who said this. She was really lovely as well, we were close friends in our youth. She was very clever as well, we were very young, mixed in not the most educated circles, she might well have been right. And despite saying the above, was not at all self obsessed or conceited.

tobee · 19/04/2019 23:30

Ah well, there you go. Women do say this.

OP posts:
Jux · 19/04/2019 23:38

Ah, so you've met my dh then!

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 19/04/2019 23:41

I have a female acquaintance who regularly tells people "I'm very intelligent you know"
She's of average intelligence and above average ego.

NoCanoe · 19/04/2019 23:52

Not a male thing.

I have a friend who drops into conversation her high IQ.

Peakypolly · 19/04/2019 23:55

Slightly different, but my hairdresser tells me that she has never met anyone as wise as herself.
I must say she is pretty spot on about a huge variety of subjects, so I don’t think she is being arrogant.

NoCanoe · 19/04/2019 23:55

Ive kept quiet.
But mine is higher than hers.
I dont believe those tests anyway, and Im sure I'm right! Wink

NoCanoe · 19/04/2019 23:58

Peakypolly , where you based ,I could do with a wise hairdresser.

MitziTheTabbyIsMyOverlord · 20/04/2019 00:54

I'd be sooooo tempted to say "prove it" !

(but I'd probably just say "ok")
