I’ve just dug up someone’s wedding ring in the garden!

I don’t think it’s particularly old, I’ve lived here for 10 years.

Previous owner died. Not sure what to do with it! It’s huge on me and not my style at all!

Charity shop? It doesn’t have any hallmarks so I’m not sure it’s particularly worth much

That's really pretty. But it's not my style either.
Do you have any way of contacting the family of the previous owner? It could have been lost years ago and they would be really happy to get it back.

Foundring · 17/04/2019 10:10

No way of contacting them at all. It was an elderly farmer who lived here who was a bit of a recluse by all accounts

If your sure it’s the previous owners then re- bury it ? Of if you know the family ask them what they want to do?
My mum lost her wedding ring whilst gardening and the next owners found it and returned it .

Finfintytint · 17/04/2019 10:12

Dig a bit deeper - might be a body there tooSmile

Chasingsquirrels · 17/04/2019 10:15

Take it into a jewellers, get it valued, decide whether to sell it, bank the money.

youaremyrain · 17/04/2019 10:16

Could be eg Indian gold and not hall marked because of that (or could be out of a cracker)

HopeOverAnythingElse · 17/04/2019 10:16

Why re-bury it? Confused

Stroller15 · 17/04/2019 10:18

@Finfintytint love the casual smiley after your comment Grin

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 17/04/2019 10:19

If you can't contact the former owners I'd sell it and regard it as a windfall - but if you're uncomfortable keeping the money, donate it to a charity relevant to the presumed owner - farmers benevolent fund or somesuch

Finfintytint · 17/04/2019 10:19

He may have been a reclusive farmer for good reason.

TipseyTorvey · 17/04/2019 10:22

Grin at Finfintys comment.

NoMoreBump · 17/04/2019 10:23

Get it valued just in case then decide.

glitterbiscuits · 17/04/2019 10:25

If they are real diamonds it could be worth a bit.
Do they sparkle? I quite like it.

I wonder if the previous owner employed someone to help in the garden?
It may be worth asking on a local Facebook page without showing what you found.

GreenTulips · 17/04/2019 10:27

Yes his wife’s buried with the ring!

Foundring · 17/04/2019 10:27

If there is a body there I’ll leave it. Had a bumper crop last year, must be good fertiliser

OurChristmasMiracle · 17/04/2019 10:29

I’m wondering if it was buried under a rose bush with the farmers wife’s ashes- assuming he was ever married.

Caraboss · 17/04/2019 10:29

Take it to the police station. Then it's all above board.

Finfintytint · 17/04/2019 10:31

Police station won’t accept it. If you are keen to find the owner then just make a few reasonable enquiries with neighbours.

FiremanKing · 17/04/2019 10:32

It’s massive!

Are you sure it’s a ring and not a decoration off of a perfume bottle or a napkin ring, seeing as it has no hallmarks and is so big?

LarryGreysonsDoor · 17/04/2019 10:33

Could you post it on a local Facebook page etc? The children of the owners might recognise and appreciate it.

I understand the rebury it comment. It could be that family buried the ring in the deceased owners much loved garden.

Personally I think you should do what you can to find family of the owners before selling it etc.

runningintotime · 17/04/2019 10:37

Maybe it was buried deliberately post-divorce as a symbol of a marriage that has long been dead and buried? Or maybe I'm overthinking this Grin

QuimReaper · 17/04/2019 10:39

Blimey, that woman had colossal hands! I wonder if it wasn't a wedding ring, surely nobody's ring finger is that big?

DantesInferno · 17/04/2019 10:41

Diamonds aren't worth diddly on the second hand market if you sell to a cash for gold, all the value will be in the gold

LillithsFamiliar · 17/04/2019 10:43

If you have a local newspaper, contact them with the story. It's a perfect story for them and is the best way to try to find out who it belongs to.
