I’ve just dug up someone’s wedding ring in the garden!

I don’t think it’s particularly old, I’ve lived here for 10 years.

Previous owner died. Not sure what to do with it! It’s huge on me and not my style at all!

Charity shop? It doesn’t have any hallmarks so I’m not sure it’s particularly worth much

I wouldn't want to meet the woman that belonged to in a dark alley with hands that size!

Looks to be some sort of costume type jewellery? Have you found anything else? My uncle (a farmer) used to bury metal knick-knacks in his field and then send me and my cousin out for hours with a metal detector and a spade

Figure8 · 17/04/2019 10:44

Value it? Frame it?

Notgoodatchoosingnames · 17/04/2019 10:46

If you can't find out who's it was and it isn't your style then maybe get it made in to something that is your style? like PP said you won't get much for resale

damnthatoneistakenagain · 17/04/2019 10:46

Are you sure that isn't a baby's bangle?

It looks a bit big for a ring!

LOLing at some of these comments on here. Grin

Perhaps it is a bangle and the OP is a giantess?!

(Sorry, OP, just my little joke Grin Also, you have pretty hands and nails)

olderthanyouthink · 17/04/2019 10:51

Seeing as that's on your thumb and it's huge it's got to be for very large man hands to fit on a finger... men's rings aren't normally that pretty. Do you reckon the farmer liked to dress up as a woman? Confused

IncrediblySadToo · 17/04/2019 10:56

I’d talk to the neighbours and see if they know anything more about previous occupants.

I wouldn’t sell it or anything until I’d had a bloody good try to get it back to its original owner or family of.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 17/04/2019 10:56

Are you sure it's a ring? I'm wondering if it's the sort of thing used to decorate the cap of a bottle of perfume or whatever ...

DaisyDreaming · 17/04/2019 10:59

I would do local fb groups and local paper, with no picture and see if you can reunite the owner. If you don’t post the picture and ask them to describe it.

HoraceCope · 17/04/2019 11:02

looks very big, i would take to jewellers

Closetlibrarian · 17/04/2019 11:11

sell it and give the money to charity

Tinkoschminko · 17/04/2019 11:18

Shamelessly following to find out more about cross-dressing farmer.

SecretWitch · 17/04/2019 11:22

That is ginormous. It seems in very good shape for being buried! Please tell us how you get along, Op. This is nearly exciting as the safe in the cellar thread....

MadSweeney · 17/04/2019 11:24

I found a mans gold signet ring in a big plant pot in our garden a few years ago. Helpfully though it was monogrammed with the initials of the man next door who'd died some years prior.

I called his son who told me he'd lost the ring in his own garden in the 80's. We could only surmise the large magpie population in the garden had picked it up and dropped it in flight into ours. He was thrilled to get it though.

Foundring · 17/04/2019 11:24

I’m heading to town now!

Will let you know what the jewellers day

It is massive yes!

You should post it on FB and have a Cinderella moment trying it on people for the best fit.
That should be fun.

UCOinanOCG · 17/04/2019 11:30

Gosh that is a massive ring? Are there any tales locally about a reclusive farmer who took a giant as his wife??

katseyes7 · 17/04/2019 11:33

DantesInferno is correct. l wanted to sell a gold ring with a 0.75 diamond solitaire, and l was told that "you get almost nothing for second hand diamonds" - it's the gold they want.

Foundring · 17/04/2019 11:37

He was a bit of a bastard from what I’ve heard. Was dead in front of the Rayburn for 4 days before anyone found him

I'm the same as finty (sp?) re the check if anyone's buried there - I watched the buried under the patio Brookside episodes and then read about Fred West's murders - at bedtime too - yes I'm weird!

Judging from the Antiques Roadshow recently I totally agree that the usual diamond type jewellery, wedding bands etc usually tend to be lower value - if they're made into other jewels, are from abroad or even as on Antiques Roadshow mixed in with other 'less valuable' jewels but are more unique pieces these tend to sell well.

So sad to say your piece wouldn't sell for much.

You could see if via a newspaper article (local rag may want an unusual filler article) if any relatives of the dead man who lived in your house may want the ring for sentimental reasons - if they can prove they were related and you want to part with the ring!

CabbageHippy · 17/04/2019 11:38

Toe ring?

Persimmonn · 17/04/2019 11:40

Marking my place for giant ring outcome Grin

Clawdy · 17/04/2019 11:40

It may not be a wedding ring, of course. Unusual for even a cheapish gold ring to have no hallmark.

DoctorDread · 17/04/2019 11:42

Well it's enormous. So now of course we all need to find out it's mysteries!!!
