Game Of Thrones- Desperate to watch, but not sure I can handle the sexual violence. Shall I give it a go?

Hi,

I genuinely love the sound of it. The music even gets me excited and I haven't watched a single episode!

The problem is, I just can't handle seeing sexual violence on the TV and I hear this features heavily.

I don't suppose it's a simple as skipping those scenes, as it sounds like I'd be skipping half the series!

My dp has only seen the first couple of series, but agrees that I'd find it a struggle, but also thinks I'd really enjoy it, minus all that.

Has anyone managed to get past this or is it just one to avoid if you struggle with this kind of thing?

TIA

I didn't think it was that bad. Or, I've seen worse. Or maybe it just doesn't bother me.

People talk about the incest stuff...

Yet you can legally marry a cousin in this country...

The incestuous characters in GoT are a pair continually-screwing of brother-sister twins, who at one point get it on while pushing a small child out a tower window, and at another point over the corpse of their psychotic dead son.

It's hardly in the same league as (perfectly) legally marrying your cousin. Hmm

Really annoys me this!

[whoops posted too early sorry!]

The use of sexual violence and constant tits just completely put me off watching this show.
Clearly written by a man teenaged boy!!

Your life really won't be significantly lacking if you just decide you don't want to watch OP 🤷🏻‍♀️

pinkboa · 16/04/2019 23:25

Incest is incest is incest.... doesnt matter if its brother and sister or second cousins twice removed...

Its incest.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/04/2019 23:28

Of course it matters. We all have a common ancestor. Not the same as shagging your twin brother!

Sashkin · 17/04/2019 06:48

Incest is incest is incest.... doesnt matter if its brother and sister or second cousins twice removed.

Second cousins twice removed isn’t incest... that’s your great uncle or aunt’s grandchild’s grandchild.

MorrisZapp · 17/04/2019 08:03

I watched a few YouTube clips to see what all the fuss was about. Does anyone on GoT ever have sex face to face?

Or is it constant doggy style? It's the crudest, most base portrayal of sex imaginable.

MorrisZapp · 17/04/2019 08:04

As for incest being the same if it's your second cousin, I'll assume someone's taking the piss there.

chocolatelog · 17/04/2019 09:52

People do realise that this is a tv show right? It's not incest because it's just characters! We're not actually seeing brother and sister at it.

Mrsjayy · 17/04/2019 10:09

Well viewers are seeing twins at it because they are watching it we all know they are actors but the storyline is repugnent to some so that is why they don't watch

MargotLovedTom1 · 17/04/2019 12:20

Ah well MorrisZapp , they obviously hadn't had missionaries come along to tell them how to do it.....Wink.

MargotLovedTom1 · 17/04/2019 12:21

're shagging, not incest!

MorrisZapp · 17/04/2019 13:11

Lol, didn't think of that! But seriously, in a cold country, surely human nature is to cuddle and be intimate, not mount each other like animals. What do I know.

tinytemper66 · 17/04/2019 13:21

That is the reason why I stopped watching it after the middle of the second series!

YesimstillwatchingNetflix · 17/04/2019 13:53

I'd give it a miss if I were you. I don't think you will enjoy it.

MadeleineMaxwell · 17/04/2019 15:22

I wouldn't, OP. I quite like it at times (I mean, yay dragons), but they kill babies, pregnant women, children and veritable heaps of other people. It's basically tits ahoy throughout and it's extremely brutal in places in the name of 'realism'. It is not for people of sensitivity. I've been quite angry and repulsed at it at times, but I'll watch it to the end now since I've seen the rest thanks to DH!

managedmis · 17/04/2019 16:27

It's quite graphic tbh

JuneFromBethesda · 17/04/2019 17:30

I’m reading this with interest. My husband and I watched the first two episodes ages ago and I found those hard to watch so we stopped. We’ve been talking about giving it another ago - all this hype! - but this thread has persuaded me that I’m probably better off without it.

APurpleSquirrel · 17/04/2019 17:35

It is very graphic at points both in terms of violence & sexual violence so if that's not something you wish to experience I'd say it probably isn't for you - it is an amazing show & books in my opinion though.
You also need to look at it in the view of the era in which it is set, which is essentially a medieval era where unfortunately that sort of behaviour was commonplace. It's kind of like complaining that Mad Men is sexist - yes it is, it reflects the time it is set in.
As others have said many of the women go on to be the ones in control, showing up the weakness of the many men. Whether this can balance out what has happened previously is up to you.
The sexual violence & sex in general tones down as seasons go on - in fact in the newest episode a sex scene is merely implied lol! Which is incredibly reserved for GoT!

MargotLovedTom1 · 17/04/2019 23:38

Agree with squirell.
I thought I'd hate it because of all the reasons listed in pp. When I watched though I bloody loved it. Make your own mind up,OP, watch it for yourself.

Lessstressedhemum · 17/04/2019 23:57

The books are far more graphic and violent than the show. A lot of the most gory chapters have been really toned down, particularly with Ramsay and Arya. In the books, Ramsey flays Theon piece by tiny little piece and does ever more horrific things to those around him. His show story is quite reserved by comparison.
It is a very violent story but it is set in a very violent, basically feudal, world.

pinkboa · 18/04/2019 02:41

Re incest I am not taking the piss.

Legal definition aside

Having sex with any familial relation however distant is still pretty grim 😐.

7salmonswimming · 18/04/2019 03:21

I stopped watching because of all the gratuitous, needless sexual violence.

I’m not craving entertainment so badly as to encourage more TV like this by adding to viewing figures.

Girlofgold · 18/04/2019 16:10

I agree the first couple of seasons are a hard watch for that reason. People seemed to think I was mad when I mentioned it though 😒.
