Game Of Thrones- Desperate to watch, but not sure I can handle the sexual violence. Shall I give it a go?

Hi,

I genuinely love the sound of it. The music even gets me excited and I haven't watched a single episode!

The problem is, I just can't handle seeing sexual violence on the TV and I hear this features heavily.

I don't suppose it's a simple as skipping those scenes, as it sounds like I'd be skipping half the series!

My dp has only seen the first couple of series, but agrees that I'd find it a struggle, but also thinks I'd really enjoy it, minus all that.

Has anyone managed to get past this or is it just one to avoid if you struggle with this kind of thing?

TIA

Thanks for the link, Wild Flower.

Some of these descriptions do sound grim, but I'm not surprised.

As a few pp have said, I'm not sure I want to be desensitised.

I stopped watching it on the tv with DH after a few episodes because I was getting so fucked off with it. For all the reasons mentioned above. But I was enjoying the rest of the story and production. I ended up watching it on my tablet so that I could fast forward through a lot of Ramsay and Joffrey. They do tone it down after the first couple of series. But I do feel a bit of a hypocrite enjoying it so much.

I also really want to watch it, but have always been put off by reports of the extreme violence - sexual or otherwise. Thanks to the posters who commented with snippets above. I don't know about you, OP, but it's confirmed my decision NOT to watch. It just sounds upsetting frankly. I don't mind a bit of sex and violence in films and TV (love Trueblood for example!) but GOT really does sound gratuitous.

Cakemonger · 16/04/2019 14:30

I stopped watching it for this very reason.

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 16/04/2019 15:17

Trueblood = soft porn with vampires.

Deadringer · 16/04/2019 15:40

I hate any depiction of sexual violence too and thus far have resisted GOT, have been thinking of giving it a go as all my family love it, but after reading the post by mismade I will definitely give it a miss.

Deadringer · 16/04/2019 15:41

And yes trueblood had so much sex in it it was ludicrous. I enjoyed the books, the early ones anyway because unlike the tv series they are quite funny.

Preggosaurus9 · 16/04/2019 15:43

Don't bother, it's overhyped shite. Glorifying violence not just against women but men too are regularly tortured or killed in nasty ways. I gave up very quickly. Don't want to be densitised. It would be miles better if the violence were hinted at rather than shoved in the viewer's face. Stay classy and all that.

KittenMittens1 · 16/04/2019 15:45

I would say try the first episode see how you manage.

Yes the series have a lot of sex, nudity and violence, but the acting is amazing, and the majority of people karma and revenge gets them back if you stick to watching it.

I would say the last 2 / 3 series have calmed down a lot in terms of sexual violence so its whether you can go through a few episodes here and there.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/04/2019 15:50

No, I thought it was awful and didn't want to be OK with it. I don't understand the appeal at all.

It was anger-inducingly awful for me. The bit with Joffrey and the two prostitutes has stayed with me and the thought of young men watching that for entertainment makes me really concerned.

And the constant female nakedness... to the point where even the male cast members were campaigning to get their cocks out it was so sexist.

KittenMittens1 · 16/04/2019 15:51

Also those who gave up watching very early on, dont really understand the full storey line,

the story line is nothing to do with sexual violence the story overall is the dead vs living. and who will be left standing after the war of all wars. the sexual violence dies off really after the first few series and features in one or 2 episodes through them,

Mrsjayy · 16/04/2019 15:52

And you know what else bugs me the actors are all so smug when they are being interviewed every single one of them is smuggy smug smug gets right on my wick!

KittenMittens1 · 16/04/2019 15:53

@Mrsjayy I don't see how they are any more smug then every other actor tbh.

www.dailydot.com/parsec/game-of-thrones-asoiaf-rape-statistics/

Kittens 50 rapes, you heard me, 50. Someone worked it out. If the story line has nothing to do with sexual violence, that's a shit load of it.

RHTawneyonabus · 16/04/2019 15:59

I read the book but I just don’t like the level of cruelty and sexual violence in the name of entertainment personally soo haven’t watched it beyond episode one. I don’t really get why this level of gore has become acceptable in modern tv tbh.

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 16/04/2019 16:01

If you do start watching it don't get too attached to any of the characters...odds are they'll die.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/04/2019 16:04

Oh and season 6 is the first without a rape. That's five seasons which do have one.

And most of it doesn't pass the Bechdel test. So much for the 'feminist' message.

TulipFever · 16/04/2019 16:05

Yeah, so sit through eight seasons of gratuitous sexual violence towards women in the knowledge that it's (1) irrelevant, (2) calms down towards the end, and (3) was just for upping the ratings on the way along, and (4) maybe a few of the women, the ones who weren't invented by the screenwriters just to be debauched and dispatched in glorious technicolour, might end up revenging themselves. Hmm

SaskiaRembrandt · 16/04/2019 16:06

There's always the books if you don't fancy the series. You can flip pages easily, and apparently they're not as graphic as the tv series. (I can't confirm this personally!)

I can personally confirm the books are more graphic, and some of the more unpleasant scenes (in the books) are toned down for the series.

SaskiaRembrandt · 16/04/2019 16:09

Ramsay is mostly a distant character in the novels -- we hear bad things about him but don't see them happening,

I'm not going to go into detail because spoilers, but although Ramsay's story line differs a bit in the books, it is still incredibly violent and sadistic.

MargotLovedTom1 · 16/04/2019 16:11

"50 rapes, you heard me, 50. Someone worked it out."
And according to the link, over four times as many as that in the books, which contradicts what mismade posted earlier.

pinkboa · 16/04/2019 16:14

People talk about the incest stuff...

Yet you can legally marry a cousin in this country...

I know it's fantasy but I don't think times gone by were any different...

Perhaps reading the books first would be better. Then you might be able to gauge if you can stand to watch the series.

LazyFace · 16/04/2019 16:15

I ffw all the nude scenes. There was one about 10 mins long, completely unnecessary to the story.
You won't miss much.

pansydansy · 16/04/2019 16:18

There's a lot of sex in the first few series. It dies down quite a lot though. In the beginning I was so bored with all the sex I'd just grab my phone and flick through fb until it was over lol. I love game of thrones though and it's definitely worth while.

P.s don't watch power 🙈🙊
