It's breaking on bbc news, from the pictures it's a major blaze!

Tragic. Hope it can be stopped before too much damage is done. It looks bad.

But if York Minster can survive 3 huge fires. Hopefully Notre Dame can too.

Dd going to Paris in a July and was so excited to go to Notre Dame, can't imagine it will be open to tourism by then.

What caused the fire do we know? An exploding boiler or something?

Wouldn't they have a sprinkler system?

Just seen it on Breaking News.
Some pictures look like the fire is all over and some just from one area where some scaffolding is. Hopefully it is contained and not spreading.

Bloody hell, that's huge!

They said it may be linked to renovation, which so often seems to be the case. (From what I remember from previous dreadful fires, wood can char slowly for ages, eg from workmen's sparks, and then burst into flame when no one's around to spot it.)

Seems to be related to the work going on there.

Let's hope they can save it. The cathedral apparently needs urgent work done as it is crumbling. I do hope the fire doesn't weaken the structure too much.

How awful, I hate old buildings going. I hope it won't be to weak and need destroying.

It’s out of control now, right up the spire, which will probably collapse. Looks like it started on the roof.

Awful. And the fact it’s Holy Week makes it even worse if that’s possible

What does it have?

Guess it's similar to most old cathedral type buildings. Nice to bimble round, go up the towers. Into the catacombs for an underground tour.

So sad, the flames look huge on the bbc clip. It was an amazing building
