Was reading today about the reconstruction of the Frauenkirche in Dresden after it was bombed in WW2. It made me hopeful that Notre Dame can also be restored to its former glory.

It will, its not rocket science at all after all the "tech" has been around for hundreds of years;) Course there aren't that many stone masons around like their used to be but they do exist. As to wood working maybe the same but what we do have these days are power tools the like of what the earlier builders could have hardely imagined. It would have taken a day for a roof beam to be sawn back then now miniutes on the power stuff thats around now.

Add on tower cranes and powered hoists these are very productive tools indeed. All they need to do now is to just get on with the job which well with a gallic shrug, may be a while yet.

In a newer design lets hope that they do put some fire barriers along the roof and if remade of wood fire retardent on that also. Lead is a fine roofing material I expect they'll be able to recycle a lot of that.

It almost strikes me as negligent that no one did anything about how a nave roof fire could connect across to the main towers. Furthermore I'd like to know how if the fire had allowed to burn a bit longer just how they'd be endangered?. Yes there may well be wood inside them but their very substantial stone built towers and they should have, or ought to have had like a lot of english cathedrals do that gear already up there hoses included ready to be used in a matter of miniutes.

Lets hope they add in heat seeking cctv which works very well with a good fire alarm system this might never happen again, its all quite feasible nowadays.

I’d think it was wrong to say the Catholic Church was responsible for the spread of HIV/AIDS throughout sub Saharan Africa but for an organisation that claims to value life, it took a very lax stance on promoting the prevention of death and suffering through the use of condoms and proper education.
Responsibility for the spread must remain with the men who knowingly used infected prostitutes, who raped, who had numerous partners despite being infected.

The Vatican has said that in circumstances where the main reason is to preserve life, then condoms may be used. Sadly that was a message from the current pope and given far too late.

True Cherry. I'm certainly no defender of the Catholic Church (or any religion), but is it is supposed to be responsible for the spread of AIDS and HIV because of its teachings that contraception is a sin?

Because if it is then its teachings also keeps sex within a marriage. Which means theoretically one sexual partner (or at least very few over a reasonable period of time) so nothing would be 'spread'.

So unless it was preached only about condoms, or to have loads of unprotected sex, then the responsibility does indeed lie upon the men who did such things as rape virgins to cure themselves.

(Though I admit that in the cases where it told women that using condoms for sex with their infected husband was a sin is harsh. Responsibility and consequence of men's actions being put upon women is rife in nearly all religions. But I've a feeling that even if women were told a condom was ok in these situations their husband wouldn't use one nor abstain from sex.)
