Was reading today about the reconstruction of the Frauenkirche in Dresden after it was bombed in WW2. It made me hopeful that Notre Dame can also be restored to its former glory.
It will, its not rocket science at all after all the "tech" has been around for hundreds of years;) Course there aren't that many stone masons around like their used to be but they do exist. As to wood working maybe the same but what we do have these days are power tools the like of what the earlier builders could have hardely imagined. It would have taken a day for a roof beam to be sawn back then now miniutes on the power stuff thats around now.
Add on tower cranes and powered hoists these are very productive tools indeed. All they need to do now is to just get on with the job which well with a gallic shrug, may be a while yet.
In a newer design lets hope that they do put some fire barriers along the roof and if remade of wood fire retardent on that also. Lead is a fine roofing material I expect they'll be able to recycle a lot of that.
It almost strikes me as negligent that no one did anything about how a nave roof fire could connect across to the main towers. Furthermore I'd like to know how if the fire had allowed to burn a bit longer just how they'd be endangered?. Yes there may well be wood inside them but their very substantial stone built towers and they should have, or ought to have had like a lot of english cathedrals do that gear already up there hoses included ready to be used in a matter of miniutes.
Lets hope they add in heat seeking cctv which works very well with a good fire alarm system this might never happen again, its all quite feasible nowadays.
