Disillusioned with life in the UK...where shall I go?

Having somewhat of an existential crisis, and spending a lot of time dreaming about pastures new.

Anyone live anywhere they think is getting it right? Good standard of living, decent values, nice scenery, a government being run by human beings?

Indulge me, please - help me plan my escape, or at least help me construct a pleasant fantasy; before I lose faith in humanity altogether.

Sweden? Norway?

Pinkarsedfly · 07/04/2019 13:34

Yes, I’ve often wondered if they’re as good as people say...would love some inside info

Norway very expensive. I hear Finland is nice if you can handle the winters but the folk are a but...shy.
Iceland?
Falklands?
Scilly isles

SeeYouLaterUserData · 07/04/2019 13:36

The Netherlands. Good luck OP.

Pinkarsedfly · 07/04/2019 13:37

Ooh...my ears pricked up at the thought of the Scilly isles...

I was googling Orkney at 2am today.

My sister lived in the Netherlands for years. I miss visiting her there. I loved it.

Czech Republic.

Musetti · 07/04/2019 13:39

Switzerland. Expensive but the wages cover it.

Musetti · 07/04/2019 13:40

What do you do for a living OP?

(If you’re a teacher, go to Switzerland!)

Pinkarsedfly · 07/04/2019 13:40

Sadly, I’d need a decent grasp of a second language to work in Switzerland. I’m a teacher.

Oh, x-post. Is there a shortage?

Remember Brexit whilst looking!

fitzbilly · 07/04/2019 13:43

Following with interest.

I hate the weather in this country, it's April and will freezing!! I need somewhere warm where there are jobs and a good education system! Sadly only Australia fits and I doubt we'd get visas

GottenGottenGotten · 07/04/2019 13:44

If you want to leave the UK, don't go to Orkney (unless Scottish independence happens). If that's not such a big deal, Shetland has better scenery imo.

I would consider Portugal. It's one of the cheaper countries in Europe to live in, but close enough for people to easily visit/easily travel home. I don't know about the government though. Bulgaria is also cheap, but I don't fancy it so much...

Vitalogy · 07/04/2019 13:44

Go to somewhere in the developing world. Then you'll realise what side your bread is buttered.

Pinkarsedfly · 07/04/2019 13:44

Brexit is a large contributor to my malaise, Musetti. Hence my perusal of the Orkneys on Rightmove.

Everything’s just so crap. I want to live in a cave.

Vitalogy I know I’m lucky to have running water and a house. But I’d quite like to be happy too.

Pinkarsedfly Not a shortage but British teachers are liked. It’s just the work life balance is amazing compared to teachers in the U.K.

Sazquatch · 07/04/2019 13:46

But living in Orkney would still be living in the UK?

onelostsoulswimminginafishbowl · 07/04/2019 13:49

New Zealand! South Island is beautiful but it does still get very cold in the winter.

Vitalogy · 07/04/2019 13:51

Nothing to do with the outside and everything to do with your inside.
Turn the news off.

Sarahlou63 · 07/04/2019 13:52

Portugal. Lots of international schools so the language isn't a barrier. Warm (normally - cold and wet today!) low cost of living and fabulous quality of life.

Pinkarsedfly · 07/04/2019 13:52

It would, but in my fantasy I wouldn’t be confronted by the ugly bits all the time.

I’d get up, walk my dogs along the beach, weed my vegetable patch, make soup, paint a picture...all without seeing one single hen party, patch of puke, pissed person shouting at a homeless man, picture of Jacob Rees Mogg, etc etc etc.

My home city has turned to shit. My business has folded. My vocation has become a travesty. I’m having a Sunday afternoon wallow in fantasyland before the Monday grind.

Palma Mallorca is meant to be a brilliant place to live. That's my dream place for when DS finishes school.

I get what Vitality is saying though. Wherever you go, you take yourself with you.

Pinkarsedfly · 07/04/2019 13:53

That used to work, Vitalogy. It doesn’t any more. The shit has moved closer to home.
